The Deux Magot, the Café de Flore and the Brasserie Lipp are clustered close to the intersection of St Germain des Prés and Rue Bonaparte, near the hotel.
During the period when intellectualism reigned supreme in St.
Germain, Jean Paul Sartre, Albert Camus and Francois Mitterand frequented these eateries that continue to serve patrons today.
Located a few blocks west of the cafés is Le Procope, a favorite haunt of Napoléon.
It is here that Voltaire supposedly downed 40 cups of coffee a day.
+ The hotel is in a perfect location, lots of bars and eating places within easy walk, and easy walk to tourist sites if you are happy to casually walk. the lounge area is nice, and breakfast nice despite the price. - I stayed in the suite. the jacuzzy is not the cleanest, and the finish on the bathroom let it down. there was an extra bed, which did not need to be there. the room was cleaned everyday but not to a high standard, ie the mini bar was not topped up, dressing table not wiped up. previously stayed at etoile 4 star, smaller room but free breaky and much better standard for the similar price.
For short stay in Paris ideal situation. Wallking distance to St. Germain shopping (quality shops) and restaurants etc. also to the Louvre, Tuileries, Musee d'Orsay etc. In fact we were able to walk right into the city Boulevard Hausmann, Opera etc etc with relative ease. Staff very accommodating, friendly, polite. Rooms ok, but we had a deluxe each, (single travellers) and would not have wanted to be with partner in such a small area. Dont know what the standards would be like. Although rather cramped it was clean and nicely decorated. Bathrooms could do with a bit of an upgrade. Suggest anyone staying longer or with partner book the suite. 407,507 107. I had a side room and was not at all disturbed by traffic noise, however a friend had a room on the front and said it was rather noisy. Another had room on top floor - again adequate. There is a lift. Breakfast was in the cellar area restaurant. Ok breakfast, nothing to get excited about, but there are loads of small cafes etc. nearby if not satisfied or required more variety. We found it fine. Plenty of tea, coffee etc. the usual quick buffet continental but thought E14 a bit excessive. Overall would and indeed have recommend this hotel.

After reading the other reviews I believe this hotel tries to make more money by saying that their standard rooms are "sold out" upon arrival, put you in a suite and then ask if you want to stay in that suite for additional $euros per night, as that is exactly what happened with me and my travel companion upon our arrival. We declined and moved to our room that was booked for the next 2 nights but in hindsight should have stayed in the larger suite. If this happens to you I would suggest paying extra to enjoy the extra space and cleanliness - our room was tiny and not very clean! The bathtub was rather unsightly with black mould on the walls and a film on the tub which you could feel with your bare feet. Gross! The hallways had a rather unpleasant odour as well. The location of this hotel was great but for the money I would rather stay elsewhere.

We booked this though Travelocity and got a really good deal. I was worried that it couldnt be as nice as it looked online but it definitely lived up to expectations! We wanted a typically French looking quirky hotel and thats exactly what we got :) We were offered a bigger room when we checked in and instantly given keys to 2 rooms; the first was the small basic room and it really was very basic, tiny room, small bed and very dark! The second room however was lovely; a bit bigger, bath & shower, 2 windows and lovely French furniture, all for an extra 20 Euros a night which we snapped up! The only negative we could find was the breakfast charge 14 Euros each; we only had breakfast here once as we prefer to eat out in the morning. The staff were very helpful when it came to recommending and booking a restaurant for us on a Saturday night; Le Petit Zinc and it was wonderful! I will definitely stay here again...

I spent New Years in Paris with my husband and 3 grown children, ages 22, 21 and 17. This small hotel was in a perfect location for everything we wanted to see. The Louvre is at the end of the street, a 5 minute walk, another 15 minutes to Notre Dame,30 minutes to the Eiffel Tower and Champs d'Elyssee. It is in an area of superb shopping and great restaurants with wonderful old streets. The hotel is small and needs painting in the hallways but the rooms were pleasant and comfortable with nice bathrooms. The halls are very narrow so you can hear everyone coming and going...not great for early to bed people. The front desk staff were friendly with good English skills. We walked everywhere and found this hotel very central. We would stay there again.

