Hotel Elysee
60 East 54th Street - 10022 New York
The Hotel Elysee offers its guests perhaps the most outstanding and desirable location in New York City. Situated on East 54th Street, it is within walking distance of many mid-town corporate headquarters, cultural landmarks such as the Museum of Modern Art, and some of the most outstanding restaurants and shops in New York. In addition to its amenities, one-of-a-kind guest rooms and beautiful appointments throughout, the Hotel Elysee is unlike any other hotel in midtown Manhattan offering the comforts and services of a luxury hotel in a setting that has the charm and privacy of a beautiful country inn. The Hotel Elysee features 86 meticulously renovated rooms, three junior suites, and eleven suites (many with terraces, kitchens or solariums) - all with marble bathrooms. A vital part of the New York scene since the 1930's, the Hotel Elysee has been home to privacy-seeking celebrities from the stage, screen and world of letters - including Tennessee Williams, Ava Gardner, Joe Dimaggio, Vladimir Horowitz, Marlon Brando, the Gish sisters, Dame Margot Fontayn, Harold Robbins, and many others. Hotel ELysee guests enjoy complimentary high-speed wireless internet access in all guestrooms and throughout the hotel. In the Club Room, guests begin their day with a complimentary deluxe Contiental breakfast buffet including fresh fruits, pastries, muffins, bagels, cereals and boiled eggs. The Club Room remains open all day serving freshly brewed espresso, cappuccino, latte, coffe and tea with cookies and fresh fruit - all complimentary. Monday-Friday evenings, Elysee guests may enjoy complimentary wine and hors d'oeurves from 5 - 8 PM. A complimentary computer station is available in the Library as well as complimentary Wi-Fi. Conceived in 1926 as a European-style hotel for the carriage trade and named after an upscale French restaurant of the 1920's, the Hotel Elysee still reflects the old-world charisma of that era. After its construction, the hotel quickly became a playground for the rich and eccentric; a perfect romping ground for movie stars, artists, writers and intellectuals. Still an oasis of grace and elegance in the vibrant heart of New York City, the Hotel Elysee has preserved the intimacy with which it started but, at the same time, has nurtured a sense of modernity as time has progressed.

The lobby is very nice but when we stayed, there were ongoing renovations so we had to use the service elevator which was cramped and off a narrow walkway by the stairs. We barely could squeeze through with carry-on luggages. Perhaps the renovations are done now, but the room was cramped too and traffic is very loud in rooms facing the street. Location is convenient though.

We loved the hotel. It is well located on East 54th Street, only a few blocks from Central Park, an easy walk to Broadway and Times Square, and a few steps to the stupendous Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). It's also an easy walk to Grand Central - make sure you stop into the restaurant at lunch time for a bowl of chowder. The Elysee breakfast (included in tarriff) was excellent, the rooms clean and fresh, and the bed one of the most comfortable I've found in a hotel. It all felt luxurious and fabulous! The concierge, serving and cleaning staff were very good but front desk could have been more knowledgable about their city, and if they had been a little more welcoming the hotel would have been perfect. I would happily recommend the Hotel Elysee to anyone looking for a good, mid-town location. Avoid the Italian restaurant opposite MoMA on 54th (Bice, I think - the Elysee recommends it in their materials but it's overpriced and, apart from the decor and interior design, very ordinary). Check out the New York Times for restaurant recommendations in the price range and area you want. They come up trumps every time.

A friend recommended this hotel to us in 1990. We found it to be an elegant oasis and have returned most every year since. The service is impeccable. What really makes an impression is the second floor Library. We enjoy a lovely continental breakfast each morning and then return each evening to have a cocktail and snack before heading out to dinner and the theatre. The location is excellent for walking to most shopping and sights. Ask for a room higher up and away from the street level traffic noise. Bathrooms and rooms can be smaller, however, have a traditional elegance.

+It was a very nice hotel and wonderful location. We will recommend it to all our friends. -We would have liked to have access to an ice machine. Every time we needed ice we had to call the front desk. A more friendly restaurant too. We were tourists and were dressed okay, but the restaurant staff treated us so poorly we left.

Hotel in a great location, an easy 15 min walk from Times Square in one direction and Central Park in the other. We did have an unfortunate mishap with the hotel forgetting to pick up the laundry we had requested. Due to this not happening on a Saturday t

We had a four night stay and the hotel is clean and the staff is nice. But if you stay on the street be prepared for multiple trash trucks throughout the night. Great Breakfast and free internet. Great location.
