Expert Tip.
The ninth floor café of the Institute du Monde Arabe (Museum of Arabic Civilization), situated 4 blocks from the hotel, offers unobstructed panoramic views of Paris.
We managed to get a corner room at the hotel which had a balcony and good size room for European hotel, our friends had a smaller room and they could just walk around the bed so we definitely got the better deal! Good value for money for Paris in a great location few minutes walk from Notre Dame, metro stop outside hotel and lots of bars & restaurants nearby. The staff at reception were very helpful and always keen to assist us, the only downfall was that they ordered us a taxi back to airport on the Sunday evening and the taxi driver told us with traffic he would bring us around airport for the same fee but it ended up costing up €85! Double the cost to go into Paris.....we questioned it and he told us he could charge us individually which would obviously increase cost and then started talking at us in French which he knew we would not understand. Overall I would recommend the hotel just bad experience at the end so just watch out with taxis.
We arrived at the hotel late in the evening and was welcomed by a polite receptionist. He was very willing to give us guidance about Paris and what the city had to offer. Our room was nice and clean, and we could see the Seine if we put our heads out the window. The hotel is situated only 3 minutes walk from Notre Dame and there are many restaurants and shops around the hotel. In about 5 minutes you will be in the center of the Latin Quater with lots of restaurants, bars and shops. We would also recommend you to take a stroll along Ile Saint-Louis (next to Notre Dame), a very charming place. We experienced to be woken up early each morning (4-5am), but this was just due to temporary work outside of the hotel. Conclusion: Good hotel nicely located in Paris.
Just returned from a lovely stay at Hotel Abbatial Saint Germain. The hotel is within a two block walk of Notre Dame and the Pantheon and just a few blocks more to several other sites. Many tasty and reasonably priced restaurants are also within a few steps of the hotel's front door. Everyone at the hotel was friendly and helpful with making suggestions for restaurants or providing directions. The room was clean, modern and had a nice-sized closet for storing clothes and luggage. Overall, loved the hotel, loved the service, loved the location and will be back again soon.
I read a lot of reviews about this Hotel and I was worried, What a load of rubbish. I stayed in the hotel and found it charming. I took my elderly mother and she loved it. She had a room on the first floor and they had a lift so that was great, We were on the second floor directly above. There is nothing bad to say about our rooms Yes they were on the small side but so are some in London. we had rooms 12 an 22. the night receptionist recommended a restuarant and the food was lovely, Cafe Latin. I would use this hotel again. The only downfall of our stay in Paris was the non stop rain.
We were a little worried because the rates were so reasonable and the location was so great. We spent 7 nights and loved it! As is typical in Paris, the elevator was very small, the room wouldn't be thought of as spacious, and the lack of a full shower enclosure took some getting used to. But the staff was unbelievably helpful and friendly, the room was clean and less crowded than we'd thought it might be, and the bathroom was fair large, modern, and clean. The location is great--only a couple of blocks from Notre Dame--with easy access to metro stations and plenty of restaurants and coffee shops nearby. We booked our room at http://www.france-hotel-guide.com/ and were very happy using their site.
This hotel is one block to the Seine river and Notre Dame cathedral. There are many other attractions, shops and restaurants near the hotel. We found it to be what we wanted, a small, clean French hotel with friendly staff in a great location. The staff was very helpful in assisting us plan our day trips and tours. There are permanent residents who live in this area and frequented the nearby restaurants and cafes. This offered a more genuine travel experience for us. All of the restuarant recommendations by the staff were excellent and authentic. Easy access to taxis, trains, metro and buses. My wife and I would definitely return to this hotel. Grand Prairie, Texas
Room 57 on the 6th floor, double French doors (soundproof the traffic with blackout drapes) opens to a small balcony over Blvd St.Germain, across from a medieval church, making the charming smallish room more open & bright. (versus interior rooms facing dark airshaft from a small window)Housekeeping service was superb everyday. Double bed ,no nightstand, single door closet & single door w/shelves (with lockbox) flank each side of the headboard. Writing desk, cube frig, chair & ottoman leave just enough room to walk . Decor in creams & browns are very nice with lovely carpeting. Updated bathroom,w/shower (stall only), door from bedroom is a single slider aka pocket door Small 12" TV sat on a wall arm shelf above the desk with a remote that had a dozen so channels in Fr,SP, IT and the BBC news. Note : AC is central and not turned on by hotel in April, so tho it was not terribly uncomfortable,(my personal preference is guest controlled AC) the open balcony helped to cool until bedtme when the street noise required closing. Thankfully, cool weather helped overall. A 2 "thin person"2 suitcase elevator with a lovely lobby and 2 room sitting area. (After a 9 hr transatlantic flight we arrived from the airport at the lobby by 11am, weary. Note that checkin is not before 2pm so be prepared to leave your bags and sit or wander Paris for a few hours! ) Superb location, walk to Notre Dame, the Seine, even the Marais with Metro stops very close. A word about the breakfast. Wow. I expected simple cafe and croissants. Way more greeted me. The intimate dining room is in their barrel ceiling basement reminiscent of a French castle with tiled floor & linens from Provence. Bright - inviting. A buffet of juices, cafe , tea or hot chocolat, various breads, "pain chocolat to die for", sweet pastries, baugettes and an assortment of French cheeses plus a silver warming chaffing dish of fresh scrambelled eggs. The service was very lovely with the staff showing real interest and kindness. The front desk staff were always attentive and most helpful but one person of note, Veronique, was very special and whose warm, welcoming smiles & "Bon journee" everyday could not help but ensure the start of a day to remember in Paris. Bravo!
This hotel is in a good location near Notre Dame. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The front desk associates all spoke english which was very helpful. We were in room 35 which faced St. Germain and a church. Becuase of this we heard a lot of street noise (honking, cars, people, etc). Also it's right across the street from a church which rings its bells every hour. Maybe other rooms are more quiet. I sleep like a rock so the noise was no problem for me. But for my boyfriend it was another story. Loved that we had 3 large window in the room that completely open to let fresh air in. I would not reccomend this hotel for elderly as the bathtub is difficult to get out of and very, very slippery. If you like oysters I would highly reccomend eating at Le Bar a Huitres on St. Germain. You'll know it by the man standing in the front who appears to be selling shell fish on the street. If you walk from the hotel it's on the right had side of the street.
If you're looking for a nice hotel in a great location, this is it. We were there during the first week of March; weather was cloudy and wet for most of the week, which is what we expected. Abbitial has the smallest elevator I've ever been in; we're not big people, and we had to take separate trips with our luggage. The rooms are tiny (as expected) but very clean. We were on the 5th floor facing St. Germain Blvd. The reception desk was very friendly and helpful. We didn't eat breakfast there as there are a few bakeries within a few minutes walking distance. There's a little grocery store a block over and across the street, so it was convenient to get juice, water and snacks. The Latin Quarter district is a 10 minute walk away with a huge variety of restaurants to select from; most with set menus (appetizer, mains and dessert) ranging from 15 to 25 Euros. The Metro is just a block away. We bought 10 tickets to save money...and we used them all.
My wife and I stayed at this hotel just this past February 15-18. The room was clean, reasonable size for a European hotel. The bathroom was also clean and usuable. Our room was on the 5th floor overlooking the street - the noise was not bad at all, but of course given the cool weather we slept with the windows closed. It was very close to major sites and about a 5 minute walk from Notre Dame. There were several nice cafes, restaurants and bakeries nearby, as well as wine and cheese shops. We did not get the breakfast at the hotel and instead took advantage of the nearby pastry stores. I highly reccomend this hotel, if you are looking for clean, convenient value.
My husband and I stayed here for a long weekend in mid February. We were delighted with this hotel. The staff was friendly and warm. It is perfectly located on Blvd St. Germain near Blvd Ste. Michele. Travel from CDG airport was easy, and the Maubert Metro stop was nearby. There are many cafes nearby and a wonderful market was less than a block away on Saturday morning. We had a view of Notre Dame from our 5th floor balcony. The room was a bit smaller than what you would expect in the US, but was perfectly fine for two people. Our room had a small rollling cot in it which was arranged as a chair for our use. It also would have worked well for a child as a third in the room. The room was very clean, bed linens were immaculate. The full bath was petite but also fine for two people and very clean. We did not try the optional breakfast, preferring to eat on the run. There is a very casual and reasonable cafe near the entrance to the Metro opposite the hotel which we enjoyed for two mornings. This was a lovely hotel, and we would definitely stay here again.