Compare to my previous experiences, I have to recognize that the Academie hotel is very quiet and beneficiates a wonderful location (bars, restaurants, art galleries, museums, shopping…). You are just one step from everything. The room size is not so bad regarding same category hotels in Saint Germain des prés. Anyway, that’s not the main matter when your are in PARIS! Enjoy it!

excellent location, everthing as expected for hotel rating, reception very helpful, spoke english and booked restaurants etc for us. Booked upgraded room and didn't see standard room or eat in hotel so unable to comment on these. Many places to eat within short distance and most tourists sites walkable. The hotel is opposite the med school so is quiet at night.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights April 07. We upgraded to a Junior Suite after realising how small the standard room was - tiny with no room to even put your suitcase. You just could not stay in one of these rooms!! The suite was spacious 7 well decorated. Air con was good and the room was clean & tidy. The staff were always helpful and happy. Breakfast was a bit dodgy and expensive for what is was - just grab a croissant from the bakery next door. Great location, just a few minutes walk from the metro. Overall nice hotel if you upgrade to a Junior Suite but consider how much this will costs as it it could work out cheaper booking a decent 4 star hotel

Even by Parisian standards the staff at this hotel are rude and totally incompetent. We were actually shouted at by the concierge for coming back at 3am even though we had not made a sound. On another occasion we asked for an iron and ironing board only to be told that they did not posses a functioning one in the whole hotel. When we booked online we specifically asked for smoking rooms. When we checked in we were informed that there was a 20 euro ‘smoking charge’. When we checked out we were told this was 20 euros per day! Every time we phoned reception to ask for anything we had follow this up with several other calls. The rooms are very worn even though ourselves and another couple we were staying in two of the most expensive they had. We were told our room had a Jacuzzi in it only to find it was a bog standard bath with a pathetic little jet in it. The only good thing about this hotel is its location (wonderful part of the city) but when you see how cheap and fast the Metro is geography becomes much less of an advantage. My advice would be to stay somewhere with better value but near a Metro station.

We arrived looking forward to our stay only to be told that our room was not available and we had been put in a junior suite. I know it sounds good ,but the next day we were asked for an additional 60 euros or we would have to move to a much smaller room (even though we had booked deluxe!). We paid but I think this is something the hotel does to exact extra money - be warned!!! Also DON'T take the 'free' breakfast which we were offered for the inconvenience - you will be charged!

Location great but room was very small. The night we got in they immediately said that the standard room was not available and would we like to upgrade. I thought it was a gimic so refused but perhaps should have because they moved us to a tiny room the remainder of our evenings. We did not take the breakfast at 22 euro because as you walk out and turn right there is a brasserie on the corner and a patisserie right before it. We loved St Germain area. A computer is available in the sitting room downstairs which was nice. Staff were knowledgeable. Took the yellow van to and from airport which was very reliable. Have fun!!!

The hotel website claims that the rooms were "recently renovated". It was with surprise that I entered room 505 to find worn out carpets with holes, a dilapidated desk, dusty net curtains, and a dirty bathtub with a shower hose having black mold on it. Also the in-room safe would not work so they had to give me the Master Key to the safe which allows the holder to by-pass the combination. When I asked about the so called recent renovation mentioned on the hotel website, the receptionist seriously answered that it was performed 5 years ago. Room 505 is a Junior Suite which is more expensive but not bigger than a standard room at the Intercontinental, except that the Intercontinental is more luxurious.

This hotel is in an excellent location, just off St Germain Blvd where there are plenty of shops, bars & restaurants. Its a 5 minute walk to the Louvre & around 10 to the Champs-Elysées, & 15 to Notre Dame. The hotel itself is an old Parisain building and very charming. We had booked to stay here for 3 nights but when we arrived the manager said there had been a leak and we would have to spend our 1st night in their sister hotel, they paid for the return taxis & upgraded us free of charge to the executive suite, room 102., we didnt mind. Although Im sure there wasnt a leak, they had just overbooked. The room had a jacuzzi which I think is the only difference between it & the other rooms, it may have been slightly larger too. The hotel is clean, decorated in keeping with the period of the building and has nice original beams etc. All in all it was a nice hotel in a good location and I would stay there again.

We stayed here for our first anniversary (honeymoon). It is in the ideal location! walking distance to the Louvre, Notre Dame (bit of a walk), and to lots of great cafes and shopping. Our room was a good size and the bathroom was huge (jet tub too). We read alot of reviews and chose this hotel because a friend recommended it. I don't think we would stay here again (actually for our return visit we stayed in Versailles and took the train in- quarter the cost) The only complaints we have is the walls are super thin...I think our neighbor had food poisoning...ick. And we were disappointed with the breakfast "buffet".

