Staff was quite efficient and reacted on remarks. When we arrived the room was very smoked up. There still were cigarette butt in the toilet. There is no shower cabin.
+ Fantasticly helpful staff, exceptionaly clean rooms, and a great power shower. reviews we read has said walls were thin and stairs were steep... we did not find this the case, and are pleased to say we had a very enjoyable stay - Location of hotel is very misleading, reality is the park is a 15 minute walk and the "short" tram ride is around 20-25 mins depending on traffic. we were not particualy bothered by the distance. however the hotel should not be advertised in a way that insinuates its very close to the centre, when it simply is not
the hotel is right on the tram line. The room was unbelievably small. No soap in room. No amenities. Management seems cash hungry - a 6% extra fee for paying room bill is added to credit card on top of existing fees.
+ Bed was big and comfy , shower good , good selection of cafes(yours trulys) restaurants(il contro-v good italian retaurant) and bakery very nearby also supermarket nearby , close to vondelpark and tram stop. - No fresh milk available, extra charge for kettle in room.breakfast not great
+ Very kind and helpfull staff - The distance from the centre
+ Great location near vondel park. not too far from centre (unless you get lost like we did), 20 min walk or the tram stop just outside the hotel. - Getting woken up at 9am with someone wanting to clean the room was a bit of a pain. non-smoking.
+ Staff were very welcoming.
+ Very helpful and friendly staff. very good breakfast! - The steps to the rooms are unacceptably steep and you should warn customers before they book. it is very difficult to carry suitcases up to the rooms. or install a lift.
+ Breakfast was good. its in a good location. not too far from the city centre - No
+ I'm glad for my hotel's choice..restfull,calm and clean..
+ They cleaned the room every day. - It was a bit too far from the centre.
- Theres is a mouse :)
+ The staff were very friendly and helpful. rooms were clean. - The location information is a bit misleading as it is further that suggested on the website. the rooms are nice, but the pictures on the website are not exactly what the rooms look like! they are much smaller than on the website.
+ Hotel staff were very helpful and confirmed our booking themselves by email (something that other amsterdam hotels do not always seem to do). hotel was clean and seemed to be well-run. beds were neatly made up and the room was cleaned every day (something else that does not always seem to happen). - Like nearly all amsterdam hotels, the stairs are steep and would not be suitable for elderly or disabled guests. the location is quiet (a plus point) but a long tram ride away from most of the city's attractions (a minus point). there was one complaint from my lady friend about the reaction of the (male) cleaner when he accidentally opened her room door! the only other complaint was against certain other guests who were noisy and rude. very little that a hotel management can do about that!
I have spent 4 night in this hotel, and the first room that I got for two nights was smelly, at 3 floor, and it's not worth the money. But the last two nights I have spent in diferent room, in basement, room number 2, and it was great !! Nice, clean, with yard, and I woud love to return in it, next time I visit A'dam.
+ Cleanliness, quietness, plenty of trams - Breakfast room small, cramped. initial booking says only 4 tram stops 20 mins from central station, in fact on arrival about 8 stops and 40 mins from station,(perhaps arrived wrong time of day).however during stay found trams plentiful and punctual.
+ Two problems. one you cannot cure but should state abd that is the very steep and dangerous stairs. the hot water is scalding and using the shower is dangerous as using the sink taps, produces huge temperature changes in the shower head. not nice.
+ Nice quiet location.
- The only negative thing was that the cleaning staff woke up us every morning at 9 : 30 to clean, not even well, tge bathroom
+ Typical 2-star dutch hotels feature stairs, thinner walls cramped quarters and rudimentary ammenities. this hotel excelled over the others with comparable prices with it's 4-star cleanliness and spacious single room with huge window. even the location is an asset. the peaceful neighborhood with green space, a rare commodity in amsterdam, makes for a great night sleep. between the no. 2 tram outside your door and the adjacent no. 16, you have curb service to explore everywhere conveniently. amsterdam on a budget usually means sacrifices but my stay here was a pleasant surprise. - None
+ Tram stop was not far from the hotel, therefore easy to get to and from the centre. - There are 3 flights of very steep stairs in order to get to the rooms, made it difficult to carry up luggage-no lifts available, picture and description of hotel was very different to actual rooms. description of rooms also highlighted there was a safe in the room available to use-did not mention the deposit you must pay before you can use it. also stated internet available at hotel-again no mention of the charge you must pay before you can use it.
