Metropolitan (Metropolitan)
27 South Sathon Rd., Tungmahamek, Sathorn - 100120 Bangkok
The hotel has 171 rooms, including four penthouse suites and a two-bedroom presidential fiefdom. Even the smallest room – the 22 City Rooms at 29sq metres each – is generous, with ample volumes a key facet of the hotel’s design. This is achieved with a sleek, contemporary aesthetic created by Kathryn Kng, Singapore’s most innovative interior architect. Kng creates sophistication through the unconventional combination of materials – fresh and original, acknowledging influences from both the East and West. She focuses on natural properties. At the Metropolitan Bangkok, for example, the lobby uses Makha wood from Thailand combined with oxidized brass paneling. Volumes are powerfully open, serene and calming. These airy interiors are filled with light – the work of Isometrix, a London-based lighting company set up by architect Arnold Chan. In recent years, Isometrix has collaborated with major interior designers including Calvin Tsao, Christian Liaigre and John Pawson on hotels, boutiques and restaurants worldwide. The company’s architectural approach underlines the simple sophistication of a beautiful, well-conceived space. The detailing is also important, and includes carefully sourced Asian antiques. For example, the hotel's four penthouse suites and single presidential suite share an 11th floor corridor dressed with antique teakwood carving, Chinese 'horse shoe' chairs and temple bells. Step inside, and the penthouse suites feature original Helen Yardley-designed rugs, Patricia Urguilo sofas, Artemide Melampo table lamps, and bamboo coffee tables from Northern Thailand. Highlights of the presidential suite include a red lacquer cabinet, and a custom-designed ceiling light in handblown red and orange glass. All other rooms feature one-off pieces by Natee Utarit, a Thai artist considered to be among the country’s most exciting young talents. Utarit lives and works in Bangkok, and exhibits regularly, with a history of acclaimed solo shows across Asia. Luxury details range from mosaic and limestone bathrooms, to private terraces (select suites only), to Thai silk cushions and curtains, and COMO Shambhala bathroom amenities. Floor-to-ceiling windows are another conspicuous feature.

Fantastic hotel! Preferred it to the Banyan Tree next door. So quiet and relaxing. Great facilities and attention to detail of the service provided by the staff. Loved the Bose hi-fi in room. My wife and I are returning in three week time for another stay.

Take the metropolitan room. Much bigger and slightly more expensive. With the good size sitting area it is good value for money. The thai massages are divine. Best ever. The location is oke but you need a taxi to get to whereever you like to go except for the drink with the best view, next door on the roof of the BayanTree hotel (that is overpriced as an hotel).

This was a really great hotel. The rooms were beautiful and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. If you have the option of getting breakfast included with your room, I would definitely do it. The breakfasts are delicious and there are so many choices. The hotel also isn't that close to anything that looked like it would have somewhere to eat breakfast.

The style and decor is extremely modern and chic, the staff are the friendliest and most helpful I have experienced, and the facilities were wonderful. The spa, the exercise room, the steam room and Sauna, the restaurants, the Metro bar . . . My wife and I can't stop dreaming of our return.

We got married in Bangkok last weekend, and spent our wedding night at the Metropolitan. When I made the booking on AsiaRooms.com I ticked the box about us being honeymooners, and followed it up with a call to the hotel to emphasise this point in the hope that they would give s preferential service. When I made the call I mentioned that after the wedding we'd bring some friends back to the hotel's bar, and the reservations staff asked me to call on the day of the wedding with numbers so they could book a table in the bar for us. When I called on the wedding day, it transpired that the hotel bar was closed because of local government elections (no alcohol is served in Thailand when elections are on), however the Metropolitan excelled itself, by upgrading us to a two-floor Penthouse Suite, with our own bar staff, so that we could have a private party! We did have to pay corkage on all the champagne we brought into the hotel from the wedding, but they even reduced this price for us. When we arrived after the wedding we were personally met by the front office manager, who open the car door for us, welcomed us by name and congratulated us on our marriage. We were treated like royalty, some 30+ of our friends came back and partied in our suite, which was more like a private nightclub! The room itself was fabulous, with all the understated, minimalist style that the hotel is famous for. Breakfast was included in the price of the room, and was served in it's Cy'an restaurant, and was as excellent as I would expect from a restaurant of this calibre.

Absolutely loved this hotel: service was impeccable (efficient, polite, unobtrusive), room gorgeous, food at Cyan restaurant delicious. The organic restaurant, Glow, was a bit pretentious but the breakfasts are great. It's tricky to find the pool but even that's wonderful once you do. The spa at the hotel is great value and excellent service, again. There's a Met Bar which is great for a drink in the week. At the weekend it's right there if you want to party but if you want a quiet drink, forget it!!