We stayed at the Hotel de l'Academie from October 12-15 2006. When we arrived we were offered an upgrade to a Junior Suite for 30 Euros a night. It was worth it if just for the whirlpool tub for our aching feet. The hotel is walking distance to d’Orsay and the Louvre, and the metro stop at St. Germain-des Pres. Many great restaurants are nearby. Staff was very helpful. Breakfast was very good. Best chocolate shop in Paris (Debauve & Gallas) is right next door. This is a great place to stay.

One problem with on-line reviews from former patrons is that you do not know from what personal standard they are judging a hotel in question. I have been to Paris about 30 times and have stayed in many different hotels ranging from 2 to 4.5 stars. Thus, I feel I have the requisite experience to judge a Paris hotel from a wide ranging prospective. To state my review succinctly, the Academie Hotel Saint Germain is unacceptable. The Academie Hotel Saint Germain makes a Motel 6 seem like a Ritz Carlton. It is the equivalent to a 1 star U.S. hotel. I would estimate the hotel has not been renovated for at least 30 years. You arrive at the hotel at 32 rue des Saints-Pères to be greeted by a vertical sign reading simply, “Hotel”. This is always a bad first sign. It translates into “we are too cheap to purchase a custom sign with our name on it.” You lug your bags up a few steps into a drab and dreary lobby. The painted areas are the color of the inside of government buildings, a sort of light blue-green. The paint, as well as the drapery and everything else is worn and soiled. The elevator is about the size of a telephone booth takes you to the floor of your room. Upon opening the door a quick inspection will reveal nothing less than a horror show. Here is where I need to stop once again and differentiate between different people’s view of “cleanliness”. To some, clean means the bed has been made, there is no litter left in the room and the surfaces have been wiped or vacuumed. To me, cleanliness goes farther. To be “clean” a room must be free from soiled drapery and carpeting. The bedding, not just the sheets and pillow cases, must be clean and fresh. The cracks and crevices must be free of grim and debris. The porcelain and fixtures should sparkle. To this end, you will be met with extremely disappointment and most likely, disgust. Here is my experience: Upon entering the room, I found the base board was separating from the wall, apparently from the result of either water damage or severe neglect. The paint was soiled and chipped. The drapery was worn and soiled. The crevices in the hardwood floor were black with dirt. The worst was the bed. The comforter was limp with use. It was covered with dark stains too numerous to count. The blanket was equally soiled. It was a bed I would never sleep in and didn’t. I left the hotel without staying a night.

The location is great, I will choose St Germain des pres again for my next visit to Paris. AS for the hotel, we had a reservation for three nights on the academie. We arrived late on the first day and they had given away our room! They sent us to another hotel, wich was nice, but in Trocadero, wich is not a very convenient. They did pay for the taxis, but still was very unpleaseant to have to move after a long trip to get there. And if I hadn't shown up they would have stil charged me with the night, so they had no reason to give away the room. At the next day we decided to go back since st germain was the location we wanted for our stay in Paris. The room was kind of ok, but they furniture was pretty worn off. At the third day there was no hot water!!!!

We have just returned from a week in Paris and our stay at the Hotel de l'Academie. We will gladly return there on future trips as we found it to be an excellent facility in an excellent location. We stayed in a Junior Suite, room 504, on the top floor. The room, while not large by American standards, was very comfortable for two people. The bath was well appointed as well. The room was very quiet for our entire seven day stay. We had booked a Junior Suite and upon arrival we were given a Junior Suite on the first floor which was a nice room but the air conditioning was not working. We were quickly given another room, 504, without any hesitation or problem. The staff was friendly all during our week stay and very accommodating and helpful. The buffet breakfast in the morning seems, at first, expensive at 14.50 euros however as you become familiar with the restaurants in the area you will find it becomes a much better deal. Of course if breakfast is a croissant and coffee then you can do better elsewhere. The location of this hotel is truly outstanding. You are within an easy walk of the Louvre, three metro stations, three of the most famous restaurants in Paris, the lovely Saint Germain section of Paris, fabulous antique stores, the River Seine, Bon Marche and upscale clothing stores. ATM's are plentiful, there is a nearby Post Office and an adjacent Police Station for the unfortunate few. Internet service is available for a fee in the lobby and also in your room via high speed wireless connection, also for a fee. The fee is 10 euros per 24 hour day for room connection. While this hotel is not a four star hotel, it is certainly worthy of its three star rating. There is a small elevator, adequate for two people just off the lobby. Dealing directly with the hotel gets the best rate for your stay. The Junior Suites have a small refrigerator which, given the price of drinks on the street, is a very handy thing to have. There is a small supermarket not far from the Hotel for those wishing to add drinks or fromage to their room refrigerator. Three doors up there is a small pastry shop which sells sandwiches, drinks, pastries, salads, pizza slices, etc. for when you want a quick and inexpensive meal in the room. The Hotel de l'Academie is an excellent value in an unbeatable location.

