THIS WAS A HORRIBLE HOTEL EXPERIENCE. We arrived at the hotel as we booked on Orbitz and had the voucher that we were supposed to print that showed we prepaid . The man at the front counter, who didn't understand English very well was very rude and insisted that he would have to charge us again AND we only had 1 room (when we paid for 2 on Orbitz). I insisted that we already paid on Orbitz (which I've used a billion times with no problem) and he said it was not a true website and he had never heard of it and worked at the hotel for 5 years. He was very rude and irrate and I said I would wait for the manager as this guy was not nice or helpful at all (he was going to charge us again!). The man said he did not know when the manager would arrive but since I already paid I said I will just have to wait because I'm not going to pay twice. When the manager arrived, he was very nice and took care of business very fast. I think he needs to get rid of the idiot behind the counter as it is going to make him lose business. Plus, he barely knows how to speak English. We asked if there were any close pubs near by and his answer was, "They close at 11pm"-- obviously does not know english.... The rooms were not great and I was scared to go into the shower barefoot, but it was a good location and I expected it to be a little more rundown than your typical American Hotel. I would not recommend this hotel as long as the man that helped us was there-- if the owner gets nice, respectful employees, it would have been a much better experience.
I reserved a room at the Adare for December and right from the start I asked explanations on why the price they confirmed to me is different and higher than that advertised on their web-site and they never explained. When I later e-mailed to cancel my reservation (20 days before arrival) they advised I have to pay a cancellation fee. The several times I tried to call the Hotel directly for an explanation, the Manager couldn't be found and it seems only the night porter runs the reception and can't help with problems. NOT RELIABLE AT ALL.
Booked in for the week, only stayed one night. Among the many complaints: Once turned on, the shower that would not turn off. Shower cubicle door broken so would not close. Only one towel supplied per person. No light bulbs in any of the light fittings except for one small bedside lamp. Hairdryer supplied so hot to use it would probably have resulted in 3rd degree burns to the scalp if I had used it! When I went to use the spare pillow, it was dirty (it even had blood stains on it) and there was no clean pillow case supplied with it! The wallpaper was even peeling off the walls in one corner of the room. When I complained the next morning, I was promised another room that I could move into that afternoon, so went off for the day, but upon my return that evening, the room was unavailable, but was told that a plumber had been into fix the shower and that I would have to stay in the same same room. The shower had not been fixed, and the other items listed above were not seen to either! So I booked out and even that was a nightmare! The Receptionist attempted to charge me for 2 days as a cancellation fee as 'I was cancelling the booking'. (never mind that I was being forced out because of the condition of the room)! Then when I decided to pay in cash rather than by credit card, he refused to give me a receipt, he insisted the 'invoice' was the receipt!... I had to patiently explain to him that the invoice was the request for payment and that he would have to supply me with a receipt so I would have proof that I had paid him by cash, in the event the Hotel tried to take the money again from my credit card (as they had my credit card number). All in all, a shabby little hotel!
