A 5-night stay in La Maison Blanche started my three week Tunisia stay on an excellent note. My room was spacious, although it was the same rococo suite pictured. However, I enjoyed the decor, as it greatly reminded me of a room where I had stayed in France. Although it was on the second floor and facing the street, I never really noticed any traffice noise. I also was never disturbed by noise from the onsite brasserie, a complaint I've read before. Maybe I was too jet lagged. The room's TV offers CNN in english, but other programs are primarily in french and arabic. Other amentities include a mini-bar, a spacious bath room, a table and chairs, and a writing desk. A couch, two chairs, and a coffee table completed the decor. The staff was extremely professional, always helpful, and although english was not widely understood, an english speaking staff member was always available when my french proved inadequate. Food service was excellent, particularly the buffet breakfast, which included the best fresh-squeezed orange juice I've had anywhere. I walked to the medina several times, about ten minutes from the hotel. The hotel's location is extremely convenient for exploring Tunis, although the banks proliferate the immediate vicinity. However, as the hotel did not cash travellers' checks, this too turned out to be a positive, as I was surrounded by ATMs within walking distance. Like the hotel, very few Tunis banks cash travellers' checks either. The only thing I missed at La Maison Blanche was a swimming pool.

The rooms are Huge and comfortable. The restaurant is open late; the food is great; the staff are helpful. I really enjoyed my stay at Maison Blanche and would recommend it highly.

This hotel doesn't have a gym, a business centre, an agreeable lobby or a useable restaurant, but what it does have is large clean rooms that are pleasant and functional especially for a longer stay. Mine had a coffee table/couch/TV area, a small dining table, and a writing desk. Also a four poster bed which -- unlike the rococo horror in the previous poster's photo -- was tasteful. Important to select a room at the rear of the hotel because it's on a noisy street. Service was pleasant but not always efficient -- they almost never answer the phone at the front desk. Housekeeping was very good. There are two restaurants -- a smoky, men-only 'brasserie' and a white-tablecloth 'gastronomic' restaurant. I didn't eat in either, but the room service food, which came from the brasserie, was good. The breakfast buffet included both Tunisian and American (i.e. eggs cooked to order) and was adequate. Although it's listed here as a "Best Western', that brand is nowhere in evidence at the hotel itself. The location is near a lot of banks and other office buildings. It's about a $2 taxi ride to the Medina. Taxis are cheap and plentiful in Tunis.

This hotel has all the charm of a decrepit New Orleans Cathouse. There is a restaurant which is a 2 hour ritual for a tough steak, or a bar blaring local music which is the local meat market for local lads with designer stubble, sunglasses, and leather jackets posing as ersatz americans. Preparing a sandwich is a major intellectual exercise for the bar staff and ketchup is an unknown. Forget about bacon and eggs. After a week you will be cruising the streets in search of a meal, and there aren't many nearby. I finally loaded up on yogurt and bottled water in an effort to avoid acid indigestion. The beds are clean and toilets all in marble (slippery) but the overall impression is tacky. Negotiate your price in advance and get the quote in writing as the accountant may reserve an unpleasant surprise on the bill for you. Check out the bed photo. A real floosy's dream.

We were disappointed with this hotel. It is not what we would call a five star hotel by any stretch of the imagination. We were expecting in room safe (broken) hairdryer (broken) slippers & robes (did not exist). The bathroom was grubby with loose fittings.The walls were so thin we could hear everything from the room nextdoor (sounded like they were enjoying themselves anyway!) However, the rooms are very large with comfy bed & sofa etc & the breakfast is good. There is also a problem with very loud music at the weekend. This went on until 4am for 2 of our 3 night stay. Staff did not know where it was coming from (even though it was obviously very close). They even suggested it was the hotel bar, but that is not the case as we could hear a DJ which they did not have in the bar. Great trip to Tunis spoilt by sub-standard hotel.
