Hotel Wales

1295 Madison Avenue - 10128 New York

102 years after its debut as the aristocratic Hotel Chastaigneray, Hotel Wales, on Madison Avenue and 92nd Street continues to offer a genteel refuge to discerning travelers. Hotel Wales is just a block from the former Carnegie-Vanderbilt and Sloan Mansions on Fifth Avenue. More than a half dozen major museums, including the Metropolitan, Guggenheim, Cooper Hewitt and Jewish Museum are in close proximity as are the galleries, haute couture designers and chic boutiques, restaurants and cafes on Madison Avenue. The 10-story hotel consists of 87 newly renovated guestrooms and suites. Many of the rooms command views of Central Park and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis reservoir, in addition to the serene atmosphere of the surrounding residential neighborhood. Each room focuses its attention on the detailed pieces of millwork that surround the windows, doorways, and original cased openings between the sitting rooms and bedrooms. Decorative fireplaces, featuring exquisite dark wood moldings and carefully refurbished turn-of-the-century beau-arts details are found in each of the suite accomodations. Public areas include the Pied Piper Room, an enchanting breakfast and reading room lined with charming illustrations from childrens books where European Continental breakfast is served daily, a 24-hour fitness studio, Sarabeth's Restaurant and Cafe' 92.

Not Impressed Very small hotel, small room (even a suite), big price tag

Comforting Stay This quaint upper east side hotel has the greatest staff. So helpful and friendly. Quite extraordinary for New York. The rooms are cute, if a little drafty on cold wintery nights, but a good value for New York rates.

Room too hot. Radiators can't be turned off. Can't sleep. Miserable. Parched. I think I'm beginning to hallucinate. Room service too expensive. Their e-mail address doesn't work- maybe too many complaints?

I loved the location to Central Park and the Guggenheim. The hotel is nice and quaint. My room was a suite with a sitting area that was really nice for working in the evening. I had a terrific stay and the stay was friendly. The only complaint I had was a slow elevator.

+It was very near Central Park, the Metro and Guggeenheim. It was also in a place where there were the least number of people.

Appalling misrepresentation of hotel by website. Hotel itself is tiny with non-existant facilties, little more than a 2* hotel. Drastically in need of renovation, rooms barely bigger than the bed, rude staff, no view whatsoever(except the smell of breakfast coming in thorugh the ancient and noisy aircon unit). long distance from anywhere (except the park), expensive rooms. Wifi charged extra ($25 a day I think). Beds are about 100 years old, terrible!

Charming Hotel in an ideal Location This charming hotel, located in the Upper East Side of New York, is just steps away from Central Park, great shops and quaint local restaurants. The residential neighbourhood is a relaxing reprieve from the hustle of the main Manhatten tourist spots. If it's within your budget, upgrade to a suite. Standard Queen rooms are small.