My stay at the Adare was booked as part of a 2-city package that included air, hotel(s), and flight between the 2 cities. Averaged out, my off-season stay at the Adare was inexpensive, so I was ok with it (had I paid big $ for the Adare, I may not have been 'ok'). As I always do, I am breaking my review into the GREAT, GOOD, BAD, and the UGLY. I will include some 'bottom line' statements and recommendations at the end. Here goes . . . GREAT: # 1 - The Adare is very nicely located at about a 5 minute walk from Paddington Station on the fringe of relaxing Hyde Park. If you like to stay right 'in the action' you may not like this location, but I generally like to spend my time in a bustling city and then retreat back to a quiet setting at night. The Hyde Park area is really great (as is London)! # 2 - The two girls that serve you breakfast in the morning and clean your room in the afternoon are great. One is from Spain, the other is a local girl. My wife and I found them to be cute and friendly (heads up single guys!). GOOD: # 1 - Well, when we arrived the somewhat indifferent guy at the desk found record of our reservation. I always tend to worry with online travel package groups. That's good, isn't it? # 2 - The breakfast in the morning is nice and pretty substantial (ham, eggs, juices, etc.) BAD (room for improvement): # 1 - We arrived way earlier than check-in time (our problem, not the hotel's) - indifferent guy suggested we just leave our bags at the bottom of some steps near his desk. They would have been at the base of the lower level hallway and in a very vulnerable location. I don't expect anyone to watch my bags and I know it's my risk, but how about a location to store them that at least feels a bit secure, or at least even suggests you care a little bit? # 2 - This hotel is very spartan. The lobby is about 12 x 15 ft. and there are not elevators - and plenty of winding stairs as the hotel is 'tall & narrow'. I'm a jock so I didn't mind, but be aware. UGLY: # 1 - Our room at Adare looked, smelled, and just . . . felt old. It kind of felt like visiting a grandparent as a child. However . . . I can deal with a tired room - the thing I cannot accept is wildlife and extreme filth. Our room did NOT have anything extremely unsanitary - it was just old with a little ripped carpet here, and old mismatched furniture there. The breakfast hotties seemed to do a nice job of cleaning it. BOTTOM LINE / RECOMMENDATIONS: # 1 - If you're just looking for a place to hang your hat while you explore the great city of London and you're not too picky AND you get a good rate, you should be ok with the Adare. # 2 - If you arrive way before check-in (like we did and you probably will if arriving directly from the U.S.) AND you find a place you can feel ok about leaving your luggage at the hotel, I highly recommend taking a morning stroll around Hyde Park. You can stroll around a pretty lake with a neat little lakeside bistro - a great very 'English-feeling' start to your trip. So, an ok hotel in a great city.
My husband and I just stayed 4 days at Hotel Adare. First impression was that it was old with small rooms, but it looked okay - until we went to bed in the evening. We nearly got a chok - the bed springs were literally just beneath the surface of the madras. Also the room we stayed in were downstairs, just beside the breakfast room. There is a creaking door, which is opened an closed a lot, I must say!! I am not going back to that hotel again, and can not recommend it to anyone. Too bad, as it is located in a very nice area.

I checked into The Adare Hotel on a Monday. The hotel clerk asked if I wanted to pay for our stay then or upon our departure. We were supposed to be there 4 nights so I just decided to pay with my credit card upon check-in. Big mistake! Shortly after getting to our room, I received a phone call from home about an emergency with my daughter. I went downstairs to speak to the hotel clerk about a partial refund on my bill. He said it was not possible and that I would have to speak to the Manager. The manager did come but left so quickly that I was not able to talk to him. I did get to talk to the assistant manager? but he told me there was a 72 hr. cancellation policy and that I would have to pay at least 2 nights. Fine, I said. We left The Tuesday morning to catch a flight out of Gatwick Airport Wednesday morning. If you know the trains in London, it takes about an hour to get from central London to Gatwick. Our flight was for 08:30 but we had to be there 3 hours before our departure and the trains don't start running until 05:30. The hotel would have made us pay another night if we would have stayed past 10:00 am, that Tuesday morning. We asked that the clerk call a cab for us to be at the hotel for 10:00 am. The cab driver arrived at 09:30 as we were preparing to check out. He was in a hurry so the hotel clerk told me he would take care of the bill and refund the money back to my credit card. Each night at the hotel was 68 British pounds. My card was charged for 4 nights. Thats 272.00 British pounds. That converts into $549.00 my credit card was charged for a nights stay and 1 more night due to the cancellation policy. The website for the Adare doesn't tell the whole story. Our room was a little on the shabby side. The linen looked worn, the fan in the bathroom was very noisy. It was snowing in London when wew were there. There was a draft coming through the window but the heat is not turned on until 10:00 pm. We caught 4 channels on the television with very poor reception by a wire coathanger. Check it out at the Adare if you are ever there. It's room 7 on the second floor. Please consider carefully before you stay here. I am very sorry thay I stayed here. I am out a lot of money because I trusted someone to do the right thing and refund my money.
