This hotel was expensive, but is located in a relatively convenient location, a 15 minute walk to St. Peter's and across the bridge to great restaurants and sights (Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, and Piazza Navona). The staff spoke good English and was always helpful. The cold breakfast was good with plenty of choices; ham, cheese, fruit, pastries and juices that are served from 6:30 to 10:30 every morning. We walked everywhere from the hotel at all hours. Rome is an extremely safe city. The hotel was very nice and made our stay very comfortable. The room was very clean, and our room had a small balcony. The beds were very firm and made of foam, it was much better than a sagging spring bed. The front desk is very helpful if you need directions and will even call a cab if you need one. We spent one day in Florence. A cab ride to the train station cost 9 euros. A first class ticket was $38 (one-way)on the non-stop EuroStar (154 miles) and took 90 minutes.

I do not understand Hotel dei Mellini's booking process at all. It makes me wonder if they are overbooking because I checked the hotel's online booking system and there were rooms showing available for my dates. I then verified by sending the hotel an email with the same date information given and was told that there were no rooms available.

It was a lovely hotel that had an intimate feel about it. The staff were friendly and competent. The layout of the hotel rooms gave it a homely feel. It was a lovely treat for my mother who was able to visit the vatican for the first time to celebrate her 80th year. The only dissapointment was we could not find a good restaurant locally. Unfortunately the ones we visited were pretty bad for Italian standards. Perhaps we should have asked the staff?

Very nice location, centrally located between the old centre and The Vatican. The room was very clean and quiet. Breakfast buffet could offer a bit more variety. We had a great time!

Charming neighborhood hotel My husband and I spent 3 nights at Hotel dei Mellini and very much enjoyed our time at this small, friendly hotel. Dei Mellini is on Rome’s "left bank" - meaning it’s on the same side of the river as Vatican City and across the river from Piazza del Popolo, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, etc. These sites and others are reachable by foot however (15-20 minutes brisk walking), and in fact, if you like walking, this hotel is a great location for you. The neighborhood is not at all touristy. There are several wine bars and small cafes nearby; also food, wine, pastry and other kinds of shops. Riverfront is 2 blocks away; nearest bridge across, about 6 blocks. We had a large king-bed room with all the little extras (robes, minibar, turn-down service, etc.) and like the light-filled public areas of the hotel, it was attractively and comfortably furnished. The hotel provides a lovely breakfast (continental++)and there’s a small lobby bar, but there’s no restaurant. Front desk staff were super!

The location was perfect, the service wonderful and the breakfast more than expected. The staff were great even having a bagged breakfast ready for us to take at 4:00 am when we had to leave to get to the airport!!

Great Location & Great Value We made last minute online reservations and were very pleasantly surprised at both the quality of the hotel and the central location. Although located on the "Vatican" side of the river, it is just a couple easy walking blocks from a bridge that takes you right to the center of Rome. We had no problem walking to the Coliseum/Forum, Spanish Steps, Piazza Navona or St. Peter’s. One of the "triples" we booked was actually a very sweet "suite". Hotel is on a quiet, one-way street so even a front room is good. Only downside was that there was no operating ac, but March is cool enough with the window open. If it was August I might not feel that way. A definite endorsement for Hotel Dei Mellini! Traveler's tip on local attractions Pay the ten euros for a tour of the Coliseum & Palatine Hill. It gets you past the long entrance lines and you receive a great deal of info about both that you would have to pour through your guide book to get. Also, the walk up the Palatine is steep!
