Signature Suites - West Village New York
55 Morton St - 10014 New York
The Morton Street Suites are located in the West Village near plenty of great restaurants, shops, theaters and playhouses. The building is a pre-war brownstone, art- deco style. Situated on a tree-lined, double-wide angled street, this property evokes classic images of the Big Apple. Arched doorways welcome the visitor to the building, which features tastefully appointed studio and one-bedroom apartments. Cribs, rollaway beds and parking are available for a fee, and pets are allowed. Units feature everything you'll need for a comfortable stay in the city. Every apartment has a separate windowed kitchenette with refrigerator, microwave oven and coffeemaker, as well as a private bathroom and fireplace. A cordless phone, answering machine, air conditioning, and laundry machines are provided. Other amenities include cable television, VCR, stereo and CD player. Kitchens come completely stocked and there are new sheets, towels and blankets in every room.

This property has history written all over it. It can be hard to tell by the hotel chain crowd because there is a lot of refurbishment left to do (and pre-stripping and painting "in the lines" doesn't seem to be that important for property of this era in NYC in general). Once we figured out how to operate a hot water radiator and the tub drain (with the 100 yr old ceramic finial with "waste" written on it in Times New Roman font) we really started to get comfy. The little tiny kitchen, though we didn't use it, would have been great for a longer stay - stocked with dishes and pots etc. The place is mini so don't plan for more than two people in the room - kind of like a European room in that respect but it had several key appliances like an alarm clock, stereo, tv/cable and a VCR. The bed was super cumfy and with the radiator working the bedding was plenty warm. The ancient elevator was exciting to use. With the famous Chumley's speakeasy just 2.5 blocks away - I really felt like I was walking in my Gramma's footsteps when she came to NYC to find her fortune in 1925. If you are looking for pristine surroundings and service at your fingertips this place is not for you. This place if for the adventurer who wants to see something different, dissolve rapidly into the vibe of the old Greenwich Village and not spend a fortune.

This hotel, the Morton St. Suites, was substandard at best. The stove did not work (would not light), the cable service for the T.V. was turned off (and when we requested help, we were always told to leave messages, which were never returned). Once, a day after a maintenance person was promised, a guy showed up to fix the T.V. He tried, genuinely, realized the cable was turned off and called the manager from our room. The manager hung up on him apparently, and he gave us a blank look. "He says he doesn't care." he told us. He told us to call someone else, gave us a name, and not to say that he told us. Never was fixed. There is no housekeeping service, no additional towels provided for the 4 nights we were there. Window air conditioner rattled so loudly we could not sleep with it on. With decent service and some maintenance, this could be a nice place. Great location.

55 Morton St. is a great spot in the West Village, and staying at the studio could have been a great experience. However, the kitchen and bathroom were not clean, and we had no TV/cable service all week. The sheets had holes in them and the mattress was uncomfortable. Management was impossible to get in touch with and the problems were never fixed. Not a pleasant experience, at all.