The Abbatial Saint Germain is a good hotel and a good value, particularly if you take advantage of their promotional rates. It is rated, correctly, as a three-star hotel, but it is near the top of the class. The highlights are the location, the cleanliness, and the staff. The hotel is walking distance to many famous sites and two hundred yards to the metro station. Airport transportation is simple. Take the RER B from CDG to St. Michel, and then switch trains and take the metro to Maubert Mutualite. I'm a novice and it was fairly easy. It will cost about 9 euros per person, each way. The hotel can arrange a shuttle to/from the airport for about 17 euros per person, each way. We took the train to the hotel and the shuttle to CDG. Both were fine, and luggage posed no problem. The housekeeping staff did a tremendous job keeping the room spotless and doing so unobtrusively. They were great. The front desk personnel, especially the woman who worked evenings and the overnight guy, were also great. Very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Now for the negative aspects. The rooms are small. Please spare me the "but you're in Paris, what did you expect" rationale. Small is small, regardless of country. We had a "Superior Double" room and it was approximately 9-feet x 11-feet, plus a small bathroom. The bed and armoire took up almost the entire room. Storage space is tight. The TV was a disappointing 13-inch (or very close) CRT. Approximately 14 channels -- two English (BBC and MSNBC), one German, one Spanish, and the rest French. The bathroom had a tub/shower combo and it did a bad job at both. The tub is small, but deeper than normal. In the shower, the water temperature constantly cycled, every 30 seconds or so, between very cold and very hot. Very annoying. And the water pressure was horrible. The shower had a half-panel glass separator between it and the toilet that was worthless. If you take a shower, the floor gets wet. Period. Why they didn't install a shower curtain or sliding door is beyond me. And as small as the shower/tub is, they've mounted the towel racks on the inside shower wall! Very odd. Every hotel has flaws, so don't get too discouraged by my critique. This is my second stay at the hotel and I like it. If they would fix some of these annoying faults, I would love it. If you get a price break from the rack rate, the hotel is a good value. p.s. Empty out the mini bar and use it as a fridge. There is a grocery store right across the street that sells, among other things, beer, wine and liquor. The Mexican restaurant and the Brasserie next door are mediocre. The restaurant Marie Verte, a side-street or two down, is excellent.
My husband and I took our parents to Paris for the first time and opted for this hotel. It is located quite near to Notre Dame and the lively area of St Michelle were all the best eating places are in Paris! Our parents are getting on a bit so we were particularly looking for a location near to the train station and a hotel with a lift. This hotel was a bit further from the train station than we would have liked but was manageable and was within walking distance of St Michelle and the Notre Dame Cathedral even for our elderly parents. The rooms were clean and had en-suites but were not overly spacious. There were a few little scuffs, scrapes and broken tiles about but nothing major that caused any real problem. We were paying for all members of our trip so we couldn't afford a top notch hotel and opted for a middle of the road one price wise and felt that we got good value for money at this hotel. The staff were friendly, spoke excellent English and the breakfast was very ample and all fresh. I would definately return to this hotel as I am not the type to get hung up on odd little bits of damage here and there. So long as everything works, the room is clean, the staff are polite and friendly and the food is edible we are usually happy and we were all very happy with this hotel.
It was our first trip to Paris and me and my husbad were lucky enough to descover this little hotel on St Germain Blv. Lucky because it has an excellent location and is very easy to reach it from CDG airport. This is a very important advantage because it takes just about 30 minutes to get to the hotel. Our stay was excellent and the staff contributed to this a lot. We had a very, very beautiful room - spaciuos enough ! - very, very clean and with very nice and friedly staff. Everything was excellent and we couldn't be more pleased. Breakfast is ok too, the French people have very good bread and croissants and with a good coffee it's quite enough to start the day. I've seen, in other reviews, complaints about the elevator beeing to narrow. It is, indeed, but quite enough for two people and a big luggage. Nothing to worry about. So, if you are looking for the best stay in Paris, pick Abbatial. It's really 5 minutes walk to the famous Parisian islands (if you have room no 52 you can actually see Notre Dome and The Pantheon through the window), river Sena, Louvre and Jardin du Luxembourg. Also, from here you can walk to Rue de Rivoli and futher to Champs Elysses. Also very near is Ile de la Cite and Ile Saint Louis and if you get there, don't miss Rue Saint Luis en l'Ile, were you can find many nice litlle bistros and shops with almost everything you want from food, to clothes and the famous Berthillon icecream.
My wife and I just got back from a week at the Hotel Abbatial Saint-Germain, celebrating our 25th anniversary in Paris. The location was ideal for us. We wanted to spend our days walking to museums, churches, restaurants, markets, and neighborhoods, and that we did. The hotel is located on the Left Bank just a block from the Seine and then just a block down to Notre Dame cathedral. It's just across the street from the beautiful old St. Nicolas Chardonnay church and a block of very nice stores: convenience, flowers, cheese, wine, fish, meat. The staff at the Abbatial is exceedingly friendly and helpful and those at the front desk are multilingual and do a very good job as concierge. They recommend a very nice restaurant just around the corner for dinner, La Maree Verte. We took their advice and ate there twice (the food is excellent and service is quite good). The room we stayed in was ample by European standards, not sprawling like most American rooms. It was kept clean with fresh towels every day. The bed was very comfortable, a queen size. And the bathroom was good, with only a smallish shower. All very adequate and pleasant. Breakfast each morning was buffet-style in a clean, bright room downstairs from the lobby. We chose from a nice variety of offerings including scrambled eggs, yogurt, demi-baguettes, croissants, cold cereals, soft cheese, juices, coffee, and tea.
I booked this hotel because of the reviews I read. Its all true, a great place to stay. My friend and I, 2 women traveling in Paris. The room was small, but we really only slept in the room. Bathroom was good for 2 women. We never ate breakfest at the hotel, plenty of good places to eat around area. We ate at the Mexican restaurant next to the hotel, It was great!!! Better then Texas mexican food. Staff was nice and helpful. We had window doors that looked out onto the street. Its was only noisey if you had the doors open. The location is wonderful, close to all. I would stay again.
I would like to sincerely thank the staff and management at Abbatial St Germain for making my 4 night stay in Paris a truly memorable holiday. Thank you HOTEL ABBATIAL! Merci! This small hotel is situated on a most charming street. Picture post card perfect. Within steps of Notre Dame, The Seine, The Pantheon, St. Severn. For Convenience.. ATM's, Metro, Taxi stand, bus stop, convenience store, flower market, pharmacy, shopping and many many restaurants are just steps away. The Hotel..... Rooms were clean and in good repair. Public areas were clean and in good repair. Tasteful decoration throughout. Bed was of good quality and comfortable. Interior room , noise was not an issue. Room was small but tasteful. Appliances worked fine. Bathroom was clean and pleasant.. Excellant hot water on demand. Shower and a deep bath tub. Linens were of good quality. My only regret is wash clothes were not available. Towels, hand towel, floor mats yes. wash cloths no. Please remember that the buildings of Paris are Hundreds of years old. Thats one of the reasons you visit , yes? Like all old buildings they have a personality too. If you want a holiday Inn stay home!!! The Staff....Allowed early check in! (check in is 2pm we arrived at 9...had a room by 10). Offered to move us to a room with a better view the following day at no charge. Provided good advice on any question. Confirmed, made and changed restaurant reservations as requested. Arranged Taxi and airport shuttle service. Provided accurate wake up calls on request. The staff were polite, cheerful and had a sincere desire to please. I like to drink hot tea each morning (in my room). The lady running the breakfast room went out of her way to help.....found and selected a Hot water carafe...made sure the carafe was very clean, provided hot water, teacup, plate and spoon. This was done quickly and with a smile! It was small things like this that kept adding up to a great hotel experience. I would not hesitate to stay at this hotel again.
Small like most european hotels but very clean. The staff at the hotel was very helpful and nice. Our flight arrived very early in the morning and they let us check in to our room before check in time so we can get a bit of a rest before we started our tour of paris.
myself and my boyfriend stayed at the hotel for 5 days, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, but the room was very small and very out of date, the bed was quite uncomfortable, the elevator is barely big enough to swing a cat in and there is no residents bar, overall i thought it was a bit pricey for what we got,its a beautiful city well worth a visit but i do think there is better acomodation at the same price!
From check-in to check-out we found this hotel to be comfortable and a great location for exploring Paris. For an unforgettable week, we enjoyed efficient, friendly service from the staff at this hotel. A really special "thank you" to Veronique for providing assistance in booking travel and entertainment during our stay. Our double superior room was ample for two persons with a comfortable bed and a view of towers of Notre Dame Cathedral from the balcony, all at a reasonable price for Paris. Location of Hotel Abbatial Saint-Germain was within comfortable walking distance to the Pantheon, Sorbonne, Notre Dame, Bastille and Place des Vosges, Jardin des Plantes, Luxembourg gardens and many other landmarks. Just down Boulevard Saint Germain we found Cafe La Flor, Les Deux Magots and Brasserie Lipp, places where writers such as Hemingway and intellectuals shared ideas, food and drinks over the years. Located just a long city block from the Seine made utilization of the Batobus (water taxi) very handy. The Batobus makes stops at Jardin des Plantes, Hotel de Ville, the Louvre, Champs Elysees, Eiffel Tower, Museum D"Orsay, St. Germain des Pres and Notre Dame, making the entire center of Paris readily available by boat. The Latin Quarter cabaret, Paridis Latin is only three or so blocks from the hotel. We enjoyed breakfast each morning in the cellar area, served by the lift (elevator). Good food and friendly service. All in all, our week in Paris was complimented by the comfort, location and superior service provided by the personnel of Hotel Abbatial Saint Germain.