Initial room received upon checkin was missing light bulbs throughout the room. The room was very dated and worn and did not appear extremely clean. Not at all acceptable. The mini bar (fridge) door was broken and would not stay shut. It was wide open and was unplugged upon our arrival. Room did not meet expectations and was not acceptable. I wouldn't have stayed in it for even one night. Upon discussion with the front desk, we were offered a Jr. Suite which was more updated with a nice bathroom. There was an incremental approx. 30 Euro charge per night for this room improvement. Location is great and lobby area is very nice.
There is no doubt that the location of the hotel is excellent & convenient for virtually all main attractions. It is also fairly quiet (especially on the rue St. Peres side). Staff were very friendly & breakfast was adequate and no waiting (but a few tomatoes or grapes would have been a nice touch). The biggest drawback was the room size - we had a standard double and the wardrobe hanging space was ridiculously limited for anything over a 2 night stay (we had 4 nights). We heard American residents also talking about the room size, so if you consider this hotel, definitely think about a room upgrade, otherwise - no complaints. footnote: there are civil works outside on the pavement at the moment (June/06), but there is no noise to worry about, you just need to be careful walking along the pavement which is a bit of a mess at the moment.
This was my first trip Paris…to France in fact for my husband and I. The Hotel Academie is in a great location centered around most of the major attractions. A lot of cafes nearby like Café de Flore and les Deux Magots. The people there were very pleasant and helpful. We were in a double deluxe room with a king bed for two people. The room was newly renovated with beautiful colours. We were on the Saint Peres street side of the hotel and thanks to the double windows we have not been disturbed. In fact, this hotel is located in a quiet area. We had a full bathtub with shower. The maids kept the room clean. We did have breakfast and it was wonderful : a full buffet breakfast with the famous croissants, pains au chocolat French bread… There were no surprises on the bill when we checked out. I read some of the negative comments about the Hotel before we reserved a room and after staying there I think they were unfair. For sure, I will recommend the hotel Academie to my friends. We had a great stay and the people there were wonderful.

After reading some reviews of this hotel, we decided to stay at the Academie hotel here for our first visit to Paris. I strongly recommend this hotel for those looking for a quiet, romantic hotel in a great neighbourhood. They have the best promotion on their website [--]. The metro station and many buses are nearby and there are many shops and restaurants in the vicinity. The rooms are cleaned twice a day. The service level is very good. The staff can not be so helpful!. Of course the standard room is the cheapest, and it is not the biggest. But it is PARIS. After checking other hotels around, the size of the rooms are more than ok!. Our friends who were very disappointed by the hotel Danube decided to finish their stay with us at the Academie and were so satisfied that they will be back there..

My husband and I just returned from a 7 night stay at Hotel de l'Academie and can give a very positive report. We saw three different junior suites and thought they were all charming. The room photo on their website is quite representative of the junior suite. The location is great -- several blocks walk to a metro station (St. Germain), the Louvre and Musee d'Orsay are each about a 15 minute walk away, it's a few blocks from two famous cafes (Les Deux Magots and Cafe de Flore) and about a 10 minute walk to the Seine and a batobus stop. Our bed was comfortable (good size - two individual beds put together into one), there were two comfortable chairs with a small round table, and a large desk. The tv in the room was a good size. The bathroom was excellent, with white and grey marble tile, a whirlpool tub -- which was great after a long day out sightseeing. The bathroom has lots of shelf area around the tub for all your bath and hair products and there's plenty of room around the sink area as well. Within the bathroom, the toilet area has a privacy door. The staff was very helpful and made several dinner reservations for us. Our room was clean and in good condition. We were initially given Jr. Suite #107, which was an attractive room. We spent one night in it and found the lighting was not good for reading, which we both like to do in the evening. (small lamps and you couldn't remove the shade to get more light). The next morning we asked if we could see any other jr. suites they had and were able to look at two more. The first had similar lighting. But Room 307 had ceiling spotlights in addition to the small lamps and we switched to 307, which we thought had more classic Paris charm and much better lighting. All 3 jr. suites we looked at were at the back of the hotel and had windows that looked out onto no view, but were very quiet. I can't recall anytime during our week's stay that we were disturbed by any noise. All in all, we had a very nice stay. I have heard the standard rooms are small, but we only saw junior suites.

