+ The hotel location is perfect, between vondelpark and leisdeplein, really quiet and friendly - I didn't see air conditioner in the rooms but in amsterdam it doesn't get really hot. if it does, rent a bike and go sightseeing

+ The hotel alexander is a chartming well-kept hotel in a terrific, but peaceful location. the family room, in which we stayed was located right in the courtyard. it is a five minute walk from the museum area, and close to all amenities. the staff was always helpful.

+ The hotel alexander is in an excellent location 2 mins walks from the leidseplein which is full of everytihing you need. it is amazing value on price. we stayed in a quad-room which had everything we need including to our suprise a fridge and a safe. the staff were extremely helpful and polite both during our stay and on the phone prior to our trip. i would highly recommend the hotel alexander to anyone visitng amsterdam.

+ Hotel is located in a good area and there are a number of attractions close at hand. access to trams, the canal bus also easy. pleasant and safe place to stay. - Lift acces is not to verevry flaw and you don't want to climb some oif those steep steps. my mother of eighty would have found thsi insurmountable. more care needs to be taken in allocating rooms. we changed ours. particulary peaved off about have to pay an additional 4% for using my card. in none of the 7 hotels that i lived in europe did i encounter this pricing. left a sour taste to the holiday. the cost of phoen calls also seem disproprotionately high compared to other establishments which i stayed at.

+ Forget all the other carping reviews of lack of english breakfast, coffee making facilities and steep stairs: that's the norm for amsterdam! that aside this is an excellent hotel and highly recommended, albeit a bit pricey. beautifully clean and decorated. rooms excellent. well situated near the major museums and leid square. staff very helpful. would certainly stay there again. - Just a bit pricey.

We stayed at the Hotel Alexander mid June for 5 nights. It was one of the few places that could accomodate a family of 6 without staying in separate rooms. The location was excellent, near the Leidesplan, Van Gogh and Rykes museum and the Hinneken Brewery. There were bank machines just down the corner and a canal boat stop across the street. Car rental was within walking distance and a good Italian restaurant right around the corner. I was particularly pleased with the helpful service and excellent breakfast. Even before we arrived in Amsterdam the hotel staff helped with finding car rental and arranging for last minute extra family member. The bathroom was clean and the beds comfortable. The hotel is on a treed street and with a court yard in the back. If I go to Amsterdam again I will choose this excellent hotel.

Very freindly staff and helpful. Rooms were good value for money and clean and tidy good washing facilitys both bath and shower, not too far from leidsplein bout 5 in walk from tram/canal service definetly will be staying there again!!!!!!!!! Thank you

Stayed here in August 2007 for 3 nights. Nice enough place but you should be aware of a few things. The location is great. Easy walk to the Tram but a few blocks from the big main Square. The sidewalk seemed quiet enough and it was very safe to go pretty much anywhere we went from there. The breakfast is good but a little crowded. People were friendly, room was kept clean all the time. My issues are that the doors slam so hard the whole building shakes when someone comes in at 2:30 AM and letting go of thier door sounds like an explosion in the hallway. Some hydraulic door closers would be a nice addition to this hotel. I stayed in room 28. Don't stay in this room! The bathroom cieling is sloped downwaqrd so that I could literaly not stand up straight in the room! I had a big croutch going to stand in the shower. See attached picture.

For a 3 star hotel it was really great, very good value for money. The breakfast was good, didn´t have much choice but it was quite enough. Staff really nice.

Convenient to city centre, friendly staff and a good breakfast. Narrow corridors, steep steps and tight corners for those with suitcases. All down to the design of the building.

Good location. Staff were friendly but tended to give incorrect answers rather than just saying they didnt know. Bathroom was cleaned every day but the sleeping area was not cleaned once during my 5 day stay. Breakfast basic.

I stayed there for a long weekend in the middle of September. Location was good, close to Leidseplein, so not short of places for food or drinks. Staff were helpful enough. My room, a single room, was clean, tidy, and the bathroom was the same. There was just a shower there, not a bath, but that's fine for me. I'd recommend it to anyone, it's not 5-star, it's comfortable nonetheless. It's on a quiet street. tram stops are nearby too.

Very central hotel in quite location, good bathroom but very small room. My room was dirty and there was trash by past guest. Bathroom dirty also. They have not clean my room although my demand. Basic breakfast included but 4% of surplus if you pay your stay by credit card. Staff useful.

We stayed the first weekend of September at Alexander in Amsterdam. We had a nice triple room with a balcony. The room was spaceous, clean and the service good. Location is convenient, near everything and on a quiet street. Home like breakfast was great. I really can´t understand if somebody complains about this hotel, of course it is not 5 stars, but if you are looking for a neat place to spend your nights, Alexander is just great.

Stayed for several nights on first visit to Amsterdam. Pubic hair from previous parties in bathroom...not nice. Floor didnt get cleaned once during the entire stay. Breakfast is not worth 2 EURs. Unfriendly service. When addressing with the owner of the hotel we were yelled at. I would avoid this experience.

AVOID!!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND TO STAY IN THIS HOTEL A friend of mine and I stayed for three nights in the Hotel Alexander in June 2006. We booked it in the Internet and relied on the good ratings we found. The hotel location is good, in a quiet street nearby Leidseplein and Vondel Park. First we were offered a very small double bed room. You could hardly turn around in it and there was no space for placing the luggage. We did not accept it and got a two bed room on the backside of the hotel. This room was OK and the bathroom was quite nice. But we were very disappointed about the service in the hotel, we found the personal to be unmotivated and ignorant. Our room and bathroom were not cleaned once in the three days we stayed there. Only the towels were changed. We complained on the second day, but the employee just started asking stupid questions, if we were in the room during the day (how many people would stay in the hotel room when visiting Amsterdam? Ridiculous) and if we had placed the do not disturb label. Both was not the case. He appeared quite ignorant and the room was not cleaned after that either. When checking out we complained again and asked for a compensation for the bad service and the employee at the front desk called the hotel owner. The owner did not give any discount for the bad service and just treated us ignorant complaing about guests that spoil the rooms and so on. Wasted time! Breakfast was basic continental and served until 10:00. But there were not enough eggs or they were boiled hours ago and cold, when we came there a quarter to ten. The employees refused to boil new ones. I expect full service even if I come late, but the employees did not seem to be interested at all in giving us good service. Summary: AVOID!!!! I DO NOT RECOMMEND TO STAY IN THIS HOTEL

Near Vondelpark & the museum area. Quiet location - easy access to trams. 32 room hotel has been newly renovated. Single room small but very comfortable, not cramped - refrigerator in room. Elevator. Good buffet breakfast and helpful staff. My room had a view out on to the pretty tree lined street filled with lovely Amsterdam buildings. This is a very inexpensive hotel - I would certainly stay there again. There is a 5% upcharge for credit card, easier to get cash from ATM nearby.