Paris – Abbatail St. Germain, 46 Blvd. St. Germain, room 24. Although at about 190 euros per night this will not be for the strictly budget minded, this was a nice small hotel only 2 blocks from Notre Dame. Our second floor room (that’s the 3rd floor in the U.S.) faced Rue des Bernardins which was a relatively quiet street. The room had a safe. Like most places in Europe the room was small but adequate, with a clean modern bathroom. The staff were friendly and helpful. There were plenty of markets nearby on St. Germain, and restaurants and night life in the Cluny St. district. There were lots of interesting shops in the Latin Quarter near the hotel. There was a laundromat less than a block away. The hotel was in easy walking distance to the Louvre, Pantheon, and Bastille areas, and it was an easy hop on the Metro to other locales. There was a bike rental place just around the corner on the Quai de la Tournelle (facing the Seine). For the adventurous this was a fun way to tour the city. I’d like to thank Trip Advisor for having such a great website in helping us plan this trip to Europe (Sept/Oct 2007). Thanks to a bit of research on my own and to the reviews in the Trip Advisor website, we found 5 out of 5 good places to stay on our trip. My criteria for lodging selection were to find a quiet, clean, basic accommodation in a great location at a value price. An accommodation meeting all these criteria scored a 4.
My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Abbatial from Sept 1st thru Sept 6th of 07. Overall experience was very satisfactory. I will get the negatives out of the way first; ~The elevator is small and it was out of order for 2 out of the 5 nights we stayed there. Our room was on the first floor so this was not an issue for us but if you have a problem climbing stairs, you may want to call ahead and request a room on the first floor just incase. ~Mattress; if you like to or used to sleeping on a hard mattress, this should not be an issue for you. It was a little hard for our taste but we managed. On to the positives; ~Building; simply marvelous. You get to stay in an elegant yet reasonably upgraded building. Everything about the building says, PARIS! ~Staff: very friendly, good commend of English language and very knowledgeable of the city. I would like to extend a special thanks to Vanessa for all the help she provided as well as making us feel at home with her smile. ~Area; GREAT! It is lively, close to good restaurants and cafes. (well, you are really never too far from those in Paris) We found the area to be perfectly safe. I was out and about after midnight looking for a place to buy snacks and at no point I felt unsafe. (I have to mention that I live in San Francisco so this may not be the case for people from small towns.) ~Room; you get a typical big city size hotel room. For Americans, if you ever stayed in NYC or San Francisco hotels, you know what I am talking about. Main thing I look for in a hotel room is the cleanliness and Hotel Abbatial was top notch. We felt very comfortable using the facilities and the sheets and pillows looked like they were brand new. ~Transportation; Le Open tours stop 2 blocks away, metro is a block away, you can take the train to this station from either airport and save a ton of $$$. We didn’t take them but we saw bus service running in front of the hotel too. ~Price; was one of the best deals we found in Europe. Just as a reminder, check the hotels site for booking. I found their rates to be the lowest. ~Summary; we would go back and stay at the Hotel Abbatial in a heart beat and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to friends and family. Hope you find this helpful…… David Gunar San Francisco, CA
My wife and I usually stay at the Agora Saint Germain up the hill from this hotel. As that one was booked we stayed at this property, owned by the same people. We found it to be clean, surprisingly quiet (considering it is on a somewhat main thoroughfare in Paris) and a good value for the money. We had a small balcony that overlooked a side street giving a picturesque view. The front desk was very attentive to our needs and they helped us book a day trip to Versailles and transportation to the airport. If you want to stay in a lovely and vibrant part of the city with shops and restaurants, and convenient to the Metro, this would be a great choice.
My husband and I planned a last minute trip to Paris last month. We chose the Abbatial Hotel based on trip advisor reviews. We have stayed in Paris a few times and by far this hotel is the best value. The hotel is in a great location, very close to the latin quarter. It is clean and the staff is friendly. We expected the small space. This is typical of most European hotel rooms. Who spends a lot of time in their hotel room while on vacation though. We couldn't have had a better stay for the money.
My husband and I had discovered this hotel a few years ago when we visited Paris on a Northwest Airlines vacation package. We booked two rooms this summer, as our adult children were meeting us in Paris. Both rooms were comfortable, very clean, with comfortable beds, and the baths were clean with new fixtures. Excellent showers! The location in the 5th (five minute walk from Notre Dame) is great , and all members of the hotel staff are welcoming and very helpful. The only disappointment was they now charge 12 Euros per person for breakfast, which seemed steep.
Stayed at the Hotel Abbatial St-Germain on the 17th of August with my spouse. We had some challenges locating the hotel and finding a place to park, but I blame this on being only my second trip to Paris. Overall, the hotel was very reasonably priced. The room was simple and was not overly large, but it suited our needs (hubby was flying out of Charles de Gaulle this morning). Our room faced the street and with the windows open at night, it was a little noisy - but no complaints. The hotel is located in the Latin District and is a very short walk to the Notre Dame Cathedral and an easy walk to the Louvre. I must say the surrounding side streets are alive and full of excitement at night - what a place! Bars and restaurants are everywhere and this morning when we left they were setting up fruit and vegetable stalls a few steps away from the hotel. Bottom line is location is great, excitement is plentiful and the room was cheap in comparison with other areas of Paris. I'd stay there again.
We were suprised to find such a delightful hotel so close to everything and very economical. It was very clean - the rooms were not small - not large but not the dinky ones we expected. They were tastefully furnished even. The breakfast is great - but not worth the money what with the exchange rate....but the food was good. We went to a local cafe for breakfast and paid far less. The front desk staff were so helpful - we just were amazed. In particular Veronique was the absolute most helpful person we have ever encountered. Her English was inpecible - she was so nice and so helpful - there was nothing she would not answer or do for us. When we were going to the Moulon Rouge and I had to iron my husbands suit - she took me down and allowed me to use the hotel iron. She was very sweet and we appreciated her kindness. We will go back to Paris and we will stay there. We LOVED this hotel.
This hotel was a winner during my winter stay. Very near to many attractions such as Notre Dame, The Pantheon, many shops and great resturants. The rooms were clean and contained all amenities and were fair sized. The rich decor of the hotel and the friendly staff added to the success of the trip.
Just back from a weekend here with my husband- also stayed for a weekend last year. very reasonably priced but think I would not go back again for a 3rd time. Staff are all helpful - especially the man at reception (I dont know his name) never had breakfast as prefer to have it in a local cafe and people watch and also much cheaper. The room was minimal - asked for a double bed but got 2 singles. Air conditioning in the room was freezing so they turned it off after we asked. So close to Notre dame which is so beautiful. All in all enjoyed but would like to try somewhere new the next time.
We just came back from a lovely trip to Paris, and were extremely happy with the hotel Abbatial Saint Germain. Our room, though small, was clean and comfortable. The location is fantastic, although be aware that if you are in a room facing the Blvd St Germain it can be quite noisy, but we found running the A/C blocked out 90% of the noise. All in all, this was a super value and we would most definitely stay here again.
the hotel is very close to the quartier latin that is very nice, plenty of restaurant and full of people either at night and during all day. The small market near the hotel is very funny and takes place three times a week. At the back of the hotel, 5 min walk, you can reach NotreDame cathedral. The room are a little bit too small but they are clean and the people working at the reception are all very gentle!
We stayed at Abbatial Saint Germain for a long weekend in early April. We booked the night before arrival and then read some of the bad reviews on Trip Advisor and thought twice before deciding to brave it. The hotel is a 17 euro taxi fare from Eurostar terminal and very close to the Saint Michel Notre Dame station. The area is one of the quieter areas we have stayed at in Paris and a 3 minute walk to the Notre Dame Church. Fortunately our experience was first class. Marco was charming and most helpful. We were upgraded to a very nice room on the 5th floor, the bathroom was excellent. Complimentary bottled water delivered to room on day one. The main restaurant (La Tour d'Argent) was closed but expensive. Some other restaurants on the same aera offers dinner for 35 euros. Again we could not fault the service and friendliness of the staff. Buffet breakfast was excellent. We have stayed at several hotels in Paris, some more expensive. We thought Abbatial Saint Germain was the best. It is in a safe area, plenty of good restaurants and a shopping centre nearby. We are very surprised by the bad reviews, it was not our experience.
Stayed at the Hotel in April 2007. Traditional French Hotel, staff are very helpful and if required speak excellent English. Rooms are smallish but very clean and include bathroom amenities. Ideal location for sightseeing as you are only a 10 minute walk to Notre Dame and 5 minutes from the Metro.
Arrived to welcomed by name!! All staff were friendly and helpful. Room whilst small was always spotlessly clean. Our request to join single beds into one larger one was attended to immediately. Whilst smoking allowed in hotel, absolutely no evidence of smell of smoke anywhere. Hotel is central to everythiong and a 2 minute walk to the River Seine. Very good value for money. Highly recommended!
Great location. We were a block from the metro and used it all the time. We were able to walk to Notre Dame and even the Louvre. Our room had a small balcony that was great! There was plenty og storage in the room, although the room was a bit smaller by American standards. Shower did not have a tub and was a bit small. We we arrived late in the evening and we told that our room price included breakfast. The breakfast was great and we ate it everyday. However, upon check out we were charged extra for the breakfasts!
We were very pleased with the service and location of this hotel. Rooms were clean with modern convenience. Very charming decor. Breakfast was plentiful with pleasant staff. Our breakfast was included with our room, so we ate there most mornings. We were able to walk to Notre Dame, La Sorbonne, Luxenberg, and even the Louve one day. The Metro was 1 block away and very convenient - we used it every day. We had a corner room (a triple) with a great view of the neigborhood shops. The church bells added to the charm of this hotel. We would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Booked the Hotel via Eurostar who promised a non-smoking room, when we arrived we were put in smoking room were the previous occupant had clearly been smoking cigars. Upon complaining we were told that the hotel had no non-smoking rooms (although it in retrospect I wonder if they meant no unoccupied non-smoking rooms) and that we should sleep with the window open. Given the cold weather and trafic this was not exactly a perfect fix. The room was small but reasonably furnished however the sliding bathroom door did not shut properly although this was not a big problem as far as we were concerned, just a design flaw. The location is great so it was a shame to make any negative comments but this did negatively impact our stay.
