Gower hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment and badly understaffed, the management trying to run two hotels with barely enough staff for one. The few-numbering personnel are trying their best, but when the hotel is fully booked, you may end up queuing for half an hour to be seated in the breakfast room and another half an hour to be served. The English breakfast surely is filling, but a few fresh things woul d be welcome variation. The English skills of some people in the reception need improvement.

+ Staff were excellent and the room was serviced to our satisfaction. Nice area, quiet and easy to get to sleep. Facilities in the room were as advertised, perfect. Thankyou! - standard of decoration was poor

We were moved to the Athena Hotel which was across the street from the Gower hotel. The ratings above are for the Athena Hotel.

+ Basic clean and tidy for a value for money short stay. - Electricty plugs for kettle and razor did not work. There were not enough towels and there was no shampoo

The hotel charged double what it usually does for that room. It was extremely hot and there was no fan in the room but they gave us the fan from reception. The shower was terrible and the receptionist had to show us three times how to work it. The phone didn't work so we could only make calls from reception. The TV also didn't work and they couldn't get us a replacement. The staff were helpful but just couldn't deliver the goods. We were told the owners have two hotels and we were charged the price of the other hotel which is upmarket to this one but it was full. This place was a major ripoff!

We stayed here for a night over the Christmas holidays. The location is great as there are regular buses that stop along the same road which in 5 mins, get you to the Oxford Street area if you don't want to walk the 20mins. Paddington is a 2 minute walk away so excellent for getting about by underground too. We were impressed. The full English breakfast was good too and very friendly kitchen staff. London on a humane budget - Gower recommended. We were out about all day so we only needed somewhere to crash. If that's your style too, then go for this one.
