Gershwin Hotel - New York

Gershwin Hotel - New York

7 East 27th Street - NY 10016 New York

Merely a few words cannot do justice to the individuality and artistic expression of this vivacious and stylish, 2-star designer hotel, The Gershwin. With rooms recreating the ambience of a New York appartment, including bay windows, bare brick walls, art deco radiators and colourful prints, the hotel is more about atmosphere and soul rather than straightforward accommodation. Located in the heart of Manhattan in the area known as Gramercy, the Gershwin has become "The Place To Stay" for up-and-coming artists, writers and creative spirits; also striving to re-create a Warholian effect throughout and even housing some of the artist´s work. A must for all guests is to take some time on each floor to enjoy the photographs and original works of popular art. Staying at the Gershwin is not just staying in another hotel, it´s like living in a contemporary art museum.

+Its location and its funky look was great -There was workman outside that started work at 6am! And the water was either burning hot or freezeing cold and the heating was suffercating.

Some of the art and the sex museum next door will probably put off your typical puritan American - but so much the better in my book. We stayed in the dorm rooms which were fine for the price, everything worked to a reasonable degree. The hotel has an excellent location, right next to Madison Square Park and 5th Ave. Welcome news is the fact that the club mentioned by many earlier reviewers is no longer open for business so nights were as quiet as the could be in New York. Recommended.

A few things to consider before booking a room at the Gershwin: if you stay on a high floor (11, for example), dont expect any hot water (or water pressure, for that matter). If you use the toilet, dont expect it to flush immediately (or within twenty minutes). Wear slippers unfinished wood floors can cause splinters. Enjoy sleeping in the center of the bed because the bed dips in so much that you will automatically roll towards the center. Prepare to stay awake because there is lots of construction, garbage collecting and door slamming at all hours of the night - horns honking, too. When we checked out early, no one asked why/if there was a problem. It must be routine for people to want to flee.

Very strange place, but not bad, just strange. The room i stayed in was very basic, four single beds, an en suite and TV. Service was adequate, but positioning, not so, every morning we had to walk several blocks, sometimes upto 9 or 10, or more to get to our destinations, then back again. And every day we had to walk past the sex museum next door. That was horrible!!

I wonder if we stayed at the same hotel as the other reviewers. We stated there last may and found the hotel convenient, interesting and very affordable. The art work is excellent (although, as a traditionalist, it is not entirely to my taste) and the funky atmosphere is a plus. We found the rooms clean, all services fine and the service, while a little avant garde, fine! We loved the place and will stay there next time we come to New York.

+full of character, felt like I was in NY and not just a boring, standard hotel room that could have been anywhere in the world. -more hot water please, shower mid day only gave me warm water.

Run away! This is an awful place. The six of us stayed in the dorms because we were not told there was a family package. It was 17 degrees and there was no heat at all! We slept in our coats. The service was very weak, and even after repeated begging for heat no one cared. The walls are covered in amateur sponge painting from a terrible fauvist nightmare. The art (I am an art teacher) around the place is not really appropriate for kids to see; neither is the Sex Museum downstairs.

It's a cool offbeat place but not your typical sterile, hermetically sealed hotel environment. The building is full of garish treasures, and the breakfasts are nice. If you want Holiday Inn, go book there. If you want something unique, go to the Gershwin.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone who would like to stay somewhere romantic or cushy! The rooms are old and don't appear to be very clean. The artwork of the older man overlooking our bed totally killed the romantic mood. The TV's were small and up too high to really view well. However, it is different from any other hotel I've ever stayed at.

+ Atmosphere - a bottle in bathroom, titled 'shampoo/body sorp'. door doesnt have chain, no fridge, cottony dust everywhere, cheap painting, holes on the floor