Only one contact needed. Talk with Vanessa, she will make your stay the best ever. Directions, restaurant reservations, room issues, and anything else that you want help with. Access to Metro and bus using themulti-day Cavite Orange Pass was the way for us. Less expensive and easy to use.The major problem was the lousy value of the dollar in Europe!
We stayed at the Hotel Abbatial St. Germain for three nights. This was my fifth trip to Paris and second stay in the Latin Quarter. I was a little skeptical due to the reasonable rates but the reviews had been so promising and we were on a budget and the location seemed so good we decided to try it out. We could not have been happier!!!!! The rooms were great. We had a double and a twin and both were adequate, clean and well supplied. They had very comfortable beds and extra pillows a rare find in Europe. The Staff were very accomodating and friendly. We ate breakfast twice in the breakfast room, while I believe their price high the breakfast was very good. The other morning we ate next door and were happy with it also. We had no problem with noise from outside or other guest, the Hotel appears to have been upgraded and remodled recently. The location of this Hotel is great, very easy to get around and a great neighborhood. If you are traveling and wanting to avoid taxis and use the metro as we did it is even better. It's also a wonderful lively area for going out at night. I have also stayed at Hotel Europe St. Severin in the Latin Quarter that was also good but the prices are about 40 euros more. I would opt here vs there in the future. My other experinces have been over by George the V, Hotel de la Tremoille, Very nice, Very Very expensive and not that much better. If you are looking to get into the city and people the Latin Quarter is a much better place to do that. All and All this was a great find and we were very pleased, comfortable and welcomed.
A good base for a rugby weekend in Paris. In a good situation for restaurants and sight seeing. Rooms were clean, if a little small. Breakfast was 12 euros extra per person and average continental type. Reception staff were very helpful and were good communicators. I would stay here again.
Booked a superior room on special offer at the same price as a regular room. Good view from our corner site, clean, spacious room. Good size bathroom with bath tub with shower over same. Toiletries provided by the hotel if you wished to use. Fresh towels every day. Didn't take breakfast option at 12 euros each, we felt a bit pricey. Had own travel kettle for coffee. Walked across road and bought fresh breads, fruit and cheeses and enjoyed them sitting at one of the three balconies watching the world go by. Plasma TV if you wished, don't know about channels. Good location with 2 minutes from metro or a 5 minute walk to the latin quarter. Church bells not too much of a problem as we were up early to see as much of Paris as we could. Traffic noise a problem on the last night but so was hubbys snoring! Would recommend this hotel to anyone and would not hesitate to return
We have just got back from a three night stay at this hotel and would reccomend it for it's great location and surrounding area. It is only a five minute walk to the Notra Dame / Seine and also to a number of metro stops to get across to other parts of Paris. The rooms are small but what else can you expect from central paris? They are clean and met our needs during our stay -would certianly go back and stay there again! We didn't have the breakfast as we chose to eat at the local cafes / pattiserries. The area is superb once you find all the small back streets with qauint shops and great restaurants. We spent the first evening at the trendy Buddha bar restaurant - great for a more expensive atmospheric evening! Then the other nights were spent locally. I recommend Chez Clement just near St Michel great food and lovely interior decor!
WOW This was my third trip to PARIS.... what made it really special is that this was my first trip with my husband..... The hotel was really easy to find.... we took the Roissy Bus from the airport ... when we got off at the Opera Garnier we took the metro and changed one train and when we got off at Maubert Mutalite we walked 2 blocks and got to the hotel our room was room 42.... it was great spacious enough.... bathroom is newly redone... nice tub my husband loved the sink we had a clean room... i should say that because we stayed 9 days the cleanliness decreased towards the end of our stay but not a big deal.... The location is the best really the best.... you are in a great area with a lot to do and extremely safe we were walking around at midnight and it was TOTALLY safe... we ate on Rue St. Severin at a great restaurant FLAGRANT DELICE.... great service... great food... clean and great portions fresh ingredients and we felt at home.... If you would like to take my advice please listen this is the best hotel to stay at.... you are across the street from Notre Dame you can walk everywhere we walked over to Ile St Louis please eat the Berthillion ice cream.... it is 13 dollars per person but I have never eaten anything like that.... I love Paris and I am now saving money to buy myself a place but until then you will find me at the ABBATIAL By the way I have stayed at the K&K and hotel Jolli lotti which do not even compare to this location and the service provided....
Have just returned from taking my American husband to Paris for the first time. We loved the saint germain hotel. Its in a great location, 5 minutes from Notre dame. We could even see the towers from our room (53). We had 2 sets of doors opening onto a balcony where we could watch the world go by. The room was compact, but bigger than others in Paris. The bathroom was a good size too, and both spotless. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, not only during our stay but also pre-visit over email. I cant comment on breakfast as we decided each day to try places out in the city. I would really recommend it to anyone. Its not ultra-luxurious or full of trendy style features, but it very much made us feel at home and happy. Its in one of the pricier locations in Paris, so cafes etc not cheap, but there were loads of great food places 15 minutes walk into the heart of the busy Latin Quarter. If you like seafood you have to go to cafe heutris, ten minutes walk away. You will spot it on a corner with huge shelves of oysters on the front!! The staff were so welcoming, the fresh ice packed platter of mussel, oyster, whelk, crab etc was truly spectacular!! On the junction with the Blvd and the seine is the Museum de Arabe. An amazing metal cladded building. Dont pay to go up the Notre dame towers for the view...go up their lift to the roof terrace for free! My favourite place to eat is refuge de fondue on street of the 3 brothers just below the sacre cour. Packed onto long tables having beef fondue, drinking wine out of baby bottles and trying to speak both spanish and french with other diners made for fantastic laughs all round. It opens at 7 but get there early, by 9.30 there was a huge queue outside in the rain! enjoy!!
We stayed in this hotel for two nights in late January. Overall we had a pleasant stay and would recommend this for anyone who just wants somewhere to rest their heads at the end of a busy day sightseeing in Paris. We stayed in room 36, a double room at the front of the hotel which had nice views over Blvd St Germain. The room itself was small but clean. The bathroom was bigger than others I have seen in similar Paris hotels and looked as if it had been recently renovated. There was a small mini bar, safe, hairdryer and TV with a few channels to choose from. On the downside the room was quite warm and the air conditioning unit didn't appear to be working. The windows were full length French windows and opening them up to cool the room down wasn't really an option as it was very cold outside and the noise from the main road would have been too much. The other point to note is that there are a number of churches in the area and if you are a light sleeper you may well find yourself being woken up by various bells, especially on Sunday morning! We had breakfast in the hotel on the Sunday morning and there was a reasonable selection of bread, pastries, yoghurt, cheese and scrambled egg. Juices, coffee and tea were also available. Although breakfast was fine, at 12 euros per person we thought this was a little expensive and you could probably find better value at one of the cafes nearby. The location of the hotel is very good indeed. It's a short walk to Notre Dame, near to a number of useful Metro stations and there are lots of bars and restaurants nearby to choose from. We strolled to the Louvre in about 30 mins and walked back from The Bastille in a similar time. It's a great base for exploring Paris and I'd certainly stay in this area again. All the staff that we encountered were very friendly and all spoke good English (we actually found in most places in Paris that our attempts to speak French were usually met with responses in English, in fact on one place someone actually apologised to me for not knowing the word in English -not quite the surly attitude that I had been lead to expect!) The only other word of caution is that the hotel lift is tiny, if you have limited mobility or are on the larger side then this may be a problem if you had a room on a higher floor. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would recommend this to anyone wanting somewhere clean and comfortable to stay.
We were not happy with original hotel, walked around Latin Quarter, asked to see available rooms, were told by some reception staff there were vacancies but we could not inspect rooms(decided against those). Visited Abbatial where charming Marco took time, even though he was very busy, to show us rooms & offer us a great discount (we left other hotel 2nd January-so after New Year rush). We took rooms 32 (2 single beds for our kids) & 42 (double room for my wife & self. Both have modernised bathrooms with showers &- a feature we all appreciated, liquid soap dispensers in vanity & shower areas- a small feature but much appreciated.Room rate 130 euros per room-reduced from 195. This hotel is in a fantastic position between Pantheon & Notre Dame. Sorbonne is next to Pantheon & St. Germain Des Pres is about 10 minutes walk away- opposite this awe inspiring church are Cafe De FLores & Les Deux Magots-THE places to enjoy coffee, hot chocolate(the hot chocolate in all of Paris is the best I have had but coffee drinkers beware make sure you describe what you want accurately -I am not a coffee drinker but my wife is & she was disappointed in the coffee several times). My wife & I enjoyed walking around area every night & one particular evening took a repeat visit to Notre Dame & voila there was a Mass(probably was 6p.m. Mass) on. We are not very religious but even as I write this review my eyes are misting up.There were 2 priests, 1 lady singer, organ music & it was like being at an opera. The music & singing were absolutely beautiful. Definitely 1 of the highlights of our holiday.Being winter it was even more enjoyable as the cathedral was dimly lit. A must do is the on & off bus tour (the green one-4 different interconnecting routes ). We got a 2 day ticket & saw a lot of Paris this way. Of course the Louvre,Orsay museum, Picasso museum, Sacre Coeur, River Seine cruise, are all a must but there are also other parts of Paris that are attractions in themselves.Try the wonderful Marais area where you have people of all persuasions-the Jewish area is very interesting &, according to my kids, the best falafel in the world! The department stores in Paris are very expensive & the service &attitude could be improved. There Is a lovely city named Troyes ,about 1.5 hours train ride from Paris (Gare de l`Est). You see an area outside Paris, save on your shopping &visit a beautiful city which has a lot of history & half-timbered houses a la Stratford in U.K. The Abbatial has breakfast in the dome shaped basement where a delightful lady will cook you the most eggy scrambled eggs any of us have ever tried. Also available are the usual croissants, hot chocolate, coffee, juice, yoghurt, fruit-good value at 10 euros. In conclusion, a very well run, friendly, clean hotel I would highly recommend.