My husband and I were very satisfied by ACADEMIE HOTEL. We will definitely be back and are pleased to recommend it.. I was researching for hotels in Paris and finally decided to book the ACADEMIE. It is located just one step from the Louvre, in the fantastic area of Saint Germain des Pres. There were so many little cafe's, great restaurants and high end designer shops nearby. We enjoyed the location very much. Even though we read every review, we were stunned when we walked into a so cosy room. Everything wonderful everyone has written is true! The hotel is modern (good air conditioning, free Wifi hight speed in all room, and free internet access in the lobby), very clean (cleaning twice a day like in a 4-stars!!) and the staff is very helpful. You will not be disappointed with your stay at the ACADEMIE HOTEL.

We are used to come many times a year in Paris. The ACADEMIE HOTEL is our favourite. We should give you some tips. The price of this hotel is very reasonable comparing to the other 3 star hotels. The best deals are on their official website. No commission, no deposit no reservation fees!. (Be careful, some website who takes 15% deposit are not official as they pretend…). The service is excellent: rooms are cleaned twice a day (morning & afternoon) as in a 4 stars hotel, rooms are cosy, comfortable and the staff very efficient & helpful. The location is just Great and very safe. For new clients if you've booked a standard room, you may know that in historical area as Saint-Germain-des-Pres, the room will seem quiet small. But it is the Parisian standards and you will not find big size room except in some “bad” area. Have fun as we had at Academie Hotel.

The ACADEMIE HOTEL is a charming boutique hotel located on the 'Rive Gauche' in Saint Germain des Prés. The air conditioned system is very good and our room was recently renovated. The central location of the hotel is a perfect launching point to explore the French capital. Free WIFI high speed internet access in all rooms; Internet workstation in lobby. The staff is very nice and helpful. I recommend the place end I will be back for sure.

We stayed in Academie Hotel for 3 nights (Room 105) April 06. The location is perfect, only steps away from boulevard St Germain and few minutes walk away from Seine and Musee d'Orsay. Saint Germain De Pres is a very safe friendly area. There are lots of bars and restaurants within a 5 minute walk. Metro is also about 5 Minutes walk. Having stayed in Paris a few times, I can quite honestly say, don't expect large rooms. Our room (105 - standard room) in the Academie Hotel was normal size for Paris (small in otherwords). The room had recently been decorated and was clean and tidy. The bathroom had a small shower but it worked very well. The view was of a road but I was in a city after all! All in all we were happy with the room provided. I can't comment on the other size rooms though. If you want a base that is central to all the tourist hotspots, I must say this is the hotel for you.
Last January, I had the pleasure to stay at the Academie Hotel which was both comfortable and luxurious. It is a short walk to the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay. The most useful underground line is a few minutes away. We absolutely loved everything about this Hotel from the service to the atmosphere. The rooms were nicely decorated and very clean. We will highly recommend it to all our friends !

Finished off European holiday with 2 nights at L'Academie. What a shame! Pros - great location - lots of galleries, antique stores, bars & bistros within easy walk. That's about it. Cons - upgraded us from a deluxe room to a junior suite for 25 euro more per night. What a con job and what a shambles! Ceiling tiles falling down over loo - hello upstairs. Stains from god-knows-what all over carpets. Refrig miscellaneously stocked with one or two things you got the feeling previous guests just left. We are talking no frills. We had room 407 with a lovely view of a...dirty building (and this is a suite!) Bathroom in marble - obviously redone complete with jacuzzi tub - but just ok - and don't forget about half the ceiling falling over the loo. Walls paper thin - can deal with this, but you get the feeling small families are living in each room. Lift - its a one-seater - two people inhaling at best. Common areas - lobby/lounge sooo bare. One staff behind desk double dutying as receptionist/cashier/concierge/bar tender. NOT GOOD. Some very charming looking hotels in the area, however. For my money - spend a little more to stay in a Paris hotel. We will definitely stay on the left bank, but will steer clear of L'Academie.