What we saw on the website made the hotel look a very nice place to stay and it was near to the local tube etc. Also it had free parking, which we wanted as it is difficult to park in London. When we arrived at the reception it seemed ok at first and the first flight of stairs looked decent. But we got to the 4th floor where our room was and there were flies everywhere. Then we went to the room, which was also full of flies. The room was filthy. There is no way we would sleep on those beds! I would not have touched the tea/coffee facilities either. The shower/toilet room was more like a cupboard and that was also filthy. So we just handed the keys back and went to look for a more decent hotel as we were NOT staying there. It may be cheap but it is filthy!
This nice littel hotel has no elevator, but I would like this would not change either. Like the other old interior, the stairs, the windoows, the location of the rooms - I loved it. And it is located in Paddington and the street and the quarter are charming and vivacious. Round the corner are shops where you can buy everything to survive - newspaper, milk, food, open 24 hr. Very good for travellers. My first bed & breakfast in England in 1975 was an experience. I had to pay the heating by coins. And run out of coins, naturally. And it was real old and English lodging, I liked it. So it was in 2006 here, in the big heat of this summer. Staff was great and helped me a lot with all, maps, infos etc. I could even let my luggage the whole day though I was over with my room. So I had another day in London. I had a great time in this hotel and will come back. I am just booking for my niece.
My boyfriend and I stayed in this hotel for one night while travelling back from France. We paid £50 each for this disgusting run down hotel. The window in the room was cracked, the room where very old fashioned and not very clean. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
I have to say this was the worst hotel I have every stayed at. When we arrived we were told that there was no rooms in the hotel but they had us booked in their other hotel the "ABC" hotel just a few meters away. We went down there to be greeted by some very strange people who seemed to huddle around in groups. There was no reception but a hole in the wall to chat to a very rude guy. We were told our room was not ready and it would be in 30 minutes. I went back down to Adare to complain about the place as it was absolutely disgusting but he said see what the room was like and if we were still not happy then come back to him. We got into our room and the three os could hardly fit in together. It was awful, the ensuite was like an airport toilet but it had a shower in it as well. I marched straight back down to Adare and he said to go get our bags and he would see what he could move around. When we arrived back he said he had moved things around and they would give us one of their best and biggest rooms. Yes it was big but if that is their best room they should be shut down. We were given room 1 which is in the basement. Its a family room but in very bad condition. We were all tired so decided not to refuse the room as we had paid up our money (Hotelclub) and we had been told that there was no availability so didnt want to be out on the streets. On a positive note the sheets were clean and the towels also but that was it. The room was roasting, the window could not be opened and rubbish was left outside the window so there was a bad smell. I pulled out one of the beds to find a socket and saw old crisps under the bed so obviously the room had not been cleaned. Sorry for the long review but I have to say very strongly that unless you are very desperate do not stay here or you will be very disappointed.
Booked Online thru their site. Got it for 42 Pounds., price was the main reason for choice as I was only there for 1 night connecting to Crete the next day. As far as the hotel goes, its looks very old, rooms are really small. I had a single bed but that was smaller than most singles. There is no A/C so if you are there during london hot temps, try to avoid or ask for a room with an AC which I do not think they have. No lift available so some tugging is required to get your luggage up. Service was there but not best. On a good note, the hotel does offer a nice descent breakfast if you got it with the rate, much cheaper than going out for it. Dining room is very limited so make sure you have a space. The location is good as it is very close to paddington station and some near places withing walking distance.
