The rooms and hotel were beautiful and luxurious. The room service was excellent. The bathrooms were beautiful, loved the shower!! The spa was nice and the breakfast was delicious. Expensive, but worth it for a special occasion. The locaion is just okay...there is an excellent resturant across the canal. It is the little boat, it's a nice treat for dinner.

This is a great place to stay in Amsterdam. The location is great - next to a lot of cool sites and right on the river. The rooms are nice (nothing too special, but nice). The bathrobes are GREAT, though. It is close to the Bulldog Cafe, too.

My wife/young child and I stayed here for 3 days between Christmas and New Year. The Hotel is outstanding - staff friendly - location superb. One of the best 5 star hotels I've stayed in. Slight drawback is the price of breakfast - beware!!

I spent 3 nights at the Amstel hotel this winter and generally agree with everything that has been said here. It is wonderful and the stuff is very helpful and friendly and the facilities at the health center are superb. But ....... what´s with the bed´s?!?! I stayed at a junior suite and what was supposed to be a king-sized bed in reality turned out to be just two mattresses pushed together... Not very nice to wake up in the crack. And even apart from the crack, the bed was just not comfortable - I slept badly, even though usually, as soon as I touch the covers I sleep like a bear. Strange thing for a junior suite at a 5* star hotel. May be I am being too nitpicky, but I would expect being able to have a good nights sleep for almost 500 euros a night..... Apart from that breakfast was a bit boring too - just some 3 kind of cheeses, ham, and a fruit salad. If you want anything else, like eggs, you have to order it separately and wait for it. But the waiters at the restaurant were the most charming and helpful I have ever come across - so that compensated.

The Amstel is a seriously plush and beautiful hotel. The exterior is quite regal and overlooks The Amstel canal, hence the name. The service was pleasant and we were treated with highly professional customer service. The rooms were huge and had all the facilities, that one would expect. The minibar, would have to be the best I have ever seen in any 5 star hotel. The bathroom incredibly spacious and comfortable. The bed large and very comfortable. The only hiccup was when an individual attempted to enter our room upon two occasions without knocking. It was quite clear that there were people in the room as the television was on, but someone was able to enter the room with the correct card. Thankfully, we had the chain on the door which prevented the person from entering. We mentioned this to security and they seem to think it was a figment of our imagination and it clearly was not. It was quite worrisome as we had a laptop and other valuables. So all I can say is....be wary about this. The gym was perfect and overlooked The Amstel. The restaurant was just fantastic for both breakfast and dinner. We even saw the Dutch Queen! Stay at The Amstel, but just ensure to lock all your valuables away safely.

Lovely old hotel at a canal.. Rooms are classic and beautiful with the best rainshower in the world as far as I can tell..the bath fills in a short while which is also great.. The restaurant is nice as well as the bar downstairs with a lovely view of the canals.

Simply one of the best 5 stars hotels we have stayed at (cf. Ritz in Barcelona, Villa Igea in Palermo, Gabbia D'Oro in Verona, Danieli in Venice, La Mirande in Avignon) ... this hotel has only 1 problem; when arriving you don't want to go out anymore to discover a thrilling Amsterdam - tip: rent a bike to do so though... we stayed in June 2003 and had a room with channel view (recommended). Staff is very friendly and service oriented. What a room - what a swimming pool - what a jacuzzi - what a shower!!! - what a restaurant - what a breakfast - in short: what a hotel ... everything "wunderbar"

The Amstel is a wonderful hotel !! The rooms were large, well appointed, and welcoming. We had a canal view which was stunning and well worth the extra cost. The bathroom was also extrelmely large (by hotel standards) with a seperate shower and large bathtub, as well as a seperate room for the toilet. It is a short walk to rent bikes for touring the city, which is the best way to appreciate Amsterdam. The hotel is not in the very center of all the activities, but only a short bike ride to all the major areas. I have stayed in the center of town before (at the trendy Blake), but for the size of the rooms and the view I would certainly choose the Amstel again.