My bride & I found out about this hotel through TripAdvisor. The staff was always so helpful & gracious. The location is great - walking distance to Notre Dame. The room was clean. The few but minor drawbacks are: small room & close to a busy street. By American standards, the room was small but hey- get used to it, it's Europe for you.On average, everything will be more narrow & smaller- the hallways, elevators, sidewalks, rooms, chairs, etc. The hotel is on a street that's a little busy & occasionally noisy, but that's a small tradeoff for being close to the heart of the city.
This hotel is a well-kept secret. With a friendly and helpful staff, great location and clean rooms, I would recommend this hotel to anyone - in fact my family is going to visit Paris for the holidays next year and we are going to book a whole floor.
Being located near Notre Dame and near a Metro station made this hotel perfect for us. Rooms were adequate in size with comfortable beds. The hotel was very clean. Staff were helpful, some more knowledgable than others. A good value for the price.
Fantastic location - right on St. Germain, can walk everywhere, literally 2 blocks from Notre Dame. Fantastic cafe next door. We had breakfast/lunch there every single day. Highly recommend the cafe. Two fantastic boulangerie's a block away. Starbucks - if you must - 5 blocks away. The bad - hated this hotel with a passion. The lift NEVER worked, never. I thought some travelers would have a heart attack on the stairs. Tiny rooms, even the so-called larger rooms were incredibly small. Yes, there's AC but they only have one remote so you have to go to the front desk, get the remote, guess at the setting that will keep you comfortable and return the remote. Extra bedding - HA, good luck to you if you dare ask for an extra blanket. They really can't spare that. Or what - the elevator is out and you may need some help lugging your luggage up 5 flights of stairs.... yeah, well - good luck to you there, too. You're on your own, babe. There was no customer service. There was no service. It sucks. Yes, the price is right and the location is great but I'll splurge a few extra euro and find a nicer hotel.
I have stayed twice at the Hotel Abbatial Saint-Germain and have had a great stay both times. The staff couldn't be nicer, the breakfasts are quite good, the price is reasonable, and the rooms are small but clean and comfortable. The location is perfect, near Notre-Dame, the Jardin du Luxembourg, and the wonderful Ile de St. Louis. I have read complaints about noise at this hotel but have never had any problems. Perhaps it is only an issue in the summer when the windows open to the busy Blvd. St-Germain. Personally I like being in a hotel close to Paris city life. I will definitely stay at this hotel on my next visit to Paris.
For our first full week in Paris we selected the same hotel at which we stayed 6 years ago when we were just "passing through" Paris. The location is excellent, within walking distance of the Metro and Notre Dame. Since we wanted to spend our money on things other than a hotel room, we stayed in an economical small room with a double bed and bath with a shower/tub. It was charming and quite comfortable. I believe this hotel must have the tiniest elevator in the world but perhaps this is routine for little Parisian hotels. We didn't mind. Each morning in a cozy basement room they serve a 10 Euro all you can eat breakfast buffet featuring excellent scrambled eggs along with breads, cheeses, dry cereal, juices, coffee, hot chocolate, and tea. When we return to Paris we will certainly stay here again, perhaps in one of the larger rooms with more of a view. Regardless of the room, this is an excellent choice. The staff behind the desk as well as at breakfast were very helpful and kind.
We enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Abbbatial very much. It was our first time in Paris and the location of the hotel was perfect. We could walk to everything. Our room (corner) was a good size and the bathroom was larger than we expected from a Paris hotel. Also very modern and clean. The front desk went out of their way to help us especially when we had lost our rental car reservation and they let us use their computer and were also calling car rental companies for us. We would definitely stay there again.
This is our 2nd stay. It has only improved since our stay in 2002. To look out the window and see the Pantheon and then have a short walk to Notre Dame, that is Paris. The location is great and convenient to the Metro and various tour bus stops. The hotel service, from the front desk to the morning breakfast staff and houskeeping is a treat. Each service took the extra effort to communicate in English, meet our special needs and make us feel like we were special and appreciated. They often asked if we needed services outside the hotel and were ready and willing to help. The elevator is small but adequate. The rooms have expected amenities. It is a hotel I will return to whenever I return to Paris.
We spent 4 nights at this hotel and were so happy with the location and the service. Everyone we dealt with at the hotel was pleasant and went out of their way to help us. Our room was very clean, small but not stifling, and had a wonderful view. We had AC and a very clean, bright bathroom. I would absolutely stay here again, the location can't be beat and the service and value for the money was fantastic!
The Abbatial exceeded our expectations. I thought I'd be staying in the room the size of a cruise cabin, but it was larger. Very cutely decorated, bathrooms looked brand new and very clean. Our first two nights we were in #32 which was average size (but smaller than American chain hotels). The rest of our stay (six nights) we stayed in #66. Although the room was a bit smaller, there was more storage for clothing, a window/skylight in the bathroom, and a small balcony. (E 185/nt) The staff was wonderful! They spoke perfect English (thankfully b/c my French is terrible) and were so kind with suggestions for restaurants. We did have the breakfast buffet twice, it was quite filling with yogurts, eggs, cheeses, breads, cereals, coffee, juices, etc. (E10/person/day) Great sustenance for a our days walking around the Louvre! They do have an elevator (2 people only at a time), it did get serviced twice while we were there (we had to walk up to the sixth floor only once). We didn't use the a/c, but there was a unit in our room. We would definitely stay here again! I think rooms #66, 65, 64 would be my preference.
Travelers are welcomed with a sleek, freshly remodeled lobby on the same small scale as the rest of the 43-room establishment. It has a couple of chairs, a sofa, fresh flowers, the day's newspapers, Managing assistant Marco Paulo Da Rocha greeted our extended family of seven with a rich "bonjour," before switching unbidden to fluent English. Hotel Abbatial is Marco Paulo's baby, and at times it seems like a one-man show. He has some help: a couple of friendly desk clerks fill in during nights and weekends, while a bubbly young woman and a shy older lady run the breakfast cafe and keep rooms reasonably tidy. Abbatial the perfect place to stay. Edouardo MORAIS
Hotel Abbatial Saint-Germain, Paris France Date: Sept 23, 2006 Reviewer: Canadian traveller We spent a week in Paris this September and stayed at the Abbatial Saint-Germain Hotel in the Latin Quarter. The hotel was perfect for our needs: close to cafes & restaurants; walking distance to Notre Dame; close to the metro; very good breakfast; clean room with a wonderful bed and bath with shower; and very pleasant english speaking staff. We enjoyed our stay. I would say this is an excellent hotel value for the price and would recommend it to anyone wishing to stay in the Latin Quarter.
Great Location, a few blocks from all the action, and metro (a couple of blocks from Notre Dame) but still relatively quiet. The hotel is clean and our room was a nice size for a European Hotel.
I have stayed with my wife at the Abbatial many times over the last 7 years. There is no other hotel on earth that beats their service. I have stayed in 3 stars hotel all over the world but nothing beats the Abbatial service. The concierge Marco is excellent in getting tickets to exclusive engagements, anything really that "money" can buy. Even now that I have a place in Paris, I still look forward to spend "time" away from home at the Abbatial. Nothing beats time tea at the Abbatial. It feels like coming home every time I am there. Just returned from 4 nights in Paris. We picked this hotel because of its location and other reviews and we weren't disappointed. It's in a great location, close to metro and walking distance to Notre Dame and lots of cute shops and cafes. Rooms were small, but very clean and in good condition. We were on the 4th floor and had a beautiful view from our balcony of the church across the street. The front desk staff was very nice and helpful, as well. I would definitely stay here again on another trip to Paris.
There are so many other hotels in Paris, I probably would not stay at this one again. It was in a great location, which made getting to Notre Dame quite easy. It was on a street off of the tourist's path, thus creating a more authentic sense of Parisian life. Hotel staff during the day was courteous and helpful. The staff for the breakfast room was not as courteous, but just as helpful. The breakfast room (cellar) had an air-conditioner at one end of the room. The cool air did not circulate throughout the room. Our sleeping room was small and the bed cover was soiled. The pocket door to our bathroom did not fully close, which provided little privacy. A special note: hallways outside of rooms are not air-conditioned or lit. You have to hit a switch on the wall (in the dark) to turn on the hallway lights.
