I stayed 7 days at the Y City South for the sole purpose of attending the early stages of the Sydney International Piano Competition of Australia. The hotel is a very convenient 6-8 minute walk from Seymour Centre (Sydney University) where the piano recitals are held. The room I got was very spacious for one person, including double bed, en-suite facilities, fridge, ironing board, coffee/tea making facilities and television. The room overlooked busy railway tracks, but noise disturbance was not a big problem. A basic breakfast is served every morning – toast, cereals, juice, milk, coffee/tea and Vegemite! Wi-fi is available at a small cost. Very important: hotel provides an airport shuttle service at $12, cheaper and more convenient than taking the railway. The hotel’s clientele was mostly pilgrims (for World Youth Day) and fellow music-enthusiasts, generally a largely friendly bunch of people. Y City South is a 4-minute walk from Redfern Station, but that entails a walk through the ghetto-like Eveleigh Street, where homeless people may be found sleeping al fresco in the adjacent park. Taking the longer route would be a safer option at night. One could also walk to Central Station (8-10 min), and the delights of Chinatown and Haymarket (10-12 min) just further afoot. Nearby eating places: an acceptable Chinese takeout (within a service station, 2 min) and a Thai restaurant on Cleveland Street (4-6 min). All in all, an excellent budget choice of accomodation. "

Good hotel, the position is not exactly central but it is near to the train station. unfortunately, not many restaurants in the area, need some walking to good. Very kindly staff, and room clean also if not exactly big. But perfect for bugdget travellers-

The staff were very friendly, the rooms are very clean & look like they've just been done up. Breakfast was good & they also have internet & a gym. Only thing you might need to take is ear plugs - one morning I was woken up at 6am by people next door with the TV on.

The very best of the best is the roof kitchen and sitting place. At night you can see a wondrous view of the city with the bats flying over the Botanical Gdns, shining in the city's lights and reflecting it back. MAGIC!

Comfy beds, nicely refurbished, nice modern fittings. Wasn't too happy about reception calling my room after I'd gotten ready for bed to come down and pay the balance though, (reception forgot to get me to pay on the way in), I was already in my PJ's and the guy insisted I come down to pay anyway! Grrrrrr. Other than that, it was fine.

+The reception staff were extremely helpful and the gym was a bonus. -Waiting for the one toaster at breakfast. I believe you are aware that one toaster is insufficient for the number of guests at breakfast time. The toaster itself is a danger having to put things near the elements to retrieve the toast. Surely the purchase of two good toasters is not that difficult to arrange. We never heard the vacuum cleaner being used once during our one week stay. Rooms are small. Would recommend, but with comments as above to potential guests.

Great budget accomodation- rooms small but clean with everything you would need. Good part of town for getting to SCG or into the city. Very good security- if you are looking for a safe, comfortable, affordable choice I would recommend the Y Hotel.
