The College Hotel - The Stein Group Hotels

Roelof Hartstraat 1 - 1017 VE Amsterdam

The College Hotel is aptly named, and not simply because the hotel is set in a spectacular 19th century school building. This small, elegant, luxury hotel is actually run by students, albeit under the supervision of world-class professionals. It is situated in the residential Oud Zuid area (South/centre), within walking distance of the Museum Square with its Concert Building and the main museums such as the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum. Furthermore, attractions such as the Vondelpark, the exclusive shopping street PC Hooftstraat and the upcoming fashionable neigbourhood ,De Pijp, are only a stroll away. Right in front of the hotel is a tram stop, which can take guests to all directions in Amsterdam. Also within walking distance are the citya euro s nightlife hotspots, theatres and cinemas. The College Hotel is designed by paying homage to the past while filling the hotel with up-to-date facilities and modern design touches. The result is an eclectic, enticing mix of history and high-tech technology. From the moment guests enter the property, the hotel exudes a sense of relaxation and refinement that seems to reflect its historic scholastic past. From the high ceilings to the huge fireplaces to the sweeping staircases, the building leaves plenty of evidence of its fascinating history. The hotela euro s forty luxurious rooms have each been individually designed to maintain their own identity. Elegant fabrics and colours were chosen to accent warm nurturing tones, and all rooms are characterised by a harmonious blending of black with shades of brown and sandy colours. Bathrooms are finished with chic, subtle details including exclusively designed washbasin furniture in black French polish with brown marble and chrome legs and ZenZone amenities. The College Hotel restaurant is a free-standing restaurant located in the former school gymnasium. Here, the chef and his team pay tribute to the golden age of Dutch cuisine by honouring classics from the past from a contemporary perspective, resulting in a surprising culinary experience.

You have to consider that 90% of the staff are students. If you forget about that you might think the service isn't all that great. This is a great place for students to get experience in a busy highclass setting. The College Hotels atmosphere is very chique but at the right price. The restaurants take on Dutch with a twist is unique and delicious.

If Only You Could Just Sleep In The Lobby And Not Have to Deal With The Staff It is a pity that such a beautiful building is squandered on its current management. This lovely hotel falls far short of what one would expect at the prices being charged. To start, the lighting, which is elegantly dim when operable, was apparently sourced from the failed Soviet Union. A charmingly embarrased staffer told us that the system worked great for the first year and now it barely works at all. Our nightly room charge would probably have gone a long way to replace every switch in the hotel. While our high ceilinged room was comfortable, we were unable to sleep past 8 (painful after a typical late Amsterdam night) due to the staff, who seemed to regard every door and tool as an opportunity to make a loud sound. Supposedly they are being trained by "world class management", all we saw was world class bungling. We would expect to be given insider’s insight into a city at this price point. Not here. The front desk staff told us that the concierge does not work on weekends, but I suspect that they have no concierge at all. Instead we were given an un-annotated list of "the best 20 restaurants" that looked like it was cribbed from Fodors. Even a 2 year old piece from CN Traveller that we downloaded in desperation gave better insights. The final indignity awaited us at check out when we asked to speak with the GM. It seems "Isabelle" was not disposed to meet with us or provide us with her business card, services any GM at a top hotel would be quick to provide.

+ Quiet location, nicely designed hotel - Room supposed to be luxury double but in converted room space so quite small. no opening windows in a smoking room, blinds broken, no bottle opener or corkscrew in mini-bar, do not disturb sign meant nothing as cleaners still knocked

+ propreté et ambiance et gentillesse de l'accueil - We also thought the lightning in the room was a little insufficient (a little bit too dark).

+ Room and especially corridors very dark. great shower. lovely bedding. - Nothing negative at all other than the lighting--not good for reading. didn't like the little beaded lampshades--did not work at all with the rest of the interior design.