I was very concerned about this hotel after reading some of the reviews and spoke with my travel agent prior to our trip. She assured me that all was well. I should not have listened to her. First night, the ac on the fifth floor was barely functional. We asked to change rooms and even called our agent in the states, but of course, the hotel was fully booked, even though people checked in and out every day. The room was VERY small, even for Paris standards. 24 inches from bed side to wall, 42 inches from the foot of the bed to the wall. Where to put 2 suitcases? Where to sit except the bed? Did any one mention the shower doors that leaked water on the floor, creating a real safety issue. How about a hair dryer that is falling apart and could not be used. Of course, I too was foolish enough to request an iron and was directed to the basement laundry. I would chalk this up to a bad room, except that our children also experienced similar problems, although their room was not as small. Granted we were not in Paris to stay in the hotel, but it would have been nice to be able to come back and relax in the room. I would avoid this hotel, but it probably doesn't matter, as they are always full.
I stayed four nights at the Abbatial Saint Germain and found the experience delightful. The staff speak excellent English and were most helpful in all matters. The location is superb, with restaurants, bars, and bakeries all around. There was Moroccan, Italian, American, and French food within blocks. The subway station is only one block, and there is a drug store and Farmers Market within the square. I walked to Notre Dame and the Luxemburg Gardens. I was on the 4th floor and looked out on a very old cathedral, and could see the Pantheon in the distance.I enjoyed the convenience and abundance of the 9 Euro breakfast in the lovely wine cellar, though some thought it expensive and bland. They had eggs , breads, cheeses, cereals, and sweet rolls, with orange juice, good American style coffee, and bottled water. All was not perfect: The elevator was tiny with room for only two people and luggage. The rooms were small (but pretty and functional). Lighting was typically European dim.The bath was a learning experience due to the quarter panel glass shower "shield". My first shower soaked the floor, but I got it straight thereafter. The hotel was quaint, romantic, and perfectly situated . I would not recommend it for families with children.
I had booked this Hotel 6 Months in Advance, and requested a room on the 6th Floor, with a view of Notre Dame, as I read so many good reviews about the lovely views. At the time of booking, all rooms were available. When I arrived and checked in, I was told my room was on the First Floor. A huge dissapointment, as I spent a lot of time searching for a room with a view of the Notre Dame, and thought if I booked well ahead, surely I would get my request.I booked through the hotels own website, and they actually have a special request part in the booking form. Basically the receptionist did not care at all when I told her I really wanted a room on the 6th Floor. She just told me they were fully booked, and there was nothing she could do. So if any one wants to make a special request, be aware that you may not get it. The rooms was clean and tastefully decorated. Breakfast was very basic.
I am suprised to see the negative comments posted here. My wife and I stayed a week at the Abbatial St. Germaine in early May and absolutely loved it. It was perfect for what we wanted, and the location - near Notre Dame and the Pantheon - is great. The Metro is just a couple of minutes away. There is a great little market right down the street (on Tuesdays I think). The pizza next door is good. The staff was friendly and helpful and spoke relatively good English. I would not hesitate to stay here again. The neighborhood was quiet at night and seemed VERY safe to me. I recommend you take a right out of the hotel and get lost walking the little side streets of St. Germain for a few hours. We found excellent restaurants and interesting shops off the beaten path by doing that. If you want a reasonable price, and a great hotel and location for the money, stop looking.
Average two/three star Paris hotel, perhaps slightly above. Overall good value. Rented 2 rooms....one had air-conditioning problems (it was 90 degrees). Good location with excellent corner cafe right next door. There are a lot of bad cafes in the area so this was a plus. I would skip the typically over-priced hotel breakfast and eat here instead. Good bedding and excellent water pressure. Unfortunately, you can hear every flush of any toilet in the building. Polite staff, but wouldn't ask them for restaurant suggestions. Single-paned windows....can get noisy at night. I would stay again for the right price, but will probably seek a quieter hotel with a bit more comfort in the future.
My wife and I stayed at the Abbatial St. Germain for ten nights on the fourth floor (3rd floor in France) with a window overlooking the boulevard St. Germain, the Pantheon dome, and a cute little chapel. Our room was tidy, clean, and very small. The size of the room didn't bother us too much, because we weren't really in Paris to hang out in our room--we were there to see the city! Big downside was that the bathroom door was as described in other reviews: on a slider hung outside the doorway, offering little privacy. Not the worst thing in the world, but a real door would have been nice. Two french doors opened onto small balconies, overlooking Blvd. St. Germain. For those who might not know, the Blvd. is quite a busy street--not recommended for light sleepers. With the doors closed the noise wasn't too bad for us. Hotel staff was courteous, and spoke excellent English. They gave us our messages, and relayed our needs to housekeeping just as we asked. I'm not sure what some other reviewers were expecting from this hotel as far as services. The place is cute, well-kept, but is definitely bare-bonsey... I would reccommend this place for budget-travelers, young couples, and those who would like to stay close to the center of Paris. My wife and I would probably stay at the Abbatial again in the future.
In April was fortunate to stay at the BEST resort ever, Secrets Capri in Playa del Carmen Mexico. Wrote a glowing review on that resort. Then in May I came to this hotel. What a difference. The public areas are kept up nice and clean. It's mainly the service and amenities. They gave me and my son a double bed in a tiny room even though we had emailed them ahead of time, several times, in French and English requesting 2 beds explaining we were mother and son traveling. Well, we explain again that we were mother and son and needed 2 beds. They said it would be 30 euros per night extra and wouldn't budge. That's ridiculous! They show us the "bigger" room. It had 2 twin beds RIGHT next to each other. Further the safe didn't work, they couldn't fix it and they were like, oh well. I asked them were was an iron for me to iron my clothes. I was directed to the basement were a tiny, humid laundry room was to iron my clothes. Have never been to such poor facilities in quite some years. Despite this hotel, I had a lovely time in Paris. Thought the city of Paris was one of the loveliest cities I have ever seen, very clean, picturesque. The people were the most romantic and very nice.
My wife and I had a room on the first floor for three nights and then left for England and northern France. Upon returning to this hotel we upgraded to the 5th floor. Besides the bigger room size the bathroom door shut completely. What a nice touch huh? From the higher floors the place is a totally different hotel. Bathroom doors that don't close are just wrong. Just so everyone reading this understands, what I mean here is the bathroom doors are hanging outside the doorway on a track and they slide over the opening and leave large gaps on each side. Zero privacy even with your spouse of over 20 years is just weird. The service was as others have stated was indifferent to comatose depending on what time you got back at night to the hotel. No real problems with anything though. Tried their breakfeast once and never went back. The interenet is avaiable for a price on a prepaid sign up deal. That was good. The elevator is the smallest in the world. The location to many sights is excellent and to the Metro as well. Walking down to riverfront, which is only two blocks away was great. So, would we stay there again? Only on the two top floors and after reading how they jerk some people around I'm not sure I'd risk it.
We too chose this place from reviews on this site but knew going in we'd only be happy with a larger corner room (very large for Paris) and that's what we got and paid for. B'fast was nothing special and the fruit offered was only whole fruit. The thrid night (of six) that we were there my husband proclaimed while I was in the shower that we could see the Eiffel Tower from our room. Well since the hotel boasts about having views of Notre Dame I thought my husband was confused about this but by the time I got to the window the lights on the tower were all ablaze. So we did have a view from our room of the most famous landmark in all of Paris and you could see if from the room, where for the Notre Dame view you must exit to the tiny balcony. The next day I mentioned to the guy at the desk that we were surprised no one mentioned we had a veiw of the Eiffel Tower from our room and he looked at me like I was crazy and aksed what room I was in. Im sure only our room and the one above us had the view but and we could only see about a fifth of the of the tower (top). But still since most places in Paris that have an ET view they charge extra for (some views requiring you to crane your neck), why wouldn't this place even know that two of their rooms had it?.... Our safe didn't work so the staff offered to keep them downstairs so they'd be safe but when we got them back the day before we left we found they had been in an unlocked drawer the whole time! Obviously they would have been much safer in our locked room. Also, it seems as though most rooms (all non-corner rooms) had pocket doors for the bathroom and none of them actually closed so everyone complained but they of course could not be fixed. So unless you're staying on the 5th or 6th floor, on the corner I'd pass on this place and look for a place with a more customer service oriented staff and closing bathroom doors. I highly doubt their a/c units really work as someone actually wanted theirs turned on (it was not hot to us) and there was a problem with that request too. This place is living on it's location, not it's customer service reputation even though they aren't that rude overall, just not helpful. They certainly don't seem to care if you ever come back in my opinion which is not what I'm looking for in a place to stay.