+ The room was so surprisingly big and spacious and the staff were very helpful and friendly - The stairs were quite a mission. but that's all part of the culture.
+ The only negative was that the bed was so soft and i got backache.
+ Helpful staff clean rooms - Decorating going on, havinf to beware of wet paint and walk over plastic sheets. the entrance to the room hidden behind a door that was half open to allow access to other areas. steep stairs.
+ The evening reception clerk was very knowledgeable about the neighborhood and amsterdam and helped me find parking for my car. - The shower is slow to drain and i almost flooded the room.
+ Nice place, staff very friendly, also its very easy to tram or walk from the center, tram is recomended though its further than you think. - Gets a bit cold (in rooms)
+ The hotel service was excellent, the staff were polite. the room was very clean, small, but comfortable.
Good location
What an absolute rip off. We could have stayed in a really good hotel for 135 euros a night. This hotel is so basic, that you can get better hostels for half the price. The room stank of smoke, even though we asked for a non smoking room. The bathroom was tiny, and the hairdryer did not work. The hotel is noisy at night and there are no staff on duty. There is no access to tea and coffee facilities, other than paying out another 15 euros per night to have a kettle put in your room. The staff were pleasant, but couldnt really be bothered to help or assist you in any way.
What a complete rip off. This hotel is really conning its customers. 135 euros a night, then an extra 6% on arrival for paying by visa., which they don't tell you. This hotel is so basic and out of date that you can find better and more comfortable hostels. The details on our confirmation booking form stated " a nice room". Well, we got a room that had black mould around the windows, the room stank of smoke and musky, there are burn holes in the carpet, furniture and bedding. We also found rubbish under one of the beds from the previous guests. The bathrooms are TINY and very dangerous when taking a shower. There is no showewr basin, just the tiled floor. The hairdryer needs two people to operate it ( if it works at all, as ours didn't) The staff are pleasant, but cannot really be bothered to help you or offer you advice. There is no access to tea and coffee, unless you want to pay another 15 euros for the kettle in your room. The hotel is noisy at night, heavy banging doors. There are no staff on duty at night, and although the location is nice it is about 40 mins walk to the centre. The breakfast is basic, but ok food, just a traditional dutch breaky. We will never ever stay here again and wish to lot as many people know what a con this hotel is.
We stayed at the aadam wilhelmina hotel (20th - 23rd Oct 2006). The hotel is situated right on the tram line so it's got easy access to the surrounding areas. The hotel it's self is clean and the staff are helpful and friendly. They offer a traditional dutch breakfast of bread, cheese, ham and juices. The rooms are large and cleaned daily, maybe a bit dated but how much time are you going to spend in your room when theres so much going on!! Overall the hotel is good value for money and would recommend it to others.
I stayed in the Wilhelmina for three nights. I expected a little more luxury for 300 euro but overall it was clean, tidy, great location, smoking allowed, close to tram line back into Central station. The room was small but adequate. We had an ensuite bathroom which was dated but very clean. The room had great big windows to look out over the local area. The staff were unimposing and cleaned room each day. I would go a bit more luxurious the next time but for those looking for a fine hotel , close to the city for less 100 euro a night this will suit you.
I came to amsterdam for a long weekend and I absolutely loved. I'm so shocked to read all these reviews because our experience was nothing close to as desribed. The management is so friendly! They've got a great sense of humour. The rooms were very neat and tidy. The beds were very comfortable, the bed sheets were cleaned everyday. If you request nicely the housekeeping staff are more than willing to clean your room at different time to as when they come. The breakfast was to have after a heavy night of partying. We all loved the location as there was public transport to take you right to the center (6 minutes to reach max.) In all our experience of this hotel was brilliant!! I definately recomend it to any one who asks...
