Bamboo Garden
24 Xia Shi Qiao, Gu Lou Street Xicheng District - Beijing
The Zhuyuan (Bamboo Garden) Guesthouse is a classical Chinese garden-style structure in a quiet lane west of the Drum Tower in Beijing. The guesthouse was formerly the residence of Sheng Xuanhuai, the Minister of Post of the late Qing Dynasty(1644-1911). It is also said to be the garden of Li Lianying, a noted eunuch of the Qing Dynasty. Since the late Qing Dynasty, many celebrated Chinese people, including Ma Hansan, Dong Biwu, and Kang Sheng had lived in this guesthouse. The halls and pavillions in the building are linked by tortuous, long corridors, with a tranquil and elegant surrounding of bamboo groves, rockeries, and fountains. The hotel sees blooming flowers in spring, colorful lanterns and green bamboo swaying in the breeze in summer and autumn, and pines and snows in winter, all making the hotel an ideal place to hold banquets and greet guests....

Staff was English speaking, but you need to ask specific questions. Room was very clean, but beds were a little hard. Location is good if you want to visit and experience old Beijing. We had a great time.Subway station was 3 blocks away. There was a little problem with the exchange, they want only new dollar bills;front desk didn't accept stained or wrinkle dollar bills.

I went with my boyfriend to Bamboo Garden Hotel and we stayed for one week. I loved the settings of the hotel with the typical Chinese garden. People were very warmful and English was fair. It's 20mn walk from restaurants and bars at night and 10mn walk from Gulou station. I'd definitely come back there

I am an American ex-pat living in China. Recently some froends came to visit from home and wanted to see Beijing. I booked rooms at the Bamboo Garden and found that it was a much better deal than I had imagined. Far better priced than most other "luxury" hotels around the city, it provides an incredible local in the old part of the city, near the Drum and Bell Towers. The hotel is located amidst a winding array of old chinese style hu-tongs, or small alley neighborhoods. It is a very short walk(5-10 minutes) from the subway and has excellent grounds. The rooms are standard, though they offer a bit of luxury on the high end, but all are very comfortable and come with all the western necessities. Most of all , the staff is courteous and helpful. They have a nice restaurant and a great Health/Beauty Spa that will provide you with a real Chinese medical massage(no "extra" services offered). If you want to really experience Beijing and/or China, this is the place to stay. Of course, it helps that you will save a bundle of money to spend at the Great Wall or the Pearl Market.

I booked the Bamboo Garden Hotel online after much research. The price seemed good and naturally, since I had never been to Beijing, I knew nothing about the location except that it was in an older part of Beijing.

THE HOTEL GROUNDS ARE AMAZING. WITH OLD BAMBOO GARDENS AN FISH PONDS COVERING INSIDE COURTYARDS. IT IS THE PERFECT PLACE TO REST AND ENJOY TEA. THE BEIJING ZOO IS A CAB RIDE AWAY. THERE IS ALSO A GREAT BAR AT THE HOTEL WITH AN ATTENTIVE STAFF. IN THE EVENING TRAVELERS GATHER AND COMPARE ADVENTURES OF THEIR JOURNEY OVER BEER. THE ROOMS ARE VERY CLEAN AND ARE IN TRADITIONAL CHINESE STYLE. MANY ROOMS HAVE BALCONIES WHICH OVER LOOK THE GARDENS. AIR CONDITIONING AND SIT DOWN TOILETS ARE THE DEAL IN CHINA! THE BEST THING CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!!! JASON

I loved the gardens and the bamboo. The price quoted was misleading. They did upgrade my room but at a substantially higher price than quoted. The staff is friendly. Be careful if you can't take stairs to request a ground floor room. Also, they were tearing up the pavement and it was inconvenient. However, they do speak English which is a plus. I'll return because it feels homey and the bed was great along with little touches like adequate heat (Beijing winters are notoriously cold), a beauty salon just down the street and old town and central town access easily. Go if you can. Breakfast is nice and the gals are accommodating for special requests such as ketchup (the red stuff) and salt...