My mom and I booked this five nights at this hotel after reading the positive reviews on this site. I'm not quite sure it lived up to the hype -- even for the unbeatable price, you'd think they could include some of the practical elements that were notably missing in the room -- an alarm clock (or any clock at all), a set of drawers so guests could unpack their clothes properly, an iron, more electrical outlets, and maybe even some information about checkout times and nearby internet cafes. Otherwise, the room was pleasant -- undeniably tiny, but nicely decorated and clean. I particularly liked the light switches next above the nightstands, the two balconies looking out onto the street, and the easy-to-use safe. We booked a double room with a shower but were confused on both accounts when we actually saw the room. In the States, a double room generally gets you two beds, but here, a double room means one double bed. And our bathroom, which was in very decent condition, had an actual bathtub instead of just a shower (not that we complained)! We never did eat in the cramped basement breakfast room, preferring instead to spend those ten euros on breakfast in one of the many wonderful nearby cafes with outdoor tables. Staff were mixed -- some were kind and very helpful, some less so, but none were downright unpleasant. I think the biggest draw of this place is the low price and its central location -- within walking distance of most major attractions. I would stay here again if the price was right, and if the hotel could just include those little touches that were lacking, I would definitely give it five stars.
After spending weeks researching accommodation in Paris and predominantly based on TA reviews I decided book this hotel. It was a special occasion and my husband and I were treating my mum and dad to a long weekend away. I'd tried my best to plan everything so that it would be just right. We booked the hotel 2 months in advance through Laterooms. Almost immediately after booking we received an email from the hotel stating that our credit card wasn't valid. After checking out the problem we realised that the booking agent had given them the wrong expiry date. I emailed the hotel on several occasions with the amended expiry date and asked them to confirm my booking. I was informed by email from 'Vanessa' that the 2 rooms were confirmed. 1 week before travelling I emailed again just to confirm and I was contacted again and told that the 2 rooms were confirmed. However, on arrival we were told that because it was a busy weekend in Paris that they had already let one of the rooms to someone else and that one of us would have to stay in an alternative hotel up the road (which doesn't have views of Notre Dame and wasn't in the location we specifically chose). There was absolutely no reasoning with her and she continued to say that 'normally' when they confirmed a booking then it is confirmed - but not this time. I had copies of the confirmation email that she had sent me a week earlier but she refused to listen - she then basically told us that if we weren't careful we would end up without any rooms at all as she knew that most of the hotels in the area were fully booked. We ultimatley left as we had no choice and ended up staying in a different hotel. I told her that I was appalled with the customer service and that I would ensure that I gave a full review on the internet (as this was where I made my decision in the first place). She shrugged and stated that they were a very popular hotel anyway and that bad reivews didn't affect their trade. I would just like to say - don't believe the hype! From what we saw of the hotel it is at best average - there are loads of nice low budget hotels in the Saint Germain area and I would be inclined to choose another in a hope that they may realise that when some people book something - that's generally what they want! I am disgusted and upset with the treatment we received and I'm also sorry for the other couple who also seemed to be being messed around (I saw them tramping off to the other hotel only to be turned away!) I'm sorry to my mum and dad too for being messed around - not great for pensioners. I hope that this review helps some people make a decision not to use this hotel and realise that you may not get what you expect.
Just returned from a stay at the Abbatial Saint Germain with my daughter and found it to be a great little hotel in a wonderful location. About a block from the Seine and Notre Dame and within walking distance from the Musee Cluny , Blvd Saint Michel, the Sorbonne, the Pantheon and if you are good walkers - le Marais. The staff was very helpful especially Virginie. They all spoke English better than my tired French. Never ate in the hotel. Too expensive! and too many good cafe's to eat in nearby. I second the vote for the nearby boulangerie.Try their pain au raisin. Also a great Italian restaurant right next door. Felt very safe in the evening walking with my daughter in the neighborhood. The room was a reasonable size for Paris, but we had upgraded to two single beds for an extra 20 E a nite.
Stay: 13-18 April 2006 My Wife and I booked through Lastminute(-), and were happy with the location, and the room. We went down for breakfast on the first morning and we a little disappointed with the lack of food on offer. I ended up having crossaints and grapefruit juice every day, as the dish of eggs was usually empty. The real trouble started when we checked out. The first question was o.k. No we hadn't had anything from the mini-bar. But the next question was puzzling, why were we being asked if we had breakfast. The booking confirmation given to us by Lastminute(-) was a little unclear about whether breakfast was included. We did what we thought was the intelligent thing, and asked when we checked in. The man at the desk checked, and said breakfast was definitely included. The lady at the desk was adamant that bookings through Lastminute(-) didn't include breakfast. She wouldn't accept that they may have made a mistake, and she wouldn't back down and threatened to call the police. In the end we paid the Euro20/day and left. We plan to complain and get the Euro100 charged back from our VISA card. The funny thing about it was that each day my Wife and I commented to each other that we would have gone out each morning for breakfast if it wasn't included.
We stayed at the Abbatial Saint Germain in early March for 2 nights. It is in agreat location- you get to Notre Dame in a snap and we walked to the Pantheon and the Louvre as well. And there is a metro stop nearby. Everyone at the hotel was very pleasant, and although the room was small it was cute and comfortable-and we even had a little balcony. It was perfect for us.
As a first time vacationer in Paris i was quite pleased with the hotel, staff and room. The double bed was comfortable and loved the floor length windows. Bathroom was modern, shiny and clean. We were on 4th floor and took the 80 stairs both up and down. Elevator holds 2 Americans (maybe 3 Parisians!!)and is quaint. Found the stairs faster and got in that bit of exercise we all need. Hotel was being renovated on 4th and 5th floors and workers were pleasant and quiet. Breakfast in basement (looked like a wine cellar) was good. 10 Euros. Did it for the experience but ate baguette the rest of the week. Delicious and not expensive!! I would return to Paris and also to the hotel.
My wife and I spent a few days here in mid-March, and overall we were quite happy with the hotel. The location cannot be beat (if you like the Left Bank/Latin Quarter)--close to the Metro and the RER stops, not to mention Notre Dame (two blocks away). Our room (11) was fine--comfortable bed (pillows a bit thin, but they put four on the bed), nice bathroom. The room was small, of course, but we didn't go to Paris to hang out in the room. The one complaint is that for three of the five mornings we were there, construction was going on below us. So for an hour or so every morning we woke to hammering and sawing. In summation, we would stay here again, and that's probably one of the best things one can say for a hotel. (By the way, if you go, there's a wonderful bakery a block away--good prices and great food [we bought croissants there every morning before setting off on our random strolls].)
My husband and I just returned from a week at the Abbatial Hotel that we had reserved through World Vacations with Northwest Airlines. I thought the reviews we had read before going were pretty much right on. The room we stayed in was very small, but it was attended to by the housekeeping staff every day. What makes this hotel special is the staff. The staff at the desk was very nice and helpful. Vanassa was particularly helpful to us. No one made us feel uncomfortable because we did not speak the language very well (although we tried!). We had breakfast at the hotel's buffet every day because it was included in our package. The breakfast was fine, but even there the woman who served it made it very comfortable for us as she was very sweet and kind. She always seemed geniunely happy to see us in the mornings. We have stayed at many hotels, and while this one is modest in appearance and physical attributes, it made up for it in the kind treatment by the staff and we would stay there again for that reason. The location is very good too. We came back late on several evenings and never felt uncomfortable walking through the area.
My girlfriend and I stayed here for two nights from the 1st of Feb. The greatest thing about this hotel was the location; only a 5-minute walk from Notre Dame and a 1-minute walk from streets full of restaurants. The worst thing about this hotel was the size of the room. We booked a superior room and it was so small I would hate to see what the standard room was like. It was clean though and the bathroom was a reasonable size, also very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The tiny lift didn’t really matter to us as there were only two of us with very little luggage. The area around the hotel felt very safe, we came home both nights quite late and felt perfectly secure walking the streets. Didn’t get breakfast in hotel as there are many cafes in the area that all served gorgeous coffee and croissants etc. One other point, when I emailed to enquire about availability they offered me a superior room for €180 per night. I waited a few days and got a superior room through their website's late offers for €90 per night!! I would stay here again but would make sure I got a bigger sized room.
My boyfriend and I just returned from a five night stay at this hotel. The staff was great, particularly Virgina who helped us get restaurant reservations. Our room on the 4th floor and the lift were small, but for this price in Paris, you're lucky to have an elevator at all. The bathroom and the room were very clean upon arrival and were cleaned each day of our stay with new towels provided everyday. The neighborhood was also wonderful;it was close to the Metro, and clearly a family neighborhood as we would often see mothers taking children to school during the week or going to the beautiful outdoor market on Saturday. Being in this area provided a very genuine Parisian experience.
My boyfriend and I just finished our stay in the Abbatial Saint Germain and could not have asked for a better place to stay in Paris. The Hotel is a small size with lots of charm. Rooms here are quaint and decorated in Parisian style with lovely balcony windows that keep out the noise of the busy street. The neighborhood was perfect, the metro was a block away, the Notre Dame cathedral was a short walk away, and great restaurants, bars, and cafes are all around the hotel. We spent a couple of nights at the Long Hop a bar one block down the St. Germain and the Italian restaurant next door had great Italian style pizza. The woman at the front desk spoke perfect English and helped us with understanding the metro since we found out many who work at the ticket booths do not speak English. I loved this hotel and yes the rooms are small but we did not need more room, the bed was comfortable, the shower was nice, it was a place I would recommend to all.
My companion and I stayed at the Hotel Abbatial St Germain from Dec 23-29. I loved it, it's in a great location 2 minutes from the metro. The rooms and bathrooms are decorated modernly, and they were always very clean. The staff was very nice and helpful. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
We stayed at the Abbatiel Saint Germain from the 18-20th November 2005. It's in a great location on the left bank on the Boulevard Saint Germain, and very near Notre Dame and the river Seine. The staff were great, the rooms are small but clean and the prices are good value. There are lost of bars and restaurants around, and a great small market nearby on Saturdays. The breakfast in the hotel is better value than the bars nearby! Would definitely recommend it.