I have been to Europe on a budget many times, and have stayed in many small hotels like this one. However, I have to say that I was extremely disappointed in this hotel, which was part of a package deal. We just returned from a 5 day visit to London, and stayed in Room 11 at this establishment, which I would recommend avoiding. The room was TINY, which would have been fine had it been the only problem. However, it was not. The biggest problem was the bed, which was also small, hard as a rock and made up with a flat sheet that barely covered the top of the mattress. What this meant was that any time my husband or I turned over in the night, the sheet would inevitably shift; we spent half the night repositioning the bedding to avoid sleeping on the bare, less-than savory mattress. You want your room to be a bit of a haven when you are traveling, and this was most decidedly not. The paint was peeling from the ceiling, and the window (the room faced the street) did little to reduce the street noise, which included bus and ambulance traffic. The bathroom was also very small (one of those after-the-fact prefab clost showers), which would have been acceptable ordinarily, but it was also very mildewy. I read an earlier review that said that a person went out and bought a bleach pen to take care of that; because of limited time, I did not want to do that, but I would recommend that as an option. There was a very small cupboard for clothes, and small nightstand that fell apart when we opened it (it was useless for storing anything anyway, as it was completely filled up with the London yellow and white pages). The maid service was poor as well. Two out of the 5 nights we spent there, the room was never made up at all. Interestingly, I emailed the reservations staff prior to booking to check in about some negative reviews that were posted here, and to request a quiet room. Their response was: "Dear Ms., We are not aware of any of the issues you have raised in your e-mail. All the rooms at the Adare are kept clean and tidy at all times. Unfortunately we will not be able to offer you a room in the back of the hotel as all our rooms located to the rear of the premises are triple rooms and we are pretty much fully booked for the duration of your stay. We can however guarantee you a nice spacious double room. Regards, Reservations ADARE HOTEL " I would say that the room was neither tidy nor spacious. There were two things that were acceptable: the location is good (about 3 blocks's walk from Paddington Station), and the two women making and serving the breakfast were very hard workers, and pleasant as well. We had far better luck in the second half of our trip in Paris.
Myself and my sister booked a weekend in London to treat ourselves. We saw what looked like a nice reasonable hotel on the internet. The picture of the room was nice and bright with lovely white bedcovers and bright clean simple decoration. We arrived late evening and were greeted by the friendly gentleman at reception...... The stairs didnt bother us but we couldnt wait to chill out in our room before heading out... We were conftonted with a dark and dreary room - old dark wallpaper, a black net curtain, old blankets and overall shoddiness. The ensuite was of formica walling, and smelt damp and old. We pleasantly asked if we could change room but that was not possible. He was not so cheery then... There was only enough hot water for one person to have a shower and on our last morning the water was ice cold...all used up . just as well we didnt go to a smokey pub the night before or we would have stank the tube out. on our way home. It really put a damper on our weekend but the rest of our trip was fun Breakfast was fine and the staff were friendly. All in all I would most definatly not recomend it to anyone. They money they make ( and they are full most of the time) does not go into the rooms thats for sure.
The Adare had a great location. The staff was wonderful. Breakfast was served with a smile everyday. The rooms were clean. Our room was in the back and was quiet. I would stay there again and recommend The Adare to my friends. Be prepared to walk stairs.
We stayed 5 nights in June 2004. Close to the tube. Decent shower- good water pressure and hot water. Very nice breakfast. Horrible bed- very old and uncomfortable mattress. Made us feel dirty. NOISY street. We love the Paddington area- close to two tube lines, but we'd stay on a quieter street next time. Maybe we're just getting old...
Great location in which to tour London. Close to Hyde Park and 2 tube stations. The room was a little dated but all in all, not too bad. We had a 3rd floor walk up, so be prepared to climb some stairs. The people who worked there were very nice. The breakfast was good. We found the bathroom to have mold in the shower caulk, but I walked down to a nearby store and bought some spray bleach and gave it a once over. Other than that, the room itself was ok.
