The Moderne
243 W 55th St - 10019 New York
The Moderne Hotel is a delightful and cozy boutique hotel in Midtown Manhattan. With a total of 34 rooms, the Moderne Hotel is the smallest of the five Amsterdam Hospitality hotels. Around the corner from Broadway in Midtown Manhattan, this brick and brownstone hotel is two blocks from the Theater District, four from Central Park and Rockefeller Center. One of the highlights of the Moderne Hotel is its guest room design. Andy Warhols portrait of Marilyn Monroe is the focal point of the cleverly designed rooms. Silvery quilted headboards, velvet curtains, and large mirrors enhance the theatrical feel.

Just got home from my trip and had a terrible experience at this hotel.

I thought this place sounded interesting with it's "modern" decor and passed up the opportunity to book into someplace reliable, like the New Yorker, for a similar rate. The decor is cheap and tacky, a primary red wall across from the bed (so soothing); two of the exact same prints on the walls, not different ones; an essentially non-functioning A/C (funny it's listed as an amenity, good luck); and never a full set of towels from day to day (one day a bath towel put down as a mat, most days no washcloths at all). This is the WORST! If you want to save money by staying in a traveler's style hotel, try the St. Marks.

Awful place! Just come back from a week's stay here and I can safely say I would NEVER stay here again. We had the same shower problems that other people have stated, in the middle of showering it would turn it's self off!! The heating would only be on high regardless of adjustments made and eventually we just unplugged it. We couldn't open the window as it was sealed shut and faced out onto a brick wall. The decor was shabby and not at all cool and funky as it looked on the website. The toilet in our bathroom would constantly run and asked for it to be fixed and was told it would be.......it never was! I have made a complaint to the Amsterdam Hospitality group and eagerly await their response

My husband and I stayed here during the COLD snap of Jan/04, and had a great time. For such a handy locatation, @$100/night was perfect for us: we're young and just wanted somewhere quiet and safe to sleep. We didn't need much else, so maybe that's why we enjoyed it so much.

We just returned from a stay at the Moderne the weekend before Christmas and had no complaints. The room and bathroom were clean and though not spacious, were perfect for us since we spent little time in the room. Our room was very quiet and although the elevator was broken upon our arrival, it was fixed the next day. The staff were friendly and helpful and the car service that they arranged (to the airport) was on time and much more enjoyable than the taxi ride from the airport.

After reading the other reviews, I was surprised that so many of them were negative. I had a decent stay at the hotel. Most things were average. The location is unbeatable. It is right in the heart of everything. It is close to the corner of 55th and Broadway. The size of the room was small, but I expect that most NYC hotels have similar sized rooms.

i loved this place... it's small, quiet, looks new and is very clean modern comfy and simple... i usually stay at the new yorker (because it's nearly the only hotel in the $100 range in midtown) but have always been grossed out by how beat up and dirty it is and the area around 34th is gross too... but up on 55th there are many more gourmet food stores and nice restaurants and i got my Moderne room for $108 on travelocity...and it's less than a $5 cabride from grand central... i will definitely be staying here again...

Clean and relatively reasonable for NYC This is the third hotel owned by this group that I have stayed at, and while I would stay there again, I liked it the least of them. The room was reasonably sized and was very clean- my primary criterion. The person at the front desk was very nice and helpful both at check in, and in helping me figure out the best and fastest way to get to my dinner engagement. The TV was not so great-- half the channels were fuzzy and the power button was missing. And the heat in the room was WAY too high-- so much so that it was nearly impossible to cool the room off even once I turned on the AC. In the end, nothing tragic, and a good deal.

Good location.. friendly staff but rooms very small. Clean and well decorated. TV works well. The hotel has free coffee/tea all day but no coffee shop or other facilities. However, plenty of restaurants nearby.