This is a very nice hotel in a great area, Saint-Germain-des-pres. In the heart of action, business and surrounded by excellent restaurants. Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Breakfast buffet is complete and excellent. On my next business trip to Paris that’s the place I will stay.

I stayed 7 nights at the Hotel de l'Academie and really enjoyed it. The management and the staff were nice, the breakfast room was spacious and comfortable. And my room was beautiful and very quiet. I will definitely recommend this hotel to all of my friends !!

Its very difficult to find a nice hotel in Paris but we would definitely return here and recommend it. Rooms and hotel in general are very nicely appointed and very clean. Great location near many metro stations, very central (few minutes from Louvre & Orsay Museums, River, many boutiques, restaurants, cafes…). I will definitely be back and recommend it!.
My stay at Hotel de l'Academie could not have been more plesant. The room was cozy and comfortable, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The central location of the hotel was also wonderful, making it easy to walk to most of the more popular spots in Paris. I felt very welcome in the hotel, and I highly recommend it.

This Hotel was in an excellent location in Saint- Germain-des-pres metro station. The area is surrounded by numerous cafes and bars and is bustling with life. The Hotel itself was really nice. The staff were extremely friendly and the rooms were very cosy, clean and comfortable. I would strongly recommend this Hotel and would have no hesitation in returning in the future.

Forget the big hotel chain; instead of big-business splash, opt for the fairy tale enchantment of the Academie Hotel. This tiny, elegant boutique hotel is the very definition of Parisian romance...secluded off the immaculate Bld st Germain in the heart of the colourful left bank. The staff, too, is gracious ....these folks are all smiles and efficiency. My partner and I spent New Year's 2005 in this small mention, and had a consistently wonderful time. The Concierge was helpful with restaurant reservations, taxis, shopping, and other services.

We have stayed in Academie Hotel for 4 nights october 2005, during our first visit to Paris. The hotel is very nice, compared to the photos on the web site. The room room size was normal for Paris. Location is perfect, only steps away from boulevard St Germain and few minutes walk away from Seine and Musee d'Orsay. The staff was kind and helpful. we will stay again at academie hotel when we visit Paris next time
Just came back from a few days in Paris - the Hotel Academie Saint Germain de Pres was just terrific. Wonderful location, clean, lovely room. Typically European in that it wasn't huge and modern, but it was just perfect. Also, the people who worked there couldn't have been more accomodating. I highly recommend it.

We went in Feb. 2003. I gave it an above average rating because you can't beat the price for the location, and the staff was rather nice too. But yeah, it's definitely a 3-star place. Everything is in walking distance - the Louvre, the cafes, and the fabulous chocolate shop downstairs. Across the street is a fantastic Italian restaurant. Yes, the rooms are miniscule -- you barely have enough room to turn around. And the ceiling seems kind of low too. It's like staying in a matchbox. But my husband and I only slept here -- we spent the rest of the time exploring. If you are going to Paris on a budget, you can't beat this place. It was clean when we went. The service was good, too. And if you have a sense of humor, the size of the room and its decor will give you a good laugh. If you're looking for luxury, stay at the George V. If you're looking for a safe, clean, and hospitable stay in a good area and don't want to spend a lot of money, stay here.

We stayed at the academie for 3 nights in room 305. From the floorplans provided the '05 rooms were the smallest on each floor but we found the space provided perfectly adequate. At any rate, any deficiencies in size were made up for by the fact that our room was pretty, airy, comfortable and clean. The appearance of our room closely matched the pictures on the academie's own website with a laminate floor, antiquey mirror and drawers and pretty, flower patterned bed linen. The air conditioning system also deserves a sepcial mention as throughout our sweltering visit we were never too hot in out bedroom. The bathroom, although admittedly rather tiny was clean and well stocked and the service we recieved was pleasant if unremarkable. A few negative points: As others have commented, the rooms are small and the bathroom in particular was very petite. I had no problems with the shower cubicle but my boyfriend did find it a bit restrictive and if you are particularly tall I would advise booking one of the bigger rooms. Some of the furniture, although full of character, is slightly wornand the bedroom walls are rather thin so you can hear some of the comings and goings of other hotel guests. In general however, this was a lovely hotel and we experienced none of the problems others have mentioned. The location is perfect, and street noise was no problem for us as with the excellent air conditioning the bedroom window can be closed at night anyway. Our room was a real delight and we looked forwards to going back there after a hard days sight seeing. The public areas of the hotel were clean and attractive and we would definitely stay there again during a return trip to Paris.

