Die Port Van Cleve Hotel Amsterdam
Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 176-180 - NL1012 SJ Amsterdam
The hotel is housed in a monumental 18th Century building, proclaiming a rich history, being built in the first brewery of Heineken, but enhanced with all the modern requirements you seek. Welcome to Hotel Brasserie Bodega 'Die Port van Cleve', a 4 star hotel perfectly located in the heart of Amsterdam behind the Royal Palace on the Dam Square. After the major renovation 'Die Port van Cleve' was reopened by Mr. A.H. Heineken, grandson of Mr. G. A. Heineken - who founded the Heineken company on the spot where 'Die Port van Cleve' is located now. On the 5th of September 1870 in Amsterdam 'Die Port van Cleve' opened its doors. The name of 'Die Port van Cleve' originates from the previous building on the same spot 'Het huis te Kleef' dating from 1592 in which Heineken brewed his first beer. The unique interior was put up with oak and original Delft blue tiles representing children playing adults in a parade. This performance was inspired by historical parades from the 'Golden century'. This interior with all its marvellous decorations is still available in all its glory. Amsterdam hotel 'Die Port van Cleve' counts 120 rooms all with bath and toilet and belongs to the bigger 4 stars hotels. After the Second World War the building was rebuilt as hotel. The restaurant offers a 120 seats and the Bodega 'De Blauwe Parade' offers 40 seats.Exactly how many glasses of beer have been served in 'Die Port van Cleve' since 1870 nobody knows. What we do know for sure, is the exact amount of steaks, which have been served ever since our opening on 5 September 1870. These steaks served in our brasserie have made us famous all over the world. To date there are almost 6 million numbered, certificated steaks served! In Brasserie 'De Poort' you can try the famous numbered steaks and get your own numbered certificate. Dutch and international cuisine, seats for 130 persons. Get the 'real Dutch' feeling in Bar - Bodega 'De Blauwe Parade', surrounded by genuine Delft Blue tiles. In the peaceful and modern Corner Bar 'De Hooiberg', you can watch whole Amsterdam pass by. At this beautiful location, surrounded with canals, nearby the shopping and entertainment centers, you can enjoy the real Dutch atmosphere. The hotel is housed in a monumental 18th Century building, proclaiming a rich history, being built in the first brewery of Heineken. Just recently we have finished the complete renovation of our hotel behind the monumental historic facade and brought it to the requirements of modern travelers.

Chosen at the last minute when other arrangements failed, we accepted the booking agent's recommendation and paid a higher tariff for 4 stars. Star ratings are, of course, allocated on the existence of facilities - not on their availability or condition - or even the quality of service by staff. An electric iron locked away in a computer room on level 6 qualifies as being available, but nothing more.

Location is great, the staff are friendly but requests are not promptly met. Rooms are small, in summer rooms are hot, can't open windows because it is very noisy on both sides. Best rooms in summer are the inside rooms, a bit gloomy but cool. Breakfast expensive - go out of the hotel, turn right about a block, cross the street and get your breakfast t a small bakery with fresh stuff. Meals are expensive and over rated. Go eat someplace else, excellent restaurants (such as Luyck's or de Vijf Vliegen or Haasje Klaasje all within less than 10 minutes walking) won't cost you that much more. The bar is good, food is also cheaper there. It's an average quality hotel at inflated prices but you can't beat The Location - it's the most strategic for exploring Amsterdam

Happy with the service - would definitely go there again. Only 'complaint' is that the third bed I requested was a rather uncomfortable folding bed - but since I didn't have to use it, I'm not really complaining :)) Watch out for minibar prices.
