Hotels in Dubai are extravagant, luxurious and wonderfully over the top. After all, this is the home of not one but two of the tallest hotels in the world. The iconic Burj al Arab, shaped like a dhow's sail, stands 321m above the sea. The opening of the Rose Tower, however, took away its crown as tallest hotel. This huge shard-like skyscraper stands at a staggering 333m and has 72 storeys. Dubai hotels impress for their locations too. The famous Palm Islands are artificially constructed islands jutting out into the Persian Gulf with boutique hotels and villas. The massive hotel Atlantis, which sits on Palm Jumeirah, opened in November 2008 and contains a water park, dolphin bay and underwater city.
