My sister and I stayed there in November of 2000 and we are going back this November and it was a very good experience. The room was very comfortable and we felt very safe there. It has a small staff and we got to know them and felt very comfortable with them. I can't wait to get back the NYC!!!

We found the hotel clean, quiet and comfortable. It is old; however, the price was right, and the staff was super. Continental breakfast was good-- plenty of very large bagels and pastries.

I'll have to agree with others that the place is in serious need of an update.

Good hotel for the money If you want to have entry to all the major museums, get the NY Citypass - it provides cheap entry to museums, Empire State & a harbour cruise. Definitely worth the money!

We stayed at this hotel 17th-20th August 2007. The allocated room was large and had two kingsize beds for my husband, son and I. Bathroom had a good powerful shower and the towels were big and changed daily as well as daily bed make-up. On the downside I would have to say it definately needs a spruce up as the furniture, decor and general appearance is dull, shabby and old. We were on the 10th floor with a rear view onto office blocks but with a superb view of the gleaming chrysler building. Even though it definately needs updating it was clean. Who was that 'white haired elderly lady that sat in the leather chair everyday and opened the door for us' is she a live in resident or what ? First visit to NYC so nothing to compare it to, would try somewhere else for any further visits.

The hotel staff were great, and the towels and bed were ok. That's about it. We were on the 16th floor (1604) and the carpet was filthy and had black stains over it; the curtains were frayed; the two chairs were dirty and very old. The sink in the bathroom was cracked in about 6 places and there was mold on the shower walls. Also, when we first went into the bathroom the window was open - we shut it as it was cold outside. After the window being closed for about 1/2 hour we smelled an awful "sewer" smell - that's why the window was open!!!! We will never, ever go back to the hotel.

We arrived at the Helsmley Middletowne on the reserved date and were told that we were a no-show for the previous day and they had already charge our credit card. There were no available rooms for us and we were quite stuck. We had not made a mistake on the date. I checked our confirmation with their main reservation office and our date was correct. Later they offered us an up-grade for our next visit as an apology. They are removing the pending credit card charges but it certainly doesn't make up for the hastle of finding another room at twice the price, plus another cab ride and cab fare.