When you book this hotel online, they send you an e-mail informing you that they have earmarked a 'nice' room. There was nothing nice about our stay. All the negative comments about this hotel on TripAdvisor are true (would we have seen them before we booked!). It is musty and dirty. Carpets have seen better days. Our bedspread was stained, sockets didn't work, there were bare wires on lights, and taps were loose. Double beds are composed of two singles pushed together. There were no curtains on bathroom windows, no toiletries (not even bars of soap, just liquid soap dispensers), the stairs were treacherously steep, and the breakfast mediocre. All this for 160 Euros a night! The management are extremely arrogant and rude and make no secret of the fact that money is the prime concern. Payment is demanded upfront within minutes of arrival and if you want to use a credit card they whack you for 6 percent surcharge. Despite the high cost of the rooms, they charge 20 Euros per night for a kettle/tea/coffee and also ask 20 Euros as deposit for the plastic keys. When we asked to see the room as a courtesy before we paid, we were told that even if we didn't like it we would still have to pay for the nights reserved as the hotel had our credit card details. We had booked online for 4 nights and stuck it for 2. Early morning on the third day, we were greeted by the sight of a mouse helping himself to the sugar next to the bed. Far from being concerned, the manager said no one had ever complained about vermin before and expressed scepticism of our complaint. After an unpleasant argument, we left and we were refused any kind of refund. We booked via the helpful Tourist Info Office 2 nights at the Hotel Torens in central Amsterdam, which was very expensive (compounded by the lack of refund). But at least the quality of the hotel and the courtesy of the staff helped wash away the memory of the Wilhemina. The first thing we did was have a shower! This hotel is seriously bad news and should, in our view, be removed from travel websites. I've personally never experienced anything like it.
THe hotel is excellent situated. The rooms clean and spacious. The service was super. Breakfast plentyfull and delicious.
We stayed at the Aadam Wilhemina in April 2006. Our first impression upon entering was the musty smell. We had asked for a non-smoking room and assumed we would get one as we had not been advised otherwise, however all rooms are smoking and it was too late. The room itself smelled very strongly of smoke and the bedspread had multiple burn marks. The smell of smoke on the blankets is intolerable to a non-smoker. I must admit the sheets were changed every day but sometimes they were so old and threadbare they actually had holes in them. We booked a double room and are aware that you can sometimes get two singles pushed together, which is what we got this time, but we also had two sets of single bed sheets! Not conducive to a good night’s sleep!. The room itself (room 6) was dull, small and very much in need of decoration. The bathroom looked clean but for the first couple of days smelled of urine (presumably the floor was washed on the third day). The only extra, the hair dryer (fixed dangerously in a steamy bathroom with no window or ventilation) needed a second person to permanently stand with their finger on the button before it would work, so be sure to take a patient partner if you want to dry your hair! And as petty as it may seem for the price we paid I would at least expect a bath mat or a even hand towel. Breakfast…. The food was fresh and plentiful on four of the five days. However, the breakfast room was also the reception and consequently space was very limited; if you were unlucky enough to get a seat with your back to the aisle then you had people continuously pushing past. The staff were polite to us (but we did hear the receptionist refer to someone as a stupid [--]. We were allowed to leave our bags when we arrived very early and before our room was ready and also for a few hours after checking out until our late flight was due, so that was helpful. The hotel is on the tram route to all the major attractions but is a good 25 minute walk to the outskirts of the centre and perhaps an hour or so to the central station; too far really to walk every day into the centre itself, which we felt necessary because of the lack of bars and restaurants close by. Definitely not a place we would ever return to, perhaps the kind of place you might expect to use as a teenager on a low budget. But we think that for what the hotel offered the price was exorbitant and feel that we did not receive good value for money.
What an awful hotel !!!! The rooms shown in their advertisement are not the same rooms they give you. They are probably of another hotel for all I know. The payment terms quoted on booking websites are completely different from what they ask you for. You can only pay cash unless you're prepared to pay an unbelievably expensive 6% credit card charge. The staff at this hotel would have to be some of the most unhelpful, rude and arrogent people I've ever met. They are especially rude and unhelpful if you are travelling alone. They are incredibly rude and treat any enquiry as an offence or personal which is astonishing. They need to go back to school on customer relations. My advice, avoid this hotel at all costs. It is overrated and overpriced and with the choice around, you could do far better. Avoid.
