Ymca Vanderbilt - Shared Bathroom
224 EAST 47 TH STREET - 10017 New York
Located in Manhattan's East Side, the Vanderbilt YMCA offers surprisingly low rates for its guest accommodations. The Guest Rooms include 370 single and twin rooms, and feature TV, air conditioning, housekeeping services, use of safe-deposit boxes and 24-hour security. Our multilingual staff can point you in the direction of the many points of interest within walking distance. The Vanderbilt Y is a short walk to Grand Central Station, which provides the 4, 5, 6, 7 and S subway lines, and Metro-North Railroad for points outside of Manhattan.Once known as the """"Railroad Y,"""" the Vanderbilt YMCA was established in November 1875 in the basement of the New York Rail Station to provide housing for the nation's railroad men. Each year, thousands of railroad workers traveled through New York City, requiring overnight accommodations. Soon, the five centers that made up the """"Railroad Y"""" did not offer enough space, so in 1866, Cornelius Vanderbilt, a generous entrepreneur, gave the Railroad Branch a home of its own at 361 Madison Avenue. In 1932, with two more moves under its belt, the """"Railroad Y"""" made its final transport to 224 East 47 Street, where it still stands today. On 47th Street, the """"Railroad Y"""" quickly became a neighborhood YMCA. Membership was offered to community residents and the building was christened the Vanderbilt YMCA to honor the family instrumental in the development of this facility. Descendants of Cornelius Vanderbilt were honored in May 1996 at the Vanderbilt YMCA and a bronze plaque was erected on the site to thank the Vanderbilt family. Today, the Vanderbilt YMCA continues to be community-minded by serving our neighbors in many ways. Through respect, responsibility, caring and honesty, we offer programs that enrich the community. Our extensive health and wellness facility and youth programs answer to the needs of adults, seniors, families, teens, and children. It is with vim and vigor that the Vanderbilt YMCA looks toward the future with an eye on the past and feet planted firmly in the present. We welcome you to our YMCA. ""**Please be advised this is a hotel for the budget minded traveler.**

Excellent location. Had to walk right round the block for restrooms, at 3a.m! Certainly suitable for backpackers or singles crushing for a night or two. You get what you pay for.

The rooms are too cold or too warm, washrooms very old and just one each floor, not enough.

The hotel staff was very helpful and friendly. The room was very simple,as expected. The bathroom and shower down the hall was clean. I seldom ran into other people in either of these two rooms. The facilities in the hotel were exceptional, a large exercise room and pool were available to visitors. The location was near transportation, and the bus pickup for the airport was on time. All in all , my stay was satifactory, and for the price, exceptional.

Twin rooms are VERY small. OK for a couple nights, but would be uncomfortable for a lengthy stay. Television in room, linen included and bath towels.

Loud noise in pipes off and on. Beds uncomfortable. And check in staff kinda apathetic.

The price of the hotel has raised in the past three years. Yet, the services, as it seems, got worse. First off, there is a good chance of you having a sleepless night there. Right across the street there is a night loading service; the noise from loading metal boxes on trucks is unbearable, as the loading gets done every other hour fro at least 25 minutes. Second, you will have to bare the security craziness. Due to increased security service no guests can enter the room, even if it is a relative helping to care in a bag. The security service reminds a prison regime. Finally, there is a questionable level of cleanness. The bed sheets do not seem to be fresh, or washed for you. I did not dare to take my sweat pants and t-shirt off when I went to bad. Other than that, the hotel improved much on providing the guests with sport amenities. The pool is as nice, and a cool exercise room is a great addition to the hotel. One bathroom per floor for the communal sharing (to which you have to walk, and use a code to open) is also a pain.

Very pleasent place to stay. The only problem was the banging sound of the radiator during the night. However, I would recommend it, and definately stay there again sometime in the future.
