City Club Hotel New York
55 West 44th Street - 10036 New York
The City Club is a sleek luxury hotel in Midtown Manhattan, tucked neatly between the Times Square theater district and Fifth Avenue shopping. Emerging from the building's storied limestone facade, which once housed an exclusive social club, guests may venture via Town Car or foot to Manhattan's prestigious restaurants and venues. Though discrete and personable in every regard, the City Club is not a boutique. Hotel owner and self described "eternal host" Jeff Klein avoids the tired cliché surrounding the b word. If there was ever a distinction to be made between the fleeting panache of boutique hotels and the timeless echelon of sophistication, the City Club makes it apparent. Indeed, the City Club defies the boutique stereotype with aspirations of immortality. Notable designer Jeffrey Bilhuber, whose clients include David Bowie and Michael Douglas, orchestrated the hotel's interior. The City Club's elegantly styled lobby was designed not to impress, but to entice on a diminutive scale. The typically intimidating and cold expanse of marble and stone found all too often in New York has been supplanted for an intimate tchotchkie laden sitting area with inviting sofas on a designer cork floor. World renowned chef Daniel Boulud's newest restaurant, DB Bistro Moderne, reinvents the traditional European bistro as a contemporary culinary jewel box. The DB offers room service and dining for all meals. The nine story City Club offers 65 guestrooms, each featuring exquisite designs. The City Club maintains an all original art collection throughout the property. Premium bedding with 320 thread count linens permits sleep in a city alleged to have none. Entertainment centers boast CD and DVD playback. Televisions with premium channels are masked by two way mirrors, which lose their reflective opacity upon the click of a remote. The bathrooms, complete with cascading showers, are decked in rich chocolate marble. Guestrooms offer complimentary high speed Internet access. The City Club appeals to sophisticated professionals and touring visitors who value style on par with luxury.

Right in the heart of downtown Manhattan. It is close to Times Square but not too close. Rooms are clean and modern and most importantly quiet. They give you free high-speed internet access. Only downside is that they only have food from the...

My daughter and I LOVED this hotel. We booked at the last minute and got a fabulous rate. The bath had a bidet and pedestal sink. Only a shower, but it was huge! The bed was comfy and bedclothes made from down. Everything was dark mahogany and very chic. They upgraded us to a Queen bed, thankfully. It's a tiny little lobby. No guards at the door, but no trouble either. Tiny little lobby but that was OK with us. Room at the desk barely for two employees. Only three blocks west of Grand Central so easily within walking distance to get out of town. A real find! Would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Will Definitely Be Back Again! Everything from the location to the hotel staff was wonderful. The adjoining restaurant, DB Bistro Moderne, was lovely and the food incredible. My only complaint would be the lack of proper lighting in the room and bath. It was too dim to read or even put on makeup. Traveler's tip on dining Don’t miss The Red Flame diner a few doors down for great food at very reasonable prices.

pros: rooms, value, styleThis is a great spot. The hotel is a good mix of service, style, location and value. While the scene is nothing like some of their neighbors, the quiet escape of the lobby and rooms were perfect. The rooms are clubby and...

Home away form home... City Club has the design attention and atmosphere of a true boutique hotel but I found it to be as comfortable as any room I’ve had in New York. The West 44th Street location is an admirable one and, although the City Club doesn’t have a gift and sundry shop like the major chains, it does have a 24 hour Duane Reade drugstore at the end of the block and the Red Flame Diner two doors down. Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks The food at DB, the Restaurant operated by Daniel Boulud at City Club, is exceptional, but quite pricey. A lot of money can be saved, and an authentic New York experience had, by frequenting the Red Flame for meals. The Red Flame and hot dog carts got me through four days in the City in fine shape.

A for effort! City Club Hotel is in a fabulous location - steps from 5th Avenue shopping, Rockefeller Plaza and Radio City Music Hall. It is quiet and friendly. Staff went out of their way for us during our stay. Fabric wallpaper shows a little age in the rooms, and mattresses aren’t the most comfortable, but the room was clean and otherwise perfect for our stay. Bathrooms are stocked with fabulous lotions and soaps and the water pressure in the marble shower will make you wake up and take notice. Black out shades keep out the morning sun. Staff recommended the adjacent DB Bistro Moderne for lunch - it was terrific! Would certainly stay here again and recommend this hotel.
