The hotel's location is good just a walk across the bridge into the city centre. Restaurant was closed. Breakfast was overpriced at 12 pp for mediocre buffet. The hotel is hardly 'modern' I would describe it as 'tired'.

Very overpriced for what you get (we paid almost 100€ per night for two adults and a child off season). I think they charge more for a room overlooking the river and while the view was nice, it wasn't worth it. I think we should have gone to the nearby Ibis. There we would have gotten a standard room that is more comfortable, cheaper, cleaner, and just a couple of blocks away. The room we had (416) smelled funny, looked grimmy, like maybe it used to be a smoking room? I couldn't put my finger on it, but it was definitely not nice. Breakfast is also overpriced, scrambled eggs looked and tasted horrible, the bacon was worse, the only thing that looked good was the traditional French breakfast at a price of 12€ per person. You can have the same breakfast at the nearby train station for 5€ per person. The beds are tiny (140cm is what they give you for a double), hard, and very uncomfortable. Everything looks tired in the room, the curtains, the bed spreads, the linens, the carpet, etc. There is not an inch of counter space in the bathroom, no drawers, nowhere to put anything down. No fan and no window either. They cram towels for three in a towel rack for one. And the linoleum makes you wish you had brought some plastic shoes. BUT, the water pressure was amazing. Staff was polite in a stand-offish kind of way. I have no idea if they speak English since we speak French as well. Parking wasn't too bad, you either feed the meter (maybe 6-7€ per day in two hour increments) or you can pay 10€/day at the nearby train station (check-in first, it's a special rate for the hotel). The hotel is in a good location, we didn't notice too much road noise and no train station noise at all, but overall I wouldn't go back if you offered me money. It's not a dump yet but give it another year or two and it'll be ripe.

Just returned from a weekend in bayonne. The hotel is very well located. Our room ,which was a bit on the small side had a lovely view of the river. I found the breakfast to be very good for a 3 star hotel. A good selection of cold meats, breads, pastries,fresh fruit and hot food. The reception staff and the management were very helpful and efficient. Overall, a very pleasant stay in a nice hotel in a great basque city.

A nice old style hotel in a very good location, next to the river and the main bridge resulting in a short walk to the historic 'city/town' centre. We had a very good spacious room (1 Double bed & 1 Single) with a spacious bathroom, and were facing out with excellent views over the river across to the old centre. The Cold buffet Breakfast was average. However, the staff seemed reluctant to add more than the absolute minimum water to the water heater for tea - cost saving measures or just lazyness on behalf of the staff ?. The hotel has no parking which could have been a bit of a problem but there was adequate parking along the river side approx 200m away. All in all very please with the hotel - better than what I was expecting given the usual state of many hotels in France

I traveled to the French Basque country on July 2005. I decided to stay at Hotel Loustau because in Bayonne because I preferred a city more than a tourist resort (Biarritz, St Jean Luz) and because when I visited the city some years ago this seemed the best hotel (beautiful neoclassic Paris-styled building, just meters to the river and with outstanding sights of the old city and the cathedral). Well, the location is great (on the St Sprit neighborhood, close to the train station and to a parking and just in walking distance through the main bridge to the city downtown). The building is still pretty beautiful on the outside but in the inside is old-fashioned, small and not excessively clean). The rooms (at least mine) are really small (even if you think that the French hotel rooms are small... this was smaller... there wasn't even space for a real cupboard) and the bathroom was awful (small, with only a shower, no bath kit, small towels, and very very old). More: if you take into account that our room hadn’t sights to the river and the cathedral –the real reason of having chosen this hotel- but to a filthy street, full of pigeons) and that somebody gave our room number on the breakfast room and tried to charge us two breakfast we hadn’t taken (my God: is so difficult to give the guests a card for the meals in order of not having these kind of problems?) Concluding: I think this hotel (as many things in the city) needs urgently to be renewed. With everything is probably the best centrally located hotel in the city (the others are a two -Côte Basque- and one star -Madrid-Paris- classic hotels and an Ibis Hotel … the new hotels (Mercure, Comfort) are far from the centre, close to the autoroute) and if you have the luck of receiving a new room with good sights to the river…. Loustau can be a good choice for a great weekend in the French Basque country.