Hotel Abbatial St. Germain Paris France I spent three nights at this hotel in mid October 2005. I was in room 28 (a single room). The room was extremely small, but clean. There was no air circulation, and the air conditioning had been turned off for the winter. I couldn't keep my window open, because it was right next to the fire escape. The breakfast was 12 euros per person which I thought was rather high considering that breakfast is included at most hotels. The staff was average, not overly helpful, but not downright rude. The location of the hotel is ideal, right on St. Germain, close to Notre Dame Cathedral. This is my second trip to Paris this year and if I go there again, I will not stay at this hotel. We have just returned from a 3 night stay at Abbatial Saint Germain. The hotel is in a fantastic area surrounded by cafes, restaurants, shops and is only a 5 minute walk from Seine and Notre-dame. The nearest metro station, Maubert Mutualitie, is only 2 minutes from hotel. Our room was comfortable and spotlessly clean. We had double french doors and a lovely view of the street (Saint Germain Boulevard). The staff were very friendly and helpful. Despite our room only being on 1st floor and Saint Germain Bvd being very busy 24hours per day we did not find it noisy and slept really well. I would recommend, as others have before me, to ask for a room on a higher floor for views of Pantheon or Notre dame. We had a lovely stay at this central hotel and would recommend it to others.
My boyfriend and I got back from a 3 night stay at the Abbatial St Germain last night. The hotel was in a fantastic location and was just 5 minutes walk to The Seine, Notre Dame and metro/ batobus stations. There were loads of restaurants in the local area and the hotel staff were very friendly. The hotel is located on a busy main street which is quite noisy, but as soon as you close the windows in your room you cannot hear a thing- fantastic! We didn't get breakfast at the hotel as it is alot cheaper to eat in the lovely cafes in the area (breakfast 12 euros in hotel). I would recommend asking for a room on the top floor as these have the best views, but we stayed on 3rd floor and were very happy with our room and had a view of the Panthenon. Would definately recommend this hotel!
Great European hotel! The bed - contrary to the usual European beds we have experienced - was not rock-hard and was in fact, comfortable. The bathroom was also very nice - lots of shelf space for personal belongings and a great shower. The room had two (!!) doors with Juliet balconeys that looked out over the back of a church. We woke up to church bells every morning, which was lovely. The traffic noise can get a little loud at times (especially at night), but the doors are double-paned, so it was easily shut-out. The breakfast was very good - but not included with the room and expensive (12E). This hotel has a small elevator, which we were relieved to see because we were on the 4th floor. The neighborhood is vibrant with restaurants, cafes, shops and wonderful Paris energy. We would definitely stay at this hotel again.
My husband and I stayed on the top floor/6th floor. Our window opened up with a view of the Cathedral and a great corner street in St. Germain. The bathroom is completely new and although the room is small by American standards, it was very clean. The front desk all spoke excellent English...which is a little disappointing because I've been trying to practice French as much as possible. One block from the Metro line and in walking distance to Notre Dame. If you are happy to walk among scenic streets...then walking to the Louvre along the river is an excellent choice. We will definately stay here again.....
Location superb, staff knowledgeable, with a warm sense of humor and incredibly helpful. Comfortable rooms larger than most and at an attractive rate on the left bank. We will return again and again. Great weekend market across the street and local shops for water and soda, etc. Metro a block away. Loved it! Period. Signed: Two worldly wise and somewhat older travelers from California.
This hotel was great. I stayed here with my two teenage twins. The staff was friendly, knowlegdeable, and kind. A great grocery store was right across the street. Can't beat the location. The breakfast was very nice. A theater with English speaking movies was right down the street. It's by the best bookstore in the world, Shakespear and Company (across from the Catheral). It's also by the Latin Quarter Cabaret. My sister went to Paris and from her description we didn't even go to the same city. Be very careful about your hotel choice in Paris. The Latin quarter provides an experience similar to a US college town. Lots of nice liberal minded young people and older educated types who are into the arts, history, and literature. Food was very reasonable in nearby restaurants. Everyone talks about Paris being so expensive. I did not find this to be true in the Latin quarter. On the other side of the river, food jumped way up in price and wasn't any better than in the Latin quarter. However, if you want meet an infamous rude French waitor, go to the right bank to eat. My kids summed it up best. "Our teachers lied to us. The United States isn't the best place to live...Paris is the best. It's actually safe walking on the streets in Paris late at night."
Ideally located. Quiet rooms, despite being on Boulevarde St-Germain. Wonderful, helpful staff. Nice AC in our room. Only drawback was that the breakfast room in the cellar is TOO hot during the summer to enjoy your breakfast. Highly recommend and will return on my next trip. Enjoy!
I am trying to figure out if I was at the same hotel as the rest of the reviewers listed here. My husband and I stayed here over the Memorial day weekend and we had four rooms in 3 nights! The best thing about the hotel was the staff who were very friendly but not very helpful. The problem was the air-condioning. In almost every room it did not work. I do admit though that it was very, very unseasonably hot that weekend. We selected this hotel because of the location and the fact that there was air-conditoning. I am an asthmatic and it was important that I have air-conditioning, each room except one with a 3/4 bed had warm air blowing from the ducts. And as for "views" I had 4 rooms and I did not see any "view" unless I went out unto the roof-- that's the balcony. One room was so small I had to put my duffel bag outside in order to move a bit in the room. All the bathrooms were nice and the rooms were spotless just hot! My next visit will definitely not be here! And I'll try to visit in April!
We spend there 4 nights. A nice hotel and clean. Very good communicated with the airport by train RER B. Only 3 minutes by foot to Notre Damme. Close to Saint Severin, Bucy,.. where you can have a coffe, have dinner and walk in the afternoon. The people in reception very nice.
Most of the other reviews say it all - this is a great Paris hotel in a superb location away from the 'tourist stay here areas'. We stayed for 5 nights in a 'Superior Double Room', 165e for three nights (special promotion) and 180e for the other nights. Considering the location and quality of our room this is wonderful value. We booked directly with the hotel via their web site - [-] Our room (#66 on the top floor) was reasonably spacious, well appointed with a nice bathroom (green glass top vanity) with a shower over the bath tub. The room air conditioning was excellent but it was very hot in the corridors and lift. We had a tiny balcony with view of the Parthenon dome and the Eiffel Tower. We had no noise problems. The maid service was friendly and efficient. The front desk staff were a delight, always friendly and welcoming. We had breakfast in the vaulted stone ceiling room and enjoyed it immensely. There was no hot water on one occasion (I seem to recall another reviewer may have mentioned this) but it was all sorted out in about one hour. There is a Laundromat very nearby (up street by church). Yes the best Metro route at St Michel is a little far when you have been walking all day but hey walk back along the Quay gaze across at Notre Dame and you are soon 'home'. There is an excellent 'grocery' shop over the road, a wonderful boulangerie to the West and we had a lovely meal at 'Maharaja' Indian restaurant also to the West. We always felt safe day and night in the neighborhood. We would definitely stay here again and recommend this hotel to you.
Very cute hotel. Rooms are small compared to what we're used to, but the location made up for it. Couldn't ask for a better location - near Notre Dame, The Pantheon, lots of restaurant options, and a metro stop.
Just got back and spent 4 days at this hotel. Great rooms, small but clean and very friendly staff. Close walking distance to Nortre Dame we were in room 64 great views. Front desk was very friendly and the breakfast downstairs was very good. We would definately return here again, highly recommended. Great location to Latin district, wonderful restaurants close by.
I spent seven nights in this hotel last September ('04) and had a terrific experience overall. The room was spotless and maid service was very good. (They worked well around my jetlagged schedule.) The bathroom was recently redone, and the air conditioning worked well. The desk staff was friendly and helpful, and fluent in English. They provided typical concierge services and great inside information. Laundry service was exceptional. The view of the Gothic church and Pantheon was extraordinary--what a sight each morning. Great cafes just moments away; Notre Dame is a two minute walk just around the corner. Continue north for two more minutes for Berthillon, the best ice cream in the world. Delicious boulangerie just west of hotel on St. Germain. The closest "hub" metro stop is St. Michel, a ten minute walk, which seemed a little far after a day of sightseeing. But the Maubert-Mutualite stop is about a minute away. The area around the hotel is quiet and safe at night. I would definitely return to this hotel and I recommend it highly.
This hotel has a fantastic location in the Latin Quarter. The staff at the front desk speak excellent English and were extremely helpful. Rooms are tiny, but clean and modern. We paid $130 a night from Expedia and would definitely stay here again.
We truly could not have been more pleased with this hotel. Anyone who says it's noisy must have ears like a bat because we didn't hear a sound the five nights we stayed. The room was spotless and the air conditioning worked perfectly (we were in room 31). The front desk staff spoke perfect English and were very polite. The location was great; many shops & cafes and only two blocks from the magnificent Notre Dame! The breakfast was very good. 12 Euros but you got eggs and yogurt along with the staples of a French breakfast. On the street, you'll pay at least 8 Euros just for coffee, toast & juice. If this is your first trip to Paris, as it was for us, we would HIGHLY recommend staying at this hotel.