This was a really nice hotel and good value. Rooms were not huge, but certainly adequate and clean. Bathrooms were clean and decent-sized. Both bathroom and bedroom were quite bright with large windows overlooking the street. Noise was not a problem during the sweltering heat because of double-glazing and the great air-conditioning system. Beds were comfortable. The staff was unbelievably hospitable and helpful. I would definitely stay here again given the great location at this price. I highly recommend it.

The rooms in the Hotel de 'l Academie are small, even by Paris standards, but we found the entire hotel very charming, very clean, and EXTRAORDINARILY accommodating and helpful. After we checked out, the Hotel de 'l Academie allowed us to leave our luggage all day until very late at night with absolutely no attitude. When we returned, in the middle of a fierce rainstorm, the kind gentleman at the desk, negotiated a special night rate (20 euro off) for a taxi directly to Orly airport on our behalf. This man talked with us for a half hour all about America and his love for Americans. The people who resent the service here must come in with a silver spoon sense of entitlement... Out of all six hotels we stayed at in Paris, the Hotel de 'l Academie had the BEST service--not the worst.
My wife and I stayed here in March of 2003. The room was very small, in fact the bathroom was almost as big as the bedroom. The room was clean and the desk help very helpful. The location is what makes this Hotel. When we go to Paris again, we would stay in the same area, but definitely a different Hotel. Internet access in the lobby was very convenient. I wish we had checked TripAdvisor before we booked. We are going to Rome this year and TripAdvisor has been very helpful in helping us find a room.

I wish that I had read previous Trip Advisor reviews before I had booked. Everyone's review on Trip Advisor had the same comments that we experienced - very well worn room and smelly, needs new paint job and bathroom tiles. We had a double deluxe room - had to rearrange furniture to even close the bathroom door, no toilet paper supplied on 2 separate days, nasty extra blankets not even folded but shoved in closet, couldn't even open closet fully due to furniture in way, night tables about to fall apart (didn't even have a bottom in its drawers). If room is on the busy street, it will be noisy (rue de Saints Peres is a busy two-lane street). I was "sold" on the Internet photos and the price, but this place had no charming aspects to it. Truly a budget hotel in one of the great locations on Left Bank. We paid avg of $175 incl tax per night for 6 nights. I would pay more for a better quality hotel in this area. I would not go back to this hotel again.
There wasn't anything wrong with the hotel except that the rooms were small. Rates this hotel as a 3 star hotel and it's a 3 star hotel in the European standards. But in the US it is like a 2 star hotel Overall the stay and price were good.
Excellent price and great hotel.
In the years until about 1991 we stayed in this "lovely" inn every year for the French agricultural fair and came back because of the great service etc.....well I realise the time span is great but our first trip in years and last trip in 2004 was a disaster. Overbooked for the first night so they sent us to their dependance out no-where in the middle of the night (late arrival at 10pm - which was noted there also), then the next morning out early because business associates were arriving early, the rooms both not finished, then finally the rooms - cold, mold in the bathrooms, dirty linens, safe not working, the bath in one room not working....need I say more ? When one is staying in an older city like Paris you do make exceptions for smaller rooms or even the famous rude receptions but....

Stayed Dec. 26th - Dec 31st 2004 To start off, the pictures on the web are deceiving. I have been to Europe many times and I know what to expect from European hotels. The hotel furnishings are ran down and a bit dirty. We had a toilet that was hard to flush and had trouble with the five nights we stayed. After the room was cleaned we were left one towel and sheets not changed, not toilet paper, no klenex and the cleaning staff smelt very bad with B.O. The man on duty that night (George), was informed of the problems. Everything was fixed but the toilet. He had very insulting comments about Americans, our money, and President George Bush! The only nice person thre was Rida. We should have went somewhere else to stay! We did not eat the breakfast! We would not stay their again nor at any of the sister hotels!!!!! This place was so poor if I told you everything that happened there it would not be printed.

Arrived to find our room, the junior suite (the only room advised booking in this hotel) had been booked out to the previous occupants who decided to stay a bit longer. Were given a standard room which was extremely small. No discount, no apologies, no nothing. So extremely dissapointed and upset by the treatment we were given. Recommend you do not stay in this hotel.
Stayed here in October. I'd echo a lot of what has been said, smallish rooms, sketchy carpets, tax charge even though supposedly inclusive. Location is good. I did not try the food. You get what you pay for and not a Euro more. We did switch rooms and if you have the chance I'd ask to see a choice. There is a lot of variation in size, location and condition. Street is busy so stay at least on the 3rd floor or off the front or it will be noisy. For a 3-Star it seems there may be better choices further toward the Latin Quarter. Where perhaps you get a bit more than you pay for. Which is admittedly tough to get in Paris these days.