I purchased a vacation package, with airfare and hotel accommodations for 6 nights. And may I say for a steal from Europe ASAP. The hotel with this package was The Adare Hotel. It was more like a B&B. The rooms are small and clean. But, how much time are you going to be in it anyways? With a few repairs here and there, like oldish wall paper and things like that it would be above average for the price. The breakfasts are a big traditional English Breakfast. The girls that serve you start your day off with a smile, they are also the ones that keep your rooms nice and tidy for you. Bless their hearts! On the walk to and from Paddington Station you will pass small shops and restaurants that serve very affordable and tasty eats.
My husband and I were not sure what to expect, especially with this being our first trip to London, but we were pleasantly surprised by the accommodations at the Adare Hotel. The staff was great, very friendly. We stayed in double room on the first floor. Our room was very clean, but rather cramped. The bathroom is small, shower only, but also very clean. My only complaint about this hotel would be the size of the room, and I personally was concerned about the cleanliness of the linens. The breakfast is great, plenty to energize you for a day of sightseeing and if that doesn't suffice, try Mimo's Cafe around the corner. As for the location, it can't be beat. Less than a 5 minute walk from Paddington Station and a pretty quiety neighborhood. All in all, I think we would stay again and the only thing preventing that would be if we found a larger room at the same price.
Myself and two friends had booked 3 rooms at the Adare House for a night. We travelled down from Edinburgh on the Saturday morning and headed for the hotel to put our cases in and were greeted by the man on reception who told us that they had two rooms for us and another room for us at their sister hotel across the road in another street. After asking why this was, we were told that they had a problem with one of the rooms (plumbing), when we asked why we hadnt been contacted about this the man just shrugged and said it had happened the night before. I dont think it was fair expecting 3 young women to split up and leave 1 of them to go to another hotel on their own. If we had been contacted about this we could have made other arrangements before we had travelled down. Due to this, our visit to London was spent in an Internet Cafe trying to find accommodation they sitting on a tube most of the day. In future I will certainly be using a reputable hotel when coming down to London!!!
I recently stayed at the Adare Hotel in London. It is a great place for anyone looking for a cheap, centrally located b&b in London. It is really close to Hyde Park, Paddington Station (with Heathrow Express), and Oxford Street. The rooms are small, but who cares!! They are clean and really affordable. Good place to stay, for a single room, ask for room 19, it is quiet and in the back of the hotel, though on the 6th floor!! (no elevator)
Previous reviewers have already mentioned the very poor state of the rooms. Here are my issues: 1) The hotel charged 4% on top of the price quoted on the website through which I booked because I paid by credit card, not cash! 2) The hotel has no luggage room. If you check out in the morning but your flight leaves in the evening you can leave your luggage in the hall next to the staircase but the hotel states expressly that they don't guarantee that your luggage will still be there when you return! 3) Due to a booking error on part of the hotel I had to change to a different room during my 3-night stay. When I entered the new room (coming back from the city in the early evening) I found myself without my suitcase... The man who was at the reception at the time was friendly enough and searched through several basement rooms, but to no avail. He then said that there was nothing else he could do and that I had to wait until the morning until the manager would arrive. He also said it was unlikely that my suitcase was still in my old room because the new occupants would surely have brought this to his attention. Next morning, 8:15, the man from the nightwatch and the person who presumably was the manager were at the reception desk together. I explained the situation to Mr. Manager and expressed that I was looking forward to having my suitcase back when I would be finished with breakfast. At 8:45 I'm back from breakfast. Mr. Manager says that he tried to ring the people who were staying in my previous room but that nobody was answering the phone. When I suggested that he should perhaps knock on the door of the room he said that he would not do that and that I just had to wait until the occupants might decide to answer the phone. I had the impression he did not want to miss anything of the TV program he was following. Since I had no intention of hanging around until god-knows-when, I took matters in my own hands, knocked on the door of what used to be my room and lo and behold, a sleepy person then handed me my suitcase and I could at last have a shave and a shower. Mr. Manager made no apologies whatsoever for the situation the hotel had created. He just said cheerily: "See, your suitcase did not get lost!" Avoid this place.