My friend and I found this to be a very comfortable budget hotel. The staff was always helpful and friendly. We liked the fact that it was right on the tram line. We could be in the town center in minutes without paying town center prices. It also gave me the sudden urge to visit Greece.
beware the hotel ripped off my credit card even though I cancelled withing 10 days.hotel location too far away from the center, also have reported them to my bank and hotel booking line BEWARE
We took a three-night stay in a double room at this excellent hotel in late January 2006 and found it to be totally different to the three reviews already posted. It was very good value for money, adjacent to the No. 2 tram route which gets you to and from the centre of Amsterdam briskly, cheaply and safely. In fact, so conveniently was it situated that we never actually took the tram to the city centre in the mornings, but only used it for travelling back at night! Travellers who must have a lift/elevator should perhaps not go there if using a minimal amount of effort is a problem, although we had to climb two sets of stairs to our room and only found the turn at the top of the second flight of stairs a bit of a challenge with narrow steps, but overseas visitors might like to consider that the traditional narrow but tall configuration of Dutch buildings makes this necessary. The able-bodied should NOT find it a challenge. The bed was fine, as was the cleanliness of the room, the bathroom, and the breakfast area. The proprietors were friendly, and we shall certainly be going back there again, not least because the standard of clientele (at least when we were there) meant that there was no noise during the night, which is worth a lot!
The hotel was dark, dusty and smelly, the rooms were too small the bathroom did not even have mats to step on, the bedcovers were dirty and torn and we didnt even feel like touching them. It is terrible the hotel makes you pay upfront so you are stuck with a terrible hole. The steps were steep and there was no elevator to help with luggage. It totally messed up our vacation
Just got back from Amsterdam which is an amazing city, but this hotel is far too way out, and this hotel does not show any sign of recently being refurbed has stated on their web site, it took us 45 mins walk in to town or we had to spend loads on trams. Breakfast was nothing more than cereals and a sandwich. Rooms were clean but very basic. However our bathroom which consisted of toilet, sink and shower were spotlessly clean. Very budget price hotel, ok for students, certainly not for families. Was very dissapointed in location, to way out for my liking. But next shall choose a different hotel like the Acro or Prinsen which are both good hotels.
The room we stayed in in early July wasn't anything to write home about.I didn't see any 'newly renovated' rooms. The double we stayed in was small no a-c.Very hot and everything smelled of smoke. We had requested a non smoking room but there are none.To get to the room we were in we had to climb an almost vertical narrow stairwell. We were not impressed with this over-priced hotel.
I booked this hotel, but there was confusion with the booking agents, who told me my room had been cancelled. I was then deducted the full amount from my bank account and the hotel has been very inflexible in terms of accepting there was a genuine mix up and wouldn't even acknowledge the problems they have liasing with their booking agents. They were arrogant and rude. Be careful.
This is a hotel with basic but good, clean facilities. The staff were friendly and helpful both when booking and while staying at the hotel. Breakfast was a simple traditional cold buffett that made a good starter for the days exporing. Being only about 75 metres from the tram stop this hotel is an ideal base to explore Amsterdam and at a price far less than a city centre hotel.
An excellent Two star hotel - should actually be a three star. Friendly star, super rooms and great room rates. Breakfast is a good spread buffet.
The hotel was a diaster, we did not get what we paid for. I was taken awa for a suprise weekend for my birthday and it was more of a dissapointment for him who book the hotel. We had what looked like a double bed, but underneath the top cover was two single bed with singe sheets. The reception area and the 'eating area' are in the same small room. Needlesss to say we did not eat there, even though the only thing you can get is breakfast. The bathroom was clean, but there was no curtain on the bathroom window and the toilet and window are beside each other, people can easily see. The shower was also a diaster, the bathroom flooded very easily and we both got scalded the water was scarily hot. And if you have a heart problem its a defintae no no. The stairs are like a ladder, basicaly straight up with small steps. So we stayed out of the so called hotel as much as possible and enjoyed the city, though it is a good 20-25 mins walk! I would not reccommend this hotel to anyone. Very overpriced