Ok.My beloved and i got this hotel room at an absolute bargain basement internet price so i'll be kind but if we'd actually paid the full tariff i think we'd be pretty damn miffed.Romantic boudoir en Paris....non.Rather shabby and triste...oui.Don't get me wrong, the linen and the bathroom while fairly tired were spankingly clean however the carpet probably had more life than the Pigalle and was as black a painting by Soulanges. The room was also achingly gloomy, however unlike other reviewers we didn't find the noise levels to be a problem nor can we complain about the staff who whilst not exactly inspirational managed to be courteous, correct and charmingly condecending.I'm sure that the advertised pictures do relate to actual rooms however probably not the rooms that you'll be allocated unless you're paying top dollar. We didn't have (the expensive) breakfast at the hotel, prefering to sample some of the local cafes which is where the hotel does shine...the location is fantastic, just a few steps from both the Seine and the Boulevard St Germain but this alas is not quite enough to redeem the Hotel L'Academie which we wouldn't recommened...there are far superior hotels in the surrounding area.
My husband and I stayed at the hotel in May 2004. We had traveled quite a bit and had stayed in numerous hotels. This was our worst hotel experience. The hotel is located in a central area with easy access to all the attractions. Restaurants in the neighborhood are rather pricy, but some of them are quite good. Breakfast in the hotel is even more expensive. However, there is a very nice supermarket nearby which has an excellent bakery. Other than the location, there are not a lot of things going for the hotel. The rooms are small, which I heard is to be expected in Paris. The décor is quite modest. The service was much worse than I expected. We reserved our room for three nights through a website. When we arrived late in the evening ready to go up to our rooms and fall sleep, we were told that our rooms were flooded. We were ready to forgive the unexpected flooding, but became suspicious when we were told that the rooms would be ready for us the following night. We just could not imagine that the carpets could get dry so fast. Our suspicions were later confirmed. We found out that our rooms were given to clients who wanted to extend their stay and were willing to pay the full rate instead of the Internet rate. The hotel staff was rather unapologetic about the whole situation. We had to wait that evening for the transfer to another hotel to be sorted out and for the new hotel to figure out how they could find us a queen bed we requested. In the morning we spent at least 2 hours waiting for the two hotels to figure out whether we could be transferred to the original hotel and how much to charge us. As we were used to higher standards of hospitality, we at one point demanded for the matter to be resolved quicker. We only had a couple of days in Paris and did not want to spend them figuring out sleeping arrangements. However, the receptionists proceeded at their own pace and threatened to call the police if we raised our voices. Neither of the hotels made any attempt to compensate us for the inconvenience they caused. In fact, even though the hotel rate we got through the Internet was inclusive of all taxes, the hotel charged us an extra tax.

Date of stay: December 2003. Room: 305After several years of visiting Paris, this is the first hotel that has moved me to write to the manager (with no reply) and to publicly shame it on a review site. The room was small, which is to be expected in such a central location, but although realistically it was too small to have an en suite shower room, they went ahead and put one in anyway. This was achieved by installing the smallest shower cubicle I have ever seen: it was uncomfortably small for my petite wife, and almost unusably small for me (6ft tall). Cracked tiles and hair strands of a variety of lengths and colours stuck to the walls and ceiling did nothing to improve our impression of the room. (We reported the lack of cleanliness to the front desk, but no action was taken during our stay).Sleeping was as difficult as washing since the thin door, thin walls and hard, laminate flooring transmitted every sound and footstep from our neighbours. The breakfast was of two star standard: coffee, cereal, watery fruit juice, one type of cheese and average croissants/bread. If you do decide to stay here, go to breakfast early as many items weren't refilled/restocked when empty. We gave up on breakfast at the hotel and chose to pay for it (again) at local cafes. For the first few nights we were promised an upgrade to a deluxe room and were told to pack our things in the morning so that they could be moved while we were out during the day. We performed this ritual a few times, only to have to unpack again in our original small, dirty room on each occasion. To sum up, don't risk spoiling a holiday by choosing this shoddy hotel with its unhelpful staff and impractically small rooms.
